Too true, Judy - Featherheads Anonymous!

One of the countries to which African Greys are indigenous is Mali, in West Africa. It is (more or less) pronounced "Molly". Why don't you just change the spelling - he'll never know the difference!<br><br>Post edited by: LindaMary, at: 2009/03/12 20:07

I mirror all of the above with Maxi. I have had her out and about a lot in her adventure pack, and I am trying to harness train her now (because she is fledging), but it's going VERY slowly. I usually keep a towel or cloth with me to take care of poops, as well. I also carry the hand sanitizer, and if an adult wants to see if she'll step up on them, I let her decide. It's interesting to see who she picks. (I always warn a person that they may be bitten first.) I don't let children handle her, except my daughter and her best friend, both of whom have handled her since she came home to us. I've also been asked more than once if Max is a hawk, Jen. Makes sense, I guess, to some folks: grey, hooked bill... and she is also a Timneh and doesn't have that tell-tale scarlet African Grey tail.

I wonder if that's what it feels like to the parrots, when we just keep talking to them and talking to them and then all of a sudden a word pops out - of them! Maybe Brian Wilson's pet parrots are out there saying "turnabout is fair play!":P Great story, David - thank you for sharing!

That sounds great, Pat. I know my two both love eating at the people table - that's for sure! Since you have so many rescues, do you just "assign" them each a birthday?
-
Well it sounds to me like you've been given the key to his heart, my friend!:silly:

Ok y'all, I just KNOW someone out there has thrown a bang-up bash for their birdy! Testify!

Hey folks, I've got two birds whose hatchdays are coming right up: Maxi will be 2 on March 12, and Tanner will be 2 on April 2. (I know, I know... I'm doomed....) I'll bet there are some great ideas for hatchday celebrations among this creative crew. Would anyone care to share?

Wow - what a beauty he is! And those photos belong in a contest - or at least in BirdTalk!{Feel-good-000200BB}

Well, it's not a video, but perhaps this will help explain it better than I was able to: http://birds.about.com/od/behaviorandtraining/qt/regurgitation.htm
-
Oh yes - it's actually connected to mating and nurturing displays: regurgitating food for the loved one. It's often accompanied by warm feet, slightly drooping and/or trembling wings - any of this sound familiar? Of course it is also possible for birds to really vomit, which is NOT a good sign - hence my question about the circumstances and the accompnaying body language. I'll look around and see if I can find a vidoe clip of a bird doing the "love-gurge" for comparison...

Welcome to the forum, littlehawk. I like the handle - I have had more than one person ask me, when I had my TAG out and about, if she was a hawk. It makes snese, if youthink about it, for people who aren't very bird-conversant - you know : grey, hooked bill....
-
Wow, trish - what a great happy-ending story! Thanks you for sharing the particulars of how you went about finding her and retrieving her, too. These stories are both inspirational and of practical use.
-
At first read, it sounds to me like the regurgitating that they do - to express their love! Can you tell us a little more about the circumstances, and the rest of his body language while he was doing this? That would help to decipher whether it really the "love-gurge" or something more negative.

Hi there - welcome to the forum! Isn't it fun getting ready to adopt a grey - it really is like bringing home another baby, isn't it? If I were you, I would p.m. Talon, our forum Admin, for any advice she might be able to offer on grey availability in MA - she lives in that state as well. Good luck, and keep us posted!

Welcome, poochbabe - and what a mix of sad and happy stories you have brought with your arrival! I am so sad to hear of your loss of Ruben and the 'tiels, but so happy to hear about Ganesha - he sounds just wonderful, and I am so happy for HIM that he fell into your lap. We'll look forward to seeing pictures of the little guy when you have a chance!<br><br>Post edited by: LindaMary, at: 2009/02/27 14:31 -

Now there's a scary thought, Steve! -
How many kids would yoiu swap your Grey for?

What a disturbing story! I don't even know what to think, aside from feeling sick....  -

  Sallas & Jen! Well, I have to admit I have kind of a reputation for being willing to try any food at least once... Actually, the Harrison's aren't half bad. I don't have much of a sweet tooth - maybe that's why I prefer them to Zupreem... (ssshhhh--don't tell Maxi...)<br><br>Post edited by: LindaMary, at: 2009/02/26 21:50 -
Sheila, I am very sorry to hear the news about your mother. My mother (who just turned 87) was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer three years ago, so I know a little of what you are facing and how confusing and frightening a time it can be. You have my prayers that the operation and following treatments go well, and that your mother, like mine, will come through this with many good years left to live. We will all be thinking of you and looking forward to hearing from you whenever you need a little mental vacation!

I have been trying to get Maxi to even TASTE a pellet ever since I've had her. I tried many kinds, tried soaking them, hiding them in treats: nothin' doin'. She was very consistent about simply cleaning them all out of her dish (or whatever) onto the floor or cage bottom. Well, a few months back I decided to try the Tom-Sawyer method: I put a few Harrison's pellets in a saucer, sat down at my dining room table and proceeded to eat them with great relish, one by one, as she watched, and would NOT let her share. It didn't take long for this to pique her interest, and I finally gave her a small piece, which she did eat. But she still wouldn't touch them unless I was eating them, too. A few days ago I took another run at her with them. This time I put half a dozen of them in her "treat dish" - one of the two dishes on her playtop. Normally that dish is where she might find a piece of a millet spray, an almond or a chunk of pomegranate. And last night, as I was sitting nearby "reading a book", I saw her pick out a pellet - crush it up, and EAT it! And then she did it again! She actually ate four of them! Perhaps there's hope after all. I honestly don't know whether to make a fuss or just ignore it - she seems to be pretty responsive to reverse psychology!
