  1. So sad for your family loosing Twix has to be very painful. I know that sharing your life with him made his too short days the best.
  2. Lots of showers or spray mistings and lots of fresh veggies, fruits and sprouted seed & grain in his diet can only help. I live with a self mutilating Elanora Cockatoo (he came to us that way) a female CAG who does the nervous neck pluck (used to do chest & belly as well when we got her) we had & place a male TAG who had only head feathers but with lots of spray misting with both pure water and Georges Aloe vera juice regrew his feathers and got a new home. He does occasionally pull a few feathers when upset but is no longer naked. Do have that Vet visit first it can be something as treatable a bacteria or yeast on the skin.
  3. I would expect a grey to just take apart a happy hut fairly quickly. Welcome to our Grey world.
  4. I really enjoy reading your insights and enjoy following your thought processes as you and Gilbert progress through this journey. Your writings could be a guideline for patience and understanding a difficult personality whether bird , dog, cat, horse or human that has been through any psychological trauma. Great job of sharing how Gilbert keeps showing more trust and more personality as he feels safer and understands more of your household and your caring interactions. Keep up the wonderful progress reports!
  5. How funny about the sports language, we had a little naked rescue Timneh who came to us saying "Ta dah da da dah to dah-Charge!" his name is Gunner some how apropos. In appreciation for your Service time as we all are Welcome a board. I agree with Ana Greys story I think the best relationships occur when the bird gets some choice in selecting us not just us making such a lifetime decision.
  6. I do the same thing for my birds and the Sanctuary flock using lots of dark veggies-Kale, Turnip greens, Spinach, Sweet potato or Pumpkin or Squash, Peppers, Corn, Peas, Garbanzo beans, sprouted Grains, Dried whole grain unsweetened cereals (Red Mills 5 grain) Quinoa, Spelt, Tapioca flour, Arrowroot flour, Ground Flax seed, Shredded Coconut (unsweetened)Broccoli, Shredded Carrots, Organic Applesauce, Beets with tops, Pomegranate (in season) about a dozen eggs, Coconut juice, Papaya, Mango, Peaches, Blueberries, Ginger, some pelleted Parrot food, Cornmeal, Dried Safflowers, sometimes dried Rose Petals or Hibiscus flowers, Walnuts & Almonds & when I can afford it Pinenuts. I just soak the dried ingredients like the grains & pellets in the Coconut juice for 10 minutes or so then start adding the chopped veggies, the some Cornbread mix or Cornmeal & baking powder stir then add the chopped fruits pour onto parchment paper lined cookie sheets and bake. They all love it so you can get those veggies into them with some creativity. This takes me all afternoon as my oven is small & I am cooking for over 200 birds. It is an eat out night for us. I try to work in what ever is seasonal so the pricing is better and it is a good way to use reduced price veggies & fruits as I wash them well and they are either run through the blender or chopped pretty small as this is offered to everything from Finches to Green Wing Macaws.
  7. You can purchase the dried form of the herb at the grocery store usually in the produce department. It can often be found in the Spanish spice & herb section as Manzanilla.
  8. Welcome good to meet you and the fuzzy scaley feathered gang
  9. There may be only about 700 St. Vincents parrot left in the wild, Amazon species.
  10. LOL like making lemonade out of the lemons life sends you. I think they can appreciate a break from routine as well as we do. He may have watery droppings today so don't be too worried about that if you see it.
  11. Impressed that is not an easy journey! Good on you.
  12. If your Vet wants more calcium in her diet add more dark leafy greens.
  13. Your honesty with both yourself and us will take you a long way with Gilbert. they know the truth and trying to fool them by acting one way and feeling another way will not work. They are funny how a "dramatic" issuance of a word seems to make it an immediate learn for them, little stinkers.
  14. Yes very handsome and they do have a very different approach to life than our Greys. Do keep in mind that those big open Macaw nostrils do suck in the dusty Grey powder and it can cause helth issues down the road so I suggest either differnt rooms for them each or a good non ionizing air purifier like an Austin Air.
  15. Dark leafy greens-like Kale & Spinach, bright Orange, Red and Yellow veggies & fruits. Mashed Sweet potato is a good start you can add some cooked Quinoa and a little Ginger or Red Pepper to that for flavor. You can hang some wet Rainbow Kale leaves from the side or roof of cage for him to play with and he will taste it at the same time, perhaps even use the wet leaves to wash himself. Make the new foods fun-cut or shred into different sizes, hide in toys you get the idea.
  16. Smokey Joe makes pouring liquid sounds when I get to the coffee pot.
  17. MBS is a gradually pervasive "disorder" yes I am susceptible as you appear to be exhibiting the symptoms. (MBS multiple bird syndrome)
  18. Their language is not always our language but they sure can communicate.
  19. I have a friend whose Macaw got tired of reminding her it was bed time and flew over to work with the light switch. Our feathered family flock members do know what they are saying. Smokey Joe asked for a Dr. Pepper Sunday morning when hubby asked Nana what she would like to drink. No he did not get one.
  20. She could have rubbed it off playing or she could have a little ear infections. A normal moult should not result in bare patches. Suggest a Vet visit to eliminate an infection either yeast or bacterial.
  21. So happy all is well that could have been a serious issue.
  22. Beak banging is a natural behavior and can be one way of communicating this is mine. Sound like in your case it may also mean I need attention and something you have right now.
  23. Just allow to dry naturally.
  24. Twix appears to be a happy little soul, you are off to a good start!
  25. A little forgiveness when we recieve a correction due to a miscommunication that leaves us bleeding. Mostly love and appreciation for all they teach us and how they entertain us.
