  2. Hi all, I m pregnant! 4 months to be exact! (thank you thank you ) I m excited and nervous at the sametime. I don't know how Lilo is going to react to the newborn baby. I m just wondering if there is anyway I can prepare lilo for the newborn baby. I m also thinking about getting another bird. Since I m not working anymore I have plently of time to spend with the new bird. Also I was thinking it would be better for lilo since once the baby is born I will not have as much time for him for the first few months...AT least with the new bird, Lilo can hang out in the "bird room" with the new bird and not alone. I guess what I m asking is, what can I do to prepare lilo for the baby and is it a good idea to get another bird? any suggestion is welcome, thanks!
  3. My dream play gym for lilo is a Manzanita tree stand/play gym! kind of looks like this "http://spoiledbirdtoys.net/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=19_21&products_id=678". Hubby promised me one once we move to a bigger house(within a year or 2) Right now I have 2 table top playgym for him, one with a swing, one just a hook for hanging toys, also the cage top comes a play gym area which I made some "add ons". that is his favorit hang out place. (I will post some pictures of my "add ons" soon) By the way, below link is the Boing toy. http://www.thelaughingparrot.com/BOINGS.html I m sure you can research and find a cheaper one! Have fun!
  4. The boarding place I was considering, will only board birds with recent avian vet's health certificate. They also have an avian vet who is always on call. so I assume its ok. I have never done it before tho, so maybe the other members from the forum who had boarded their birds can tell you their experience.<br><br>Post edited by: LilosMom, at: 2009/01/25 17:05
  5. Its a great buy I think, Just becareful on the open top, I heard horror stories about them. I would probably just not use the open top. Have fun with your new cage!
  6. Hi, I just came back from a 10 days vacation (Hi guys I m back!!)and I left my grey with my mother to look after because works at home so I figured she would be the best candidate. Before I left, I typed up some instruction for her to follow and emphisized that whether to take him out of the cage is up to her, but "safety first"!! and surprisingly she was able to take him out everyday and did really good with him (except for his diet,.. just like a grandma she spoiled him and let him have whatever he likes the most, which usually means too much grapes and peanuts) but over all she did great! There are also a few boarding places i was considering, which I might leave him there next time when we go away. I know they probably will not let him out of the cage but he will have some bird friends to keep him busy. On that note, I agree with Linda, Its ok not to let him out of the cage since safety is most important. As long as hes got some company and plenty of attention, a week shouldnt be a problem.
  7. Thanks all!! Judy, I m leaving tommarrow and I m going to drop Lilo off to my mothers this afternoon(sniff sniff). I would love to stow you and Lilo away in my luggage...that would be awesome lol. By the way, when you guys have a chance, can you please go to the "bird food" section and take a look queston titled "Best Place to Buy Harrison's?" Thanks!
  8. YEa I just finished typing up one page of "Lilo daily food sheet" and a page of "Lilo daily care sheet" for my mom to follow. Now I really feel I can relax under the sun on my vacation! thanks ALL!!
  9. http://www.birdsafestore.com Has the cheapest I've seen so far. Just wondering which one do you guys get for your grey? Adult Coarse? High Potency Coarse? Adult Fine? Did any of you tried the Pepper coarse? How did your grey likes it? Thanks.<br><br>Post edited by: LilosMom, at: 2009/01/12 18:54
  10. I will be gone for 10 days (happy and sad at the sametime) I posted a question regarding leaving my bird while I m on my vacation titled "Going on a vacation without my bird:(". I got a lot of good answers and decided to leave my bird at my mothers place since she works at home.
  11. LoL. NOoo!! your grey is weird!! nah..Lilo is a wierd one alright.. I find myself asking him what he is doing at least 10 times everyday. Like just before, I took my "peripheral vision" off him for 1 second and he disappeared on me. I called him and he wouldn't show or even make any noise. I found him underneath the cage just staring at me. I had to ask him what he is doing again,..and I doubt he was playing hide and seek with me...Thats why I love to learn more about these fascinating creatures. He never cease to amazed me:)<br><br>Post edited by: LilosMom, at: 2009/01/11 22:13
  12. I choose not to clip Lilo's wings because I had a bad experience with him when he was younger. He dove down with his clipped wings and busted his keel open.:\ I had to take him to the vet right away and they had to stitch him up. He had to wear this cone and be on medication for almost a month. Needless to say the whole experience was horrifying and very stressful for me and the little guy. Right now that I M pregnant. I m contemplating the idea of clip this wings. My floors are carpeted now so if he does dive down with his clipped wings again, it will cushion the impact. I still havn't decide what I am going to do yet but I totally agree with Lisa that it is a personal choice. It depends on the situation and the needs, it has to be whatever is the best for you (your family) and your bird. Please update us on your decision and good luck with it!!
  13. Ok, guys I have decided to leave Lilo at my mothers house. She works at home so she will be home with lilo all the time, besides she took care of Lilo before so she has some experience. But next time I m going to check out the boarder for sure. I found a few places in NYc that actually sounded pretty decent. So I will def. try that next time and share the experience. Thanks for everyones replies!!
  14. This is another behavior Lilo does I do not understand. Whenever I go pick up his feather that fell off (especially the red ones)from the floor or where ever. Lilo would fly down and attack my hand untill I drop the feather. Or whenever I pick it up and show it to him, he would attack the feather aggresively and toss it away. Its funny and strange at the same time. Does your bird do the samething with his feather?
  15. Thanks for the info Tigerlily! I m a facebook user so I just checked and found more than 1 group for African greys but I m guessing you are talking about the "African Grey Parrot lovers" group. hope to see you there!
  16. Thanks !! I m in the process of uploading more picture will share them as soon as I m done! I tickle him while he is in that position. I actually think he is ticklish.. do you guys think that is possible? I also think he has different facial expressions. I swear I can see him smiling or giving me the evil eye. Hubby thought I was crazy untill him saw it himself one day.
  17. Hi, Thanks for all the replies, Casper, Yes Lilo is going to be alone at night by himself, Thats why he will have to be inside the cage for the whole 10 days. I m actually thinking of another option right now, which is to leave Lilo in a bird sitting place. I have called this place up (a breeder/bird shop place) and they have room right now for lilo. What do you guys think?..He will be in the cage at both places, below are my pros and cons to each place. At home - pros - he is going to be in a familar enviorment and bigger cage. cons - he will be alone by himself for at least 20 hours a day. At the sitter place - pros - he is going to have companies everyday for 10hrs or more. cons - he is going to be at a new enviorment and smaller cage, and he will have to stay there for one extra day since we will have to take him there a day before we leave for our trip.. Do you guys think he will be better off at home or the sitter place?
  18. Thanks for the site Twosteph! I need to make lots of those to keep Lilo busy while I m gone for my vacation.. Congrats on ur new bird by the way!!

  22. Hi everybody, Hubby and I are going on a cruise vaca for 10 days, and we got to leave our bird at home .. My inlaws are going to stop by everyday to feed him and check on him. I m just a little concern about his reaction to everything while we are gone for 10 days. And I am wondering is there any way I can make those 10 days less stressful for Lilo. I work at home so Lilo pretty much is a cage free bird, he doesn't even go inside the cage at night time, he usually sleeps on top of the cage or on his playstand. but for the 10 days while we are gone, he will have to stay inside the cage. We do try to put him inside the cage once awhile when we are out for dinner or something, hoping that he will get more used to being inside the cage. But I m stll worry if he will be able to handle 10 days in the cage. Anybody has similar experience? or any suggestions??
  23. My grey Lilo does the samething. He even follow hubby around when he leaves to go to anther room and stay there with him. But Lilo still wouldn't let him pet him, wouldn't step up to him and bites when hubby gets too close.
  24. I used to take Lilo back to the pet store (Parrots of the world) where I got him from, so he can play with other birds. untill Lilo got older and was picking on all the baby birds (he is 3 now) and the workers in the pet store started give me wierd looks lol. I wish I can take him to meet other birds and have play dates, so he can interact with other birds. I wish there are "birdy parks" instead of doggy parks... I m envious of you that you can have play dates for your birds!
