Thank you! I wasn't all too worried considering the tiny-ness of the chip, but wanted to bring it up anyway....better safe than sorry. Thanks Dave!

We introduced Chimay to his sleeping cage about 1 week ago, and he is doing so GREAT!!! At first he wasn't sure about it, and I'd have to cuddle him for a little bit to get him sleepy before going in for bedtime. As of last night, he is VERY used to it. Last night, he was up about 20 minutes past his bedtime. I went to the bedroom cage and started changing the water/pellets/paper. When I picked him up and told him to "say goodnight to daddy," turning him towards my boyf, he took off down the hallway, landed in front of the bedroom door and looked up at me as if to say "Well? What are you waiting for?? I'm late for BEDTIME!!!" Ha ha! Now THAT is one major difference between our Chimay and a toddler....he WANTS to go to bed ON TIME!! I know better now. Lol!

The incident freaked me out in particular because I was home alone at the time...I feel so much safer when my boyfriend is home (yes I'm a wimp...ha ha) and when Chimay got spooked, the first thing I thought of (before thinking fire) was an intruder. Seems silly, but I feel just a little safer knowing that he senses things that I don't. Ha ha!

Oh Sameera I am so sorry for your loss...I know what it is like to lose an animal-family member and the others are right, the only thing that will help is time. You gave her such a wonderful home while she was here. You watched over her so well for her short life, and now she can watch over you. It's painful, but allow yourself time to grieve...you'll know when/if it is the right time to come back. God Bless your little angel

I really wish I could but the little booger won't stay still long enough to get a picture. Ha ha!! After I saw the request for a pic, I made about a dozen attempts...either he was blurry from moving around or he turned his head so the wrong side was showing. The best thing I can compare it to is if you were to nick the rim of a coffee cup. Very slight but noticable.

Thank you! The only noise he's mimicing right now are kisses so I'll be sure to send some back to you from him! Ha ha... My boyfriend and I joke now about having a poltergeist that's harassing our baby boy, but there were warning flags going up about SOMETHING in that little head of his. Fortunately the episode only lasted a total of 10 minutes, after our walk around the apartment. I felt like a parent trying to show their 5 year old that there are no monsters in the closet, none under the bed, none in the bathroom....lol. He's full of surprises!

I noticed this morning that Chimay has a little chip in his beak on the lower mandible, just a little to the left of where he would normally bite down to eat or climb. It's pretty small, I almost didn't notice it. Is this of any concern? He is still eating well, but it raised my eyebrow and I wanted to double check the opinions here. The chip is right along the edge, not on the smooth part.

Post edited by: chimaysmommy, at: 2009/04/22 22:05

OMG I have got some supply shopping to do!

Good luck Zahzu!!! Please keep us posted on her progress...big good luck hugs her and your way!

OMG Melissa that has got to be the SWEETEST succession of pictures ever!!! As was previously suggested you have just GOT to start a baby book for that little angel. It's so great that you get to visit him while he's so little and going through his baby-phases! Chimay came to us from out of state so we didn't get to interact with him while he was all tiny...Congratulations on such a BEAUTIFUL BABY BOY!!!

It was kinda freaky because there's always those "animal miracle" stories on Animal Planet and such where an animal senses something wrong (a fire, earthquake, choking toddler) and alerts the owner, and I was starting to think that he knew something I didn't. Ha ha! I started sniffing for smoke in case the apartment below us was on fire and stuff. But I'm not a paranoid <sarcasm>:silly:

Yesterday Chimay and I were having a nice quiet cuddle session, television turned off and not a sound around...his relaxed limp little body suddenly jerked up, feathers flat, neck extended, and he scampered up my shoulder to the couch cushion (couch is not against our wall, out in the open) and froze like a little birdie statue. I said his name a few times and tried to get him to step up but he would not budge or even blink. So I got up and went around to the back of the couch, sitting in front of him talking softly. He seemed to relax a bit after about 5 mins so I took him on my shoulder and walked around the apartment to show him everything was okay. Then he took off and glided down our hallway. So WEIRD for him! Anyone know what to do about a birdie-harassing-ghost? Lol! I have no idea what that little episode was all about. Not a sound could be heard by human ears at that point...

I agree with Christina...I used the www.nohr669.com site and followed their link to send our rep here in Ohio an email protesting this ban. Though many of us think that there is little to no chance that this will be passed, that is still more than ZERO. Please take a moment to give a voice to our animal friends who cannot speak for themselves.

That's so great!! I really can't wait till our Chimay starts talking....he is trying SO SO hard but can't quite get the words out. We try and respond to him like he's talking to us though. Chimay: "mmaargeitelpeuuhh" Us: "Are you sure? You have no proof..." Chimay: "keeyyrhhrallll" Us: "That was supposed to be OUR secret!"

Aaww!! I can see the pink in the feathers! How girlie of her Lol...

Welcome!! I unfortunately do not know any breeders in your area, however I would HIGHLY recommend the breeder we had gotten our Congo from. She is in Georgia, we're in Ohio and our baby was very very well socialized...we couldn't have asked for a better breeder. She kept us informed, always same-day responses to email queries, regular photo updates, and our Chimay has bonded with us very well. If you are interested in her information please let me know, otherwise good luck on your quest for the perfect breeder! And welcome again!

I don't have much in the way of creativity, but while having "table time" with Chimay (I have no idea why he loves it so much but he does...he just loves to scamper all over the coffee table) I took out one of the drink carriers from McDonalds, put some different kinds of treats in each container (couple of pine nuts here, an almond there). Then I put a wiffle ball in each one and let him have at it. He didn't know what to do at first, but then he started poking around and around the wiffle balls to get the little delights hidden around them. I know eventually he'll get smarter and just take the balls OUT but for now it's great fun! Just gotta hold the holder steady or it'll tip over on him

Post edited by: chimaysmommy, at: 2009/04/21 02:08

Respectfully, I have to say that I'm with Dave...Prior to getting our Chimay, I did quite a bit of internet surfing on the subject to get myself as oriented as possible with the care of greys, which included the YouTube clip that he is referring to (actually that was found during a browsing session to watch some of the incredibly cute and funny parrots that are out there). After watching it, I found myself very intrigued, and read up on Dr. P and Alex further. In short, please do your research. This is not coming solely from what I have read in this thread but in the forum as a whole. Quick conclusions can be dangerous, especially if that habit is also applied when making decisions on the best care for your greys. Karma to Dave!

OMG OMG!!! What a cutie pie! He is just too cute for his own good...and I'm LOVIN the rockin hairdo!! Ha ha!

I would like to second the recommendation of "Alex and Me"...Dr. Pepperburg fought (and is still fighting) very long and hard to gain respect and awareness for avian intelligence in the scientific community. As danmcq said she and her staff adored Alex, and it shows in this book. On a personal note, I sincerely believe that "Alex and Me" is a must-read for any African Grey owner. My baby hatched!-----UPDATED
chimaysmommy replied to orphan1965's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Welcome Orphan and congratulations!!! We got our baby from out of state as well and couldn't visit him beforehand, so I feel ya there. That's really great that he/she will be with people that you know and trust...such an anxious-making ordeal when you get a baby from someone you don't know. Can't wait to see lots of squishy baby pictures when you get them!!B) -
I really hope you can create that unique bond with your birdies...just keep in mind that just like human babies, they'll bond with you by means that has NOTHING to do with food! They bond by interaction. You wouldn't want a pet that will only interact with you because they know they'll get an almond out of it...it's so rewarding when they want to play, talk, and cuddle with you because they want YOU and the fun they have with you.

Ha ha ha!! I have to keep a sharp eye on my Blackberry...I have a hard, snap on cover for mine and it takes all of .5 seconds for Chimay to take it off with surgical precision. Surprisingly enough he's done it like 4 times with no damage done to the cover. Whew!B)
