Do they understand things, or do they just mime? My cag Casper is a proper chatterbox, ne never shuts up And he always seems to say things at the right time. He shouts marc, and when marc answers he will tell him different things. Sometimes we can't understand him, but most of the time we can. When my dogs bark he will bark with them usually when somebody passes the window, but yesterday a lady parked her car in front of mf house and when she got out Casper started barking at her like the dogs would, but they were out on a walk at the time. Was it just coincidence that he barked when he did? Or does he understand that the dogs bark when they see people outside? There are lots of things he says at appropriate times and it makes me wonder. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

I nearly split my sides laughing after when they had calmed down. I would love to know what they were thinking. It did worry me at the time though, i hate it when they get stressed out it can't do them any good. I will try again soon, but i will pretend i am eating it yuk! That should do the trick. If they think it's anything i eat they will have. it

I have had one of the funniest times ever last night. well it was not funny at the time, but it is now. I read on the forum last night that they can have chicken bones. Well i did'nt know this and decided fo try them with one. Nelson is a trusting little soul, and trembles with excitement when he see's me. Casper is very laid back, but very loving. Well Nelson trembled when hr saw me, and Casper said hello doodles, (thats his name for me) Until they saw the chickrn bone, well all hell broke loose! They both turned into big grey, white and red puffballs! screaming and growling at me. So i soon moved the bones. I had just managed to unglue them both from the side of thier cage, when my son, Gary, walked in with a halloween mask on! and it started all over again! Poor little guy's! it will be a while before they see another chicen bone. lol

I was quite lucky with my 2. I got them both when they were 12 weeks old from a very good breeder, who taught me a lot before i got them.So i had an idea what to expect, and he kinda vetted me first, but i still had a few suprises in store. I have a sign on their cage which says "our names are Casper and Nelson, and we bite very hard. So please don't poke your fingers in as we don't always appreciate it" And you would be suprised at how many of my friends have been bit, even after they have read the sign and seen the scars on my hands. So yeah people who have never owned one before are unaware what hard work they can be, and could really do with educating when they start thinking about buying one. I think your idea is excellent, why don't you give it a go? It would be very interesting to see -

Yes i totally agree with you, and what a great idea it would be if the breeders gave parenting classes. I know it sounds silly, but it might make people think before they commit themselves. And save the poor bird a lot of heartbreak if it was given up. -
why do parrots (and especially Greys) speak?

It is very interesting. I have often wonderd about this myself -

l totally agree with you. Also i would find a landlord who would allow birds, if i had a serious allergy i would'nt have got 1 in the first place, And i would'nt let babies/children near them anyway. -
I had the same problem with Nelson when he was about 6 months old. He is quite big and sturdy for a cag and was very clumsy, when landing he tended to crash land. And he ended up snapping all of his tail feathers off eventually, but now they have nearly all grown back beautiful and straight. He is 14 months old now, so it does take a bit of time. So i would'nt worry about it to much. It seems to be a parrot thing

I no what you mean about the lean. Casper does it when he wants something and nearly rips my hand off with his claws,if i pass by what he wants.lol

Im not sure either, had lots of suggestions as you can see. Does your cag only do it in the evening like Casper?

Thankyou all for your help, i love this forum everybody is so great. I will try everything that has been suggested. In answer to a question. I have had casper since he was 12 weeks old, when i first got him i owned my own bar. He was kept in the living quarters, but where he was he could hear everything that went on downstairs. So when the guys had, had a few drinks the language got louder. I do try not to laugh, but sometimes it's so hard. He asked me for a parrot cookie the other day, and when i told him i had none he called me a b*tch. My friend Michael was with me and founf it quite hilarious, but Casper did't see him laughing, i think! He tells my son Marc he's a p***ck and then tells him ever so sweetly his cup of tea is ready. His language is terrible, but he is my little diamond. Thanks again everybody.

Please can anybody help me? I have brought this subject up before, about Casper swearing, but its got worse and it's getting kinda embarrassing, especially when the utilities guy comes to read the meters. He finds it rather amusing though. Also casper is making an impression on Nelson, who is 1 year old and just learning to talk, we keep getting the odd f and b words out of him. So i was wondering if anybody could give me a few tips on how to curb his swearing. thankyou.

congratulations judy. You have given me lots of valuble feed bck in the past, keep up the good work.

i think your very brave taking on a 4 week old baby. I have got 2 african greys aged 1 and two, and i still need help off all the good people on this forum. Good luck with your baby

thankyou all for your feedback, some very useful answers. I don't know if my hands are sweaty. i usually wash them before i handle my birds, but i have thought about salt myself. As for it being sexual, could be. Casper is 2 on the 18th of this month. Can anybody tell me roughly what age they start getting feelings? He has started making funny noises and drooping his wings right down and showing his back, but only when i go to put him back in his cage. thanks Julie.
-
hi, could anybody tell me why my cag casper, loves licking my fingers, especially inbetween them. And when he does it he salivas, even though my hands are perfectly clean. Thanks Julie.
-
thanks for the feedback it's much appreciated. i will try them on a tiny piece to begin with

can anybody tell me if its ok for parrots to eat normal pears?i know they can't have avacado. thaks

Hi everybody. I was wondering if anybody could tell me why my 1 year old cag Nelson, will only come to me? He will give kisses to everybody and say hello, but if anybody asks him to step up, he totally loses it with them and flies straight to me and tries to hide under my chin, which looks rather funny. His partner in crime Cass, will go to anybody she knows for a good a good old fuss.Nelson is a male and Cass is a female i was wondering if this could be anything to do with it.

I know how much it hurts when they fly away, and i really feel for you.I have got 2 cags, Casper and Nelson. Nelson is 11 momths old now,but he flew away when he was 10 months old.On the 23 june this year.I thought my world had come to an end, i was totally heartbroken.Luckily i had phoned my local vets as soon as he went and left them his band number and my phone number.I did all the other things as well, like flyers and advertisements in the local paper and so on.Luckily a person called Mr Jones found him not long after he flew away and he informed the R S P C A.Who collected him and took him to the animal centre they have about 10 miles away from. They phoned my local vet, who who were able to give them his band number and my phone number and they contacted me.It took them 6 days to find me, by which time i has given up hope, but i was ecstatic when they called me and was able to identify him through his band number. I gollected him the next day and have not let him out of my sight since. So please don't give up if you don't hear anything after a few days.I will be thinking about you.Good Luck
