  1. We are ready to give you that shoulder when needed and sing a "spoonful of sugar"when you face those new food selections.
  2. Jayd has given you some sound advice. Greys like to look around and then decide if this is safe, interesting and permanent it can take months or even years for them to feel at home. Although there are birds that will make me a liar and settle in quickly. Claire sounds like an interesting bird and I think you will learn a great deal from accepting her into your lives. give her space, time and gentle support with out asking for any thing back right now, let her lead any interaction. You will be slowly gaining her trust.
  3. I don't know how we get anything done sometimes with the flock being active so I respect that box of wine and raise you a bubble bath, with music.
  4. Congratulations on deciding to bring Oscar home, I think you will be seeing a new bird emerge from that limited past. It will take time and patient observation to help him move forward but I know you can provide both. Gilberts story would be a good placed to study up on opening new horizons for Oscar. Excited waiting to hear of his arrival in your heart and home.
  5. Always check Craigs list every day, not just lost & found but the for sale section as well.
  6. Ekkie feathers are sometimes described as hair like feathers, the better to shed tropical downpours and sticky juicy fruit.
  7. That was relaxing to watch they look happy.
  8. Lets face it they have much more time to sit and think than we do so it is not a fair challenge for us, it may cause us to be smarter over time.
  9. Excited for you, just read through some of the threads on feeding and nutrition, behavior and training for a start. Then Patience for allowing your bird to feel at home before asking for interactions.

    Pipers wing

One of those times that patience is a difficult virtue, primaries take some real time to replace.
  11. Goldenfeast is a good safe product, just keep on offering veggies-steamed, fresh, chopped fine and mixed with his regular food, don't give up they have to get used to looking at it and it helps if you eat the same food in front of them. I have never tried this product and am at work right now so cannot ck on contents.
  12. Poor baby maybe she contacted something causing an allergic reaction? Do check with your Vet if this continues please.
  13. It only takes one brief moment for the smaller bird to sustain a life threatening injury or loose a foot or beak. Definitely never turn your back on them constant supervision. Right now there is a Senegal at my house waiting to be placed at the Sanctuary who has a split lower beak due to an injury given by an Amazon who was his buddy. There is also a Cockatiel at who lost toes when climbing on a Greys cage at his first home. Better safe than sorry.
  14. Wow close call but you kept your wits about you and made a saving move, good work and so sorry it even happened. Deep breath and a bubble bath for you with maybe a glass of wine or hot chamomile tea with honey.
  15. Do you have a bird or are you considering adding one to your family?
  16. Is there a toy the wing feather contact or become tangled in when she is playing hard?
  17. When he starts getting ramped up has a soft toy around big enough to cover your hand and give him that to bite rather than a hand. Or you can learn to predict his excitement levels and distract him like a two year old kid. Depends how fast you are with correction as to how he interprets his time out. You might be interested in joining the Yahoo clicker training group it will help you to work with all your problem children. Too's are a very excitable bird but they can be distracted or learn to form that behavior into another channel. Another option is to walk away when he gets going, they love attention so with holding attention can be effective.
  18. So sad but the joy of a new beginning will help you recover.
  19. Perhaps you could teach the rest of us a few words in Afrikaanse, it would be nice to at lest be able to understand a greeting.
  20. I read this quote from Kashmir Csaky who has worked with Parrots in depth. It does explain better than I am able about how reinforcing any behavior works both negative and positive. "Parrot behavioral tip for the day. What is a reinforcer? Most people think that a reinforcer is a reward or anything that the bird likes. Often time it is, but not always. Very frequently stimuli like yelling and other histrionics actually increase unwanted behaviors. A reinforcer increases the strength and duration of the behavior that it immediately follows. It increases the rate of future behavior in the same or similar circumstance. So, if a behavior continues it is being reinforced. Using treats is the easiest way to teach and reinforce behavior. However, it is not the only way and there are many reinforcers that are more effective than food. Experiment with other possible reinforcers, such as the tone of your voice, touch, movement, toys, the list goes on and on. I learned that work, attention, especially awe, is highly reinforcing when I took two of my birds to an elementary school. They were doing tricks for the children and their behavior was eager and fluent. Then one of the children asked me, Why are you giving them food? They're dropping it all to the floor. I looked down and saw a pile of treats that had accumulated on the floor. We do not decide what is reinforcing for our birds. They decide what is reinforcing for them and it is not the same thing in every circumstance."
