You know you are a little bird obsessed when... :P
rbpittman replied to jessdecutie18's topic in The GREY Lounge
When your husband is away from home for 2 months and all you talk about to him on the phone is Dixie and Beau, her new words, how he's doing, and he has to ask about his 13 year old son and his camping trip this weekend (yes this really happened, today to be exact!). -
I love Emma's concentration on her bag and just letting Sachi be Sachi. Such a sweet temperment, you couldn't ask for a better or more loving grey than Emma! Thanks for sharing with us. I've got to get an atom for Dixie!

What a lovely sight! Soon Ana Grey will be flying circles around that room. I'm so jealous...but Dixie now has 4 flight feathers....one day!

Today Beau has spent more of his day actually moving around - instead of spending most of it on the playstand, he climbed down his ladder and has followed me around. I've thought about Harvey and Jill's toes as Beau discovered mine! We've also been discovering foraging. I've placed small amounts of Beau's favorite bird granola in various places and he's found 3 of the 4. Tomorrow should bring even more adventures!

Well, where should I start, first off - the grey's of course have never damaged anything, same for the conure, but the U2 - that's a different story. I need new crown molding in two rooms because of him thanks to LP falling asleep while he was out. My remote for the tv cannot control the volume any longer (same reason as above) and LP has had to replace a Wii remote thanks to Sterling. I guess that's when LP decided that he needed to watch Sterling a little closer...lol.

I'll drink to that Jill! It's exactly 12:38 pm eastern standard time so T..T. on all TOOTERS!

Great idea of putting the cement perch near the food/water bowls. Dixie's nails are very sharp, although they don't appear very long. Beau's nails were done at the vet's office, and much to my surprise they used a dremel to file them down. Unfortunately, it appears that they are also very blunt which causes him to not be able to grip as well.

Dixie has one red foot - actually more magenta than red - but she loves pomegranites always uses her left foot to eat.

The biggest fear I've had with having two grey's is that Dixie would develop a bad habit from Beau (feather chewing). Well today I've learned that positive interaction and illustration can work wonders! Dixie is forever chatting away - in fact she never shuts up - but in all her waking hours she's in and out of her cage, eating and playing with her toys; going from cage to boing to swing and back; asking for kisses and scratches and being her independent little self. Beau just sits. He sits and eats his pellets - in or out of his cage. He doesn't play, he doesn't make a sound. He's just there. He does love to cuddle, which is the one thing Dixie really doesn't do much. Granted he's recovering from an illness and injury, and I knew he would use all his strength to work toward recovery. Today however it seems we have turned a corner. First - there is a beautiful new flight feather on Beau's right wing - and it's gorgeous and he's not touched it! He spent his playstand time today not just eating, but playing with toys and actually preening himself. He's made a few noises too! It's like a switch has been turned on and he's turned into the grey I thought I was going to bring home! Thanks to Dixie for setting such a wonderful example of how a grey is supposed to be. On that note, Dixie was extra cuddly today for some reason. Monkey see - monkey do!

Dixie has not only mastered the "lean" but she's discovered bribery to go with it! Today she was leaning to go to Beau's side of the room and when I didn't move in what she considered the appropriate amount of time (like immmediately) she prompted me with a kiss, then leaned and waited, and then again kissed me. That time she got carried to where she wanted to go. Bribery works wonders for greys!

I am so jealous! Beau was supposed to have been flighted and Dixie was clipped when I got her. Now I can't wait until the rest of those flights grow out so I too can have the joy of watching them fly! Great video and I love the music - very special meaning to me and now even more so!

So glad to hear that Pepper love the radio! It will bring her hours of listening entertainment! Brittany, thanks for starting this thread. It is something that needs to be talked about. There may be a younger grey owner that might do something intentional in regards to language (we do have some on this forum) and not realize the potential consequences of their actions. As far as the opinions, I agree with Penny, this forum is specifically open so we can voice our opinions. The open forum allows varying opinions and advice that may put something into perspective, identify a potential problem, solve a delima or calm the nerves of a new owner. Thanks for being such a great administrator/moderator.

This post has helped tremendously with Beau. Dixie was not accustomed to bathing when I got her and it has been an uphill battle - we are doing better, but not totally soaked. Beau on the other hand has been going in the shower with me daily and is very good at getting himself soaked. Thanks for the updates and for starting the thread in the first place.

it sounds to me like a "heavy sigh" - a contented sound that all is good in the world and everyone is relaxed!

Dee, I'm so glad that Juno has finally made it home and that you are both settling in wonderfully. I know you have been waiting for this day for a very long time, patiently and impatiently at times, but could you have asked for a better outcome? I think not. Your preparation and love for Juno is obvious as you are both quite happy! Congratulations again on Juno making it home and we want to see lots and lots of pictures!

We have highly chlorinated lake water here and I use "bottled" water for the birds due to the high chlorine content. Due to my life long kidney problems I've become very aware of the chemicals that are used in processing drinking water. My ex-husband works in water and waste systems and there isn't a community provided water source that doesn't include high chlorine contents and other chemicals for purification. Judy's well water, although hard, is a better source than most tap water is, even if it is higher in calcium. Then again, some wells also have a very high sulpher content and other heavy metals that have leached through the ground. To make your water better for your fids simply boil it for 5 minutes and bottle it yourself in a glass container. This removes the chlorine and most of the other chemicals as well as eliminates the need to purchase bottled water. This is how I "bottle" the water for my fids, myself, and my family.

You'll have to add salt-less pretzels to your shopping list from now own and some of the N/A beer just for Harvey!

lovethatgrey wrote: Well I've now bought two more of them - one same size (for Dixie) and one a little larger (for Sterling). It has worked great as an infirmary cage for Beau during his confinement and keeping him low as prescribed by the vet. I've got it set beside my bed for him at night and he's doing very well not chewing while in there. I wanted it for an everything thing "just in case" cage. Living on the coast in South Carolina evacuation is a major probabilty and they stack up nicely in my suburban. While carrying Beau to the vet in it is a bit cumbersome, it is working very nicely for us. As far as traveling - they will work great when we take off for the mountains in January, a romantic week for me and my hubby and the birds.

Dutch, I'm a student as well and I plan on going back to work one day - hopefully a long way off - but, it will mean that my grey's will be in their cages more often than they currently are. I try to establish a set time for them to be out - like definitely in the evening when I would normally be home after getting off work (if I worked). I make sure they are out for at least an hour in the morning before I head out to do chores and running around, etc. This gives them the idea of routine if it's not set and they know that in cage time is as important as out of cage time. All of my fids cages are huge so they have plenty of room and plenty of perches and playstands throughout the house like you have as well. I do make sure they are in their cages at 3:00 in the afternoon - something I call nap time - so when my son and husband come home from work everyone is out and enjoying all of the family.

That was an amazing video and I wish I had been in the middle of them just watching. To see them fly and just appear as ordinary birds until the "red" appears is breath taking. Thanks for posting Dan.

Well Chocolate has the Oy - let's add some Vey to that!
-
I didn't realize how much they could learn from each other. Blue has taught Beau to enjoy a shower, and Dixie (a little on the tougher side) is starting to tolerate hers. Now if they can just teach Beau to preen not chew off feathers...lol.
-
Koko didn't think it was funny - he thought it was hysterical. Here he had engineered his morning enjoyment by opening Mocha's cage and letting him get out, then watching as your wife went about getting Mocha back into his cage. The laughter you heard was probably the same as that of an evil scientist watching an experiment come to life...lol.

They don't make bottles of Poop Off big enough to handle that mess!

What a sweet loving introduction of you, Ten, Breeze and the pooches! Congrats on the new addition to the family and especially for taken the road less traveled in finding her. Sounds like a beautiful beginning to a wonderful, long happy life! Welcome to the family Dutch & Company.
