Well, the bird had a bump on its head. It was taken to the vet, where they said it was a bug bite. Two vets were working on the baby at the same time, they lanced it and removed some of the fluid. The baby was put on Baytril and a pain/anti-inflamatory, along with some cream and cleaning wash. The bump then got bigger, so the bird was taken back to the vet yesterday. The baby has surgery, and the vet removed three granulomas that weren't attached. The vet said they had no idea what had caused this. We are now testing the baby for aspergillosis. The baby is doing very well, though. Eating like a horse, and growing like weeds. Here are pictures from this morning's feeding session. They get so messy, ha.

Ha, I couldn't be happier. The wait is killing me! lol

Yes, moms the vet, but she's not an aviary vet, so I do double check every answer. I'm excited to go meet the aviary vet we chose, mom says she's really great and use to take her birds there. Thanks for the replies

Ah, that was suppose to say opinions. My mom can hand-feed. If she couldn't, we wouldn't be receiving the bird at such a young age. So what are you saying? The bird should be kept in the aquarium just to lean out to balance, but kept in a cage when he/she is not learning to walk?

I am 17, so i'm still at home. We have: 11 cats, mostly outside cats. 5 Dogs, one of them Captain America, is my dog. 2 rats, also mine. 1 Quaker, She is my moms 1 Baby African Grey, well in 3 weeks. Two of the cats are my sisters, she just moved and we're holding them for her while she gets things set up. EVERY animal is a rescue with the exception of two dogs, and the african grey.

You're welcome

Should I be putting my parrot in a bird cage when I first get him/her at 6 weeks old? My mom wanted me to keep him/her in an aquarium with bedding and a brck so he/she won't fall, and can also learn balance.:silly: The petstore told me this was VERY dangerous, because even if I clean the cage many times a day, the bird will get sick. Onions?

Thank you LilosMom, i'm very excited to first find the sex, and then take her home with me How long will you be going on vacation for?

"Vet thought it is an insect bite. They lanced it--had 2 vets working on the baby--, removed some of the fluid and put the baby on Baytril and a pain/anti-inflamatory. Plus have a wash to clean the lump and a cream to put on it. Dr. O said she has had good luck with this combo in reducing the lump caused by spider bites. The baby goes back on the 19th for a recheck." Thats what my breeder says:lol: I'm so relieved. I didn't get to talk to the vet personally, like I was suppose to after their appointment. I called around 5:30ish, and they said that she was still in the waiting room. She told me she didn't even leave until 7sih. Florida people, ever heard of Dr. Lightfoot? Thats who I am going to be taking the grey to in the future when we get him/her. My mom has already spoken to her and she seems to really really like her.

My baby has an aviary appointment tomorrow at 4:30. The vet will then be calling me to explain whats going on. My breeder had an appointment earlier, like yesterday, but the aviary vet had an emergancy:S She told me she did not want to wait over the weekend in fear it will get any bigger, that it has been getting bigger and not smaller over the past three days. Her other friends who are breeders and have been for years tell her its either an abscess or a bug bite, either will heal itself. My mom says the abscess will just either drain, or pop and drain. That sounds a bit painful for such a young bird, now at three weeks. I'm hoping its a bug bite:unsure: On a good note, the babies are eating like horses. Well, thats all for my update now, i'll have more tomorrow after I get off work and call the vet.

Haha no kidding! I have run out of sites to read about these amazing birds. Already know which cage I am getting, and have close to everything. I'm obviously not getting anything else done, so I might as well keep myself happy and keep my mind on this. I plan on making a perch next, some of the perches on here are amazing

You might be able to get the full 950.00 for your bird, its just going to take some time. More people are looking for younger birds around here, but even the petstore birds are 1200, without anything.

Thank you luvparrots. I'll make sure to post many many pictures, I have really enjoyed looking at everyone else's already. Caitb2007, haha none of my friends get it either. They are getting so annoyed with me because all I have been talking about for the last couple months is getting this bird! They won't say anything, because they know I just love animals, so its expected, but I can tell I am getting on their nerves. For a boy, I was thinking of Bruce. I have a list of boy names, but Bruce just looks right. Ha, we'll see. As girls go, my boyfriend likes the name "Caydence" but we'll see.

Thank you for the welcome, and i'll keep you updated. My breeder lives two hours away, so I won't probably see the bird until pick up, but she promises pictures C= Meanwhile, I spend like an hour at animal house playing with the birds there. I feel so bad for him, sitting in their cage all day long =/

http://www.cheepparrottoysntips.com/ I like some of the ideas, and they aren't to hard. Anyone else try any of these ideas? I am so excited for my little bird to arrive in 4 weeks, I am trying to find ways to keep myself busy. No better way then to make my own toys. ha

Time is dragging out forever. Hopefully i'll get an e-mail before I goto work.

Haha, maybe.

My mom is not an avian vet, all she knows "vet wise" about birds is nutrition and hand feeding. We have hand fed many upon many babies in the past. Seems like every spring my neighbors bring a new baby bird to us to hand feed. I will be posting many pictures as my bird gets older, hopefully

Hello, i'm Stephanie. New the this forum, and was told to introduce myself. I'm 17 years old, so i'm pretty young. Don't let my age make you think any different of me. I am a huge animal lover, going to school and working at a dog daycare. I have been researching all about African Greys for a a little over a year now. Its never been a good time to get one with money and time, so i've been very patient. The time has come, and after searching a couple weeks for a good breeder, I put a down payment on a beautiful baby congo, who is two weeks old. I will be getting him at 6 weeks old, so in four weeks. My mom was a vet for 26 years, and hand raised our quaker, so no need to wory about hand feeding. I'm not the one doing it, she will be. Here are some pictures of him/her. Waiting her her/him to be sexed. *Notice the small bump on the babies head who is laying down, refer to the nursery post.

Thanks, just looking to calm my nerves =/ I think he/she will be going to the avian vet today. The breeder said today or tomorrow. I'll meet you in the welcome room, ha.

So, I am receiving my baby congo in 4 weeks, at the age of 6 weeks. (Have hand-feeding experiance, no worries) The breeder will not sell me a sick bird (of course, nor would I buy one). I have already began to attach myself to this baby because I have waited SOOO long to finally get one. Well, the baby has a big bump on its head, right next to his eye. He is going to the vet either tomorrow or the next day, but I was looking for someone to calm my nerves. Could the bump just drain itself, or could it be something fatal, like a tumor of some sort? Has anyone ever seen this themselves? Is this a re-accuring thing?
