Here is a different aspect of the Ranbow Bridge I discovered lately. I think it's just lovely, and yes, I cried buckets - still am!! Rescuer's Rainbow Bridge Unlike most days at Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined. All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think, as they had never experienced a day like this before. But the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was going on and started to gather at the pathway leading to The Bridge to watch. It wasn't long before an elderly animal came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. The other animals, the ones who had been there for a while, knew what his story was right away, for they had seen this happen far too often. He approached slowly, obviously in great emotional pain, but with no sign of injury or illness. Unlike all of the other animals waiting at The Bridge, this animal had not been restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again. As he walked toward The Bridge, he watched all of the other animals watching him. He knew he was out of place here and the sooner he could cross over, the happier he would be. But, alas, as he approached The Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who apologized, but told him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their people could pass over Rainbow Bridge. With no place else to turn to, the elderly animal turned towards the fields before The Bridge and saw a group of other animals like himself, also elderly and infirm. They weren't playing, but rather simply lying on the green grass, forlornly staring out at the pathway leading to The Bridge. And so, he took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting. One of the newest arrivals at The Bridge didn't understand what he had just witnessed and asked one of the animals that had been there for awhile to explain it to him. "You see, that poor animal was a rescue. He was turned in to rescue just as you see him now, an older animal with his fur graying and his eyes clouding. He never made it out of rescue and passed on with only the love of his rescuer to comfort him as he left his earthly existence. Because he had no family to give his love to, he has no one to escort him across The Bridge." The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, "So what will happen now?" As he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom lifted. Approaching The Bridge could be seen a single person and among the older animals, a whole group was suddenly bathed in a golden light and they were all young and healthy again, just as they were in the prime of life. "Watch, and see.", said the second animal. A second group of animals from those waiting came to the pathway and bowed low as the person neared. At each bowed head, the person offered a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears. The newly restored animals fell into line and followed him towards The Bridge. They all crossed The Bridge together. "What happened?" "That was a rescuer. The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of her work. They will cross when their new families arrive. Those you saw restored were those who never found homes. When a rescuer arrives, they are allowed to perform one, final act of rescue They are allowed to escort those poor animals that they couldn't place on earth across The Rainbow Bridge." "I think I like rescuers", said the first animal. "So does GOD", was the reply.

Post edited by: pearllyn, at: 2010/01/12 12:45

Hi Matt!, As Sheila and Jill have said, it will be the grey who decides who he bonds with, regardless of how hard you or your wife tries. If you can sometimes be away for months at a time, this doesn't sound to me like you can give an african grey the time and attention it needs. If your wife is happy to be the primary caregiver and the bird gets on well with her, all well and good. But if the bird bonds completely with you alone and you then disappear for months on end, that bird may pine for you and could develop behavoural problems. Or the bird might decide your wife is the one to bond with. When my cag was a year old I had to go into hospital for a week, I was dead worried because she stuck to me like glue and didn't get on particularly well with my fiance. They managed ok without me (can you believe it!!? lol) and when I came back Alfie was literally stuck to my neck for three days. Now, a year later, she is very much Davids bird!! Figure that out!! There's just no telling who your grey will bond with - maybe both of you, the only certainty is that he will change your life and need at least four hours out of his cage each day, with lots of interaction and stimulation! Good luck! Lyn & Alfie.

Post edited by: pearllyn, at: 2010/01/12 10:58

So sorry to hear of your loss.

Poor little scrap! How sad that someone could just dump a couple of birds like that. I suppose at least they took them to a store where they would be cared for. Still, it makes me:angry: ! Hopefully he will soon realise he is on to a good thing and stop the feather pulling! I've used my Karma for tonight, but there will be some coming your way tomorrow!

I Didn't See That Coming (You Provide the Story)
pearllyn replied to Quickdood's topic in The GREY Lounge
Well said Jess! Quickdood, I haven't read your other posts yet, but I assume it's a bird your getting - one of the most amazing experiences you will have as a bird owner is having that bird fly to your hand when you call it! But enough about wing clipping, that's not what the thread is about, there are plenty other threads here that cover that topic. I have wanted an African Grey for over 15 years, I finally got her in May 08, my fiance didn't particularly want her, and has in fact had a severe phobia of all birds since childhood, but with a lo-hot of sweet talking from me, he finally relented!! The good news is that having Alfie has gotten David over his phobia! Alfie turns two next month and the shock of my story is, she is totally and completely Davids bird - she hangs off his every word and he spoils her like a baby! The two of them are thick as thieves! I did not see that coming!! There have been ups and downs, but we have quite a happy family most of the time! You will be amazed by your bird each and every day! -
Man! You kept that quiet! I would have been beside myself keeping a secret like that!! How lovely that this poor little soul has found his way into your home. Karma to you for rescuing him! Looking forward to hearing how Tully settles in and how your flock react to him.

This is so sad, I'm sure there have been other posts on here from people observing similar situations, and I'm not sure what can be done, if anything. I'm not allowed to go into live pet shops anymore incase I bring all the poor critters home! I hope this little lad finds a happy ending! Good luck with the application.

I think Jill's advice for making double sure there is no underlying cause for the behaviour is the way I would go. I really feel bad for you, knowing how frustrating (read soul destroying!) it is when a much loved animal is mean to you! I really hope you can get passed this with him and find a sollution you can all be happy with.

That's a very interesting looking cage - it will keep Mikey busy for hours! You will just have to watch and make sure he can stretch his wings fully - of course if he is out more than he is in, this won't be as much of an issue! I have one of the rope perches Judy mentioned and it gets a lot of use - I have one end attached to the cage door, so when the door is open, it acts as a perch on the outside of the cage too, and is a landing or take off point for Aflie! Thanks for sharing your cage with us, I'm sure Mikey will love it! Lyn & Alfie.

Hi Jackie, Nice to have you here! Alfie's middle name is expensive! Unless you know of a relative or friend that you would trust to look after your bird, then paying these rates may be the best option. I'm hoping to go on holiday sometime (!) and there is simply no-one around here that I would feel happy leaving Alfie with! There's an option to take her back to the breeder, but I'm not sure about that. The other option is a house sitter, that way your grey doesn't have the upheaval of leaving home and losing you for a bit! Hope you get sorted! Lyn & Alfie

AbbysDaddy wrote: Oh my goodness Chiweenie's are soooo cute - I'd rescue one in a heartbeat!! I can't believe something so young and gorgeous should need rescuing! I just meant I don't like the real designer breeding - or inbreeding, like dogs with flat faces for showing, or cats with shorter legs to make them (suposably) cuter!

What a gorgeous bird! Thanks for starting this thread.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Rustina sounds like a real character (I have one of those "used to be a boy" girls too!) and we look forward to hearing more about you both, and seeing the pics. Lyn & Alfie

Spoiled and rotten? Maybe. Stunning and beautiful? Definitely!

Ha ha! These photos are excellent - I love this thread. I swear, since I've read this, everytime I picked up the camera to take a mucky beak shot - Alf saw me coming and wiped her beak instantly!!

Lol - I went through a phase with Alfie earlier last year where I was getting regular and serious bites. Touch wood, I think we've knocked that on the head so my scarring days are behind me - phew!! But yes, it was all on my right hand. Haven't had any for a while (you watch - I'll bet I just jinxed me!) P.s. What is a weed whacker stopper!!!??? The most I can figure out is it's something to do with horticulture?
