1. Hey everyone! I am a huge animal lover and when I moved out of my parents house, I did not have any dogs. I got Malibu and he will be 9 months old next month. I want to get a puppy!! I found a yorkie puppy that is 13 weeks old. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on how to introduce Malibu to the puppy. He came from a breeder who had dogs and he also sees my boyfriend's parents yorkie who comes up to visit almost everyday. Any suggestions??? THanks!!
2. Malibu has his food and water next to each other on his play gym. As I am looking over at him while I am typing he is dipping a lima bean in  Silly birds!
3. Wow Mika makes Malibu look like a dummy He is almost 8 months old also and I have not taught him anything like that...I guess I'm the dummy Congrats on the new trick...can I just ask though what other things have you been teaching? Malibu doesn't talk yet either just whistles constantly and makes a whole bunch of funny noises. I would like to start teaching him new things but I really don't know what because I have never owned a bird before. Also, what other treats do you use? He did love dried banana chips and would do anything to get one and now he spits them out at me.... is this normal? I don't even know what to use anymore?

Post edited by: Raiderbabe, at: 2008/12/05 00:16
4. ok thank u for the help! I do get very nervous! He is prob. thinking, "why does mom keep touching my tail today?"
5. Thanks for the help! But what do I do about the little pin head piece that is still stuck in poor Malibu? I can feel it with my finger when he actually lets me touch his tail. Will he pull that out on his own or will it just fall out or do I have to do something?
6. Hey everyone! Last week Malibu pulled out one of his tail feathers and there was no blood. The breeder said he might be beginning his first molt. He is almost 8 months old. Today, I looked over at him and he had another tail feather in his mouth. When I took it, it was broken off and not completely pulled out all the way like the last one. There is still a piece stuck in him because I felt it with my hand. There is no blood. What do I do? Will he pull the rest out himself or what do I need to do. It is basically just the tip of the feather stuck in there. Thanks!
7. Thanks for responding! It's been two days and I haven't seen any more feathers yet. Maybe it was just that one! Guess I will have to wait and see.
8. Hey everyone! I was watching Malibu last night and noticed that he was really pulling on one of his tail feathers. Well, I woke up this morning and the feather is on the bottom of his cage. Actually my worst nightmare:ohmy: This is my first bird so I really don't know what to expect. There was no blood from it except a pin size on the very tip of it. My breeder seems to think he is going through his first molt. He is 7 months old. Can anyone help me? It actually looks like another tail feather is ready to come out. What can I expect? Does this sound normal? What can I do to help? Please help me I'm soo nervous and don't know what to expect! THanks everyone!
9. Hey everyone! I got Malibu a new perch to add to his cage. Well needless to say, he does not like it at all. He is deathly afraid of it. Up until this point, I have not had any problems introducing anything to him and he was always anxious to get new toys. What do I do? Help please!! I tried showing it to him and holding it and he just backs away and he even flew away at one point. Today is only the first day I got it so do I just keep showing it to him until he actually gets on it?
10. Wow your pics are beautiful!! He looks like he is really enjoying his time outside. I have one question for u. The tip of his beak looks like the top layer is broken off?? That happened to Malibu about 3-4 weeks ago. Does that beak ever grow back or what happens to it?
11. Hey everyone! I get up early everyday to go to work. Early for me is 6:45 AM. I am not a morning person  Malibu also gets up in the morning at that time and comes out of his cage for almost 45 min. THen he has to go back in while I go to work. He eats his breakfast at this time. I have been giving him a special bean mix that I mmake for him from my breeder. It get heated and served. He also gets birdie bread in the morning from Harrison's and Momma Birdie Bread. He loves this! I try to rotate everyday so he doesn't always eat the same thing. I tried giving him fresh fruit but he doesn't seem to want it and then I have to throw it away when I go to work because it can't sit in there for 8 plus hours. Now he only gets it on the weekends and sometimes at night. My question is: Does anyone have any good ideas for healthy breakfast food that I can leave in there all day and not have to worry about it getting spoiled. Please help! Malibu needs some variety! P.S. Today is his 6th month old birthday!!

Post edited by: Raiderbabe, at: 2008/10/10 13:03

13. I go to work at 7:30 in the morning and I'm gone until 3:30 everyday of the week. I get Malibu out in the morning for about 45 minutes while I get ready for work then he goes in his cage. He is in there all day by himself. I really don't think it is a big deal. He is just fine. He plays with his toys and eats his food all day. When I come home at 3:30 he is out for the whole night with us. I mean I wanted an african grey as a pet and I couldn't quit my job so you still have to go to work. How else could you support your grey  Hope this helps!
14. Hi and welcome! I am also a new grey owner as well. I have only had Malibu for almost 2 months. He was the same way with my boyfriend when I brought him home. He wanted no parts of him. He wouldn't even go near him. Now, after 2 months he allows him to pick him up and he will step up on him. However, he still does not want him touching him or petting him. He only lets me do that  He has come a long way though since day 1 and I'm hoping he continues to bond with him more and more. Last night, he even let him give him a headscratch for the first time ever ! I guess that is improvement. It just takes alot of time. GOod luck
15. Hey everyone! My boyfriend and I are remodeling the kitchen. I already know that you can't use a self cleaning oven Malibu is in the house so I'm buying one that doesn't even have one. I just plan on cleaning it myself. I would like to get a flat top stove. Does anyone have experience with a flat top. Is that ok to cook stainless steel on while Malibu is in the house? I am attaching a link for the stove I am looking at. Can anyone help me with this. I really want to make sure I do everything right for Malibu. Anything else I should keep in mind while remodeling? Here is the link for the stove. http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=258203-83-JBS55DMCC&lpage=none
16. Thanks everyone for the responses! I gave it to Malibu tonight raw and he seemed to really like it. I am lucky that he really likes to try new things. He dives right into his bowl of veggies to see what is new. All I did was cut it into long strips even with the tops on and gave it to him. Is that what everyone else does? I also have another question. I bought Malibu collard greens twice already and i cut them up small and put them in his bowl. He doesn't really seem to like them at all. He picks them out and drops them. Any other ideas on how to get him to eat them?
17. I just bought some asparagus for Malibu. Can anyone tell me how to make it please? I really have no clue because I have never made it. And also after I do find out how to make it, what parts of it are good for him to eat? I am not a veggie person so this is all new to me...B) THanks everyone!
18. O My Gosh! That is sooooo cute! Glad he found a good home. I bet he is the happiest bird alive. Good luck
19. THanks everyone! Now last night he stepped up on my boyfriends hand! What a little bugger with a mind of his own. I am quickly learning Malibu does what Malibu wants to do not what Mommy wants him to do!
20. Hey everyone! I need some advice. Malibu knows step up pretty well but what do I do when he doesn't want to do anything. For example: I bought him a shower perch. He loves being in there with me and he sits very nice. When the shower was over I don't think Malibu wanted to leave. I kept telling him to step up, step up and he would not budge. He just stood there and wouldn't move. What is your advice on how to get him to step up. I was upstairs and didn't have a treat with me so I didn't run downstairs to get one. I just kept saying it until eventually he actually almost slipped on his perch because it was wet and he latched onto me. What do you do if they just don't want to step up? Please help.
21. I use bottled water for Malibu. I buy the gallon jugs at Walmart and keep it in the refrigerator. So when he needs a drink I take it right out of there. I don't know if it should be that cold or not. I will curious to see what others write. Good luck with your baby. Today must be a big day for you!
22. Thanks for the help everyone!
23. Hey everyone. I just bought fresh green beans for Malibu tonight. Can anyone tell me how I prepare them for him to eat?
24. Hey I just bought this same toy tonight almost exactly for Malibu. Mine is the garden style one though. It is yellow, green, blue, and red. I brought it home and he started playing with it right away. Grey lovers must think alike! Good luck!
25. I have asthma but not a bad case of it. I have had it all my life and certain things can trigger it to be worse. Certain breeds of dogs can be really bad for me such as chow dogs, or any dogs with really short, fine hair. I have a yorkie and I am fine around her. My parents own labradoodles and I am fine around them. I just became a new mommy 3 weeks ago to an African grey and nothing has happened with my asthma. I seem to be doing just fine. Just wanted to let you know. It might depend on how severe you actually have asthma. Hope this helps!
