  1. Above board means not shady, looking for the birds best interest not a quick financial return. I wish you could work it out some way to remain together some way of making a little more time for her & less for housework? That is how I do it, house is not like a house beautiful but my birds are happy.
  2. If you still have not found an ideal home for him/her after a reasonable amount of time let me know I have a few above board contacts for placement in your general area of the country.
  3. Good photo, we do love seeing a grey having fun!
  4. He is a handsome little grey guy. Good job taking him in and you will find a great deal of helpful information about birds from difficult backgrounds that may be helpful. It will be fun to hear insights on living with a traumatized Grey from someone with your training. Lots of food ideas and foraging hints here as well. Welcome indeed.

  7. Dave I got that exact same bottle locally at one of our Indian grocery stores for 7.99. Love shopping in those Chinese, Viet Namese and Indian shops for dried unsweetened coconut products, dried lentils rice & beans as well as many fun things for snacking or trying.
  8. Unless you have weight lifter Grey like Smokey Joe who delights in lifting and dumping his heavy rabbit style crock that even I have a hard time wedging into the food dish spot. There is always placing the food dish on the floor of the cage but not under a perch or other spot where the droppings usually fall. They often ground feed in the wild so it would be a natural approach. You could even make a tub with sand or corncob pellets inside to hide some of his food making him forage for it and some foot type toys..
  9. Nekton is a wonderful product I use when doing rescue work on injured or near death birds. Most of us here do not add any vitamin supplements to our Greys diets as they should be getting a balance of fresh foods especially those rich in beta carotene's the yellow, orange and red veggies and some fruits. So both lack of vitamins, and toxicity of too much of a vitamin, hypervitaminosis, or a mix of the two, is one of the leading cause of death for captive parrots. It may seem odd to be talking about the dangers of too many vitamins; after all, we are always being lectured on how hard it is to get our parrots what they need, can we really give them too much? The answer, though a bit complicated, is yes. "If you are feeding only fresh foods, you have no danger of hypervitaminosis. This is because fresh foods, real veggies, fruits, and grains, etc, often contain precursors to the actual nutrient, so the body simply assimilates from the food what it needs, and leaves the rest. Vitamin A, for instance, is not a natural food of parrots, rather, they consume beta carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, from their food. The problem arises when we start feeding synthetic vitamins. Synthetic vitamins are already in their final form, and so instead of the body being able to take what it needs and leave the rest, they have to use all that they are given. Vitamin A, using the same example, is one of the more common vitamin toxicities heard of; vitamin A is stored in the liver until it is needed, so too much of it can overpower the liver. Hypervitaminosis can show itself through all manner of symptoms including, but by no means limited to, plucking, poor feather growth/quality, excessive beak or nail growth, hyperactivity, aggression, listlissness, and an all manner of health issues including liver or kidney malfunction or failure, and unfortunately, death. Now, however, things get more complicated. No one really knows for sure how much is the perfect amount of these synthetic vitamins for our parrots is correct. Each species has very different needs from all the others, and potentially different ways of precoessing the vitamins. Combine with this the fact that each individual parrot varies in how they handle synthetic vitamins and you have quite a puzzle! Going back to the vitamin A for another example, and in regards to parrots that are being fed an almost completely (80% pellets or more) diet, I have heard of an almost equal dying from lack of vitamin A as those dying from Vitamin A toxicity. This shows how very much individual parrots vary in their use of the vitamins, for some seem to be unable to process synthetic vitamins, and simply remove them from the body as effectively as they remove a toxin, while others become overwhelmed by storing all of the vitamins. For these reasons, it is very often recommended now to feed a mostly fresh diet, with some pellets if you wish to include them or do not have enough time to make sure they are getting a fairly complete fresh diet, and time outside in the sunshine for vitamin D." This was a very well written piece I borrowed for elsewhere as it expressed the dangers better than I could.
  10. Every little step is a victory for him as well as you and you can enjoy that moment with him, very good!
  11. Well think of it this way, she choose your voice to speak with, that has to count as a positive. Greys can be very funny about who they like and that chosen one can be suddenly on the outs and another may be the golden human for a while. Just be patient and continue on I think you will win her over eventually. Be the one who gives her treats, spends quiet time and doesn't push her to interact, patience is the best tool.
  12. Both are safe and the darker colors have more nutrition to offer, Kale and broccoli Raab are both good choices as well.
  13. Who is home first? If you are there before hubby make it bath time just as he is due in, a wet cockatoo can be a distracted bird who has to groom those very wet feathers. Flock call time may just be the same timing as hubby's return, in that case I suggest either trying to substitute a more acceptable sound for the banshee scream or join in and sing loud and dance in front of his cage, family flock calls.
  14. Good job mrsray! Austin you are off to a great start by wanting to do the right thing and doing some research to find out more. You might follow /gilbert story it has been quite the journey for him and his humans. At our home we have 4 Greys and each one has it's own history, some good some bad and we love them all. Any of us are willing to help answer questions and share what we have learned to help you and Frazier (spelling?)move forward into a happy relationship. Look froward to hearing how his personality changes as he settles in and feels safe.
  15. Very beautifully stated, we are all on your side and hoping for the very best!
  16. I will forward your post to relatives in Memphis in case they have a friend with a grey.
  17. they can so read our body language, they pick up on who is afraid or intimidated and work those angles. I think when we are afraid they are drawn to the dark side, perhaps they don't know if we mean harm or fear harm?
  18. At first he is angry at being thwarted throws a little hissey fit as an M2 is so good at, then he has fun blowing off steam and works that basket all over the floor. I will have to ask if they have filmed that. I did find on of a U2 doing the laundry basket travel dogs look upset.
  19. Just think you will never ever be bored!
  20. You might want to let us know what kind of bird Bijou is.
  21. I have a friend who has a Mollucan that gets very wound up when on the floor and gets aggressive. Now I am not advocating this but it works for them, she places a big plastic open weave laundry basket over him when he is being difficult and he runs around the kitchen with the laundry basket over him. this looks very funny and he gets derailed from the aggressive behavior having fun & exercise moving that basket around with out biting anyone or eating the woodwork. He sleeps well that night as well.
  22. Clever people, I guess you could call that a soft sculpture.
  23. Wonderful news, love to hear about a happy bird.
  24. Do ask your Vet if they can make a payment plan, don't decide in advance what the outcome will be that can only be determined by an Avian specialist. There may be a surgery or medications that can lengthen his life or at least improve the quality of that life. See if you can get aqn estimate for the specialist visit either from your Vet or from the specialists office so you know what you have to plan for. The sooner the better to discover the management of his condition.
