Haha - I don't know - a bag of horse feed!!! What's your favourite film? (I'm sure it's been asked before but I'm watching Top Gun just now - it's a good 'un!!)
-
Oh Jan I'm sooo happy to hear this. It's been a long road for you and Tobie, but he'll come on in leaps and bounds now and you'll be awestruck very soon by his flying abilities. I'm so glad that you took the step to have his damaged feathers removed - I did that with Alfie and she has never looked back!! Do keep us informed of Tobies progress. One thing I didn't do, but wish I had for posterity - a flight log!! Would love to see a vid too if you get a chance! Congratulations on Tobies newly found status!! x
-
Good grief - it does sound like it will be an interesting outing! Can't wait to see the video, oh, and make sure Tiggs wears a helmet!! Or will you be replacing him with a crash test dummy!?!

I'm so glad to hear you are taking all things into account with your outdoor flying whg - you seem to have thought of every angle. But by taking this bird into your home, you've already taken some of her freedom from her - is it really worth the risk to try and give some of it back? I do very much agree with giving these birds as much freedom as possible, but personally, not to the risk of causing possible harm. I do wish you luck with your free flying endeavour, maybe the last thing on your checklist before you free fly her, should be to teach her how to fend for herself in the wild should the worst happen. Good luck with everything.

Post edited by: pearllyn, at: 2010/01/30 00:43

Adarakay, I am so so sorry to hear of your loss. Losing a pet at anytime for any reason is so sad, but to lose an animal not yet in her prime because of a pure accident is so hard to come to terms with. Thank you so much for thinking of us at this sad time and letting us know how Archimedes was doing - I had so prayed for a happier outcome. Please know our thoughts are with you, and that Archimedes will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge. xx

I do hope Archimedes will be alright after this. Internal damage is a real possibility, as has been said, and the only way to know for sure is to take her to a vet. If you can't afford it then you must try to come to some arrangement with your vet to pay your bill in installlments. The bottom line is you are responsible for Archimedes and owe her the best care available. I imagine if there was an injury you could see (like, heaven forbid, a broken leg or something) you would pull out all the stops and find some way to get her to a vet. An internal injury could be just as serious, if not more so, but harder to spot. She may be absolutely fine - but it's better to be safe than sorry! I haven't had any experience with an accident like this, but it's possible she could go into shock aswell - maybe one of the more knowlegable members could offer advice on that. Hopefully she will perk up soon start eating and talking again and we will all have worried for nothing! Just please keep a really close eye on her and keep us informed.

Hi! I'm relatively new to greys - Alfie has owned us for nearly two years now! SHe was our first grey and we just love her to bits. I'll answer your questions as best I can on the experience I've had with Alfie. She is one of the most intelligent animals I've ever come across. She most definitely listens when we talk to her, and I'd say understands what we are trying to teach her. (she says "uh-oh" when she is somewhere she knows she shouldn't be and tells us she needs a whoopsie if she's not on her perch - sometime she will flly there herself, and if we place her there, 9 times out of ten she will go when she gets there) So, intelligence? Check!! I don't have much experience with other parrots, had a conure about 10 years ago and ALfie is definitely quiter than he was! She has two vocal sessions a day - the rest of the time she is fairly quiet. her vocal sessions consist of her going through her entire vocabulary whistles, tunes, words - the lot!! And yes, she is usually loudest when the film you are watching is just coming to the bit that explains everything and inevitabley, you miss the punchline!! Birdy dust. I have hay fever and am allergic to cat hair and I get on fine with Alfie's dust - and there is a fair bit of it!! I did wonder about that before we got her, but it hasn't been a problem. Bathtimes. Alfie isn't nuts about water - but even at almost 2yo, we are making breakthroughs with the water all the time, and I have high hopes that she will someday enjoy a shower with me. She is starting to look for a running tap and spending time trying to be brave enough to jump into a shallow sinkful of water! Quietness! Alfie is, on the whole, definitely not! She's into everything, explores everything, if you've got it, she wants it - if the dog has it, she wants it! I think she's a bit of a tomboy! Having said that, she still likes her quiet time with us of an evening where she will just sit on our knee and get a tickle before bed! From a young age, Alfie has gone with us in the car with no objections. She will be pretty happy being where ever we are. She has a harness and will go for walks etc. Toys, Little ones will be accepted by Alfie within a couple of day - sometimes immediately! Big one can take up to a month!! Sorry for the long winded reply, but I hope it is helpful to you!

glad to hear there has been no ill effects from his little self service munch!!

Hi jgoewe1, Karma for taking on this poor little soul who is obviously in desperate need of some tlc. Judy and Janet have given excellent advice - but it's so important it's worth saying again - patience patience and more patience! It's an important requirement for any bird, but espicially so for an abused one. You really haven't had him that long either. Once he's used to his surroundings he may start opening up to you a bit more. Don't force him with anything - it's best to let him come to you when he's ready. If he is letting you scratch his head that's so great!! Keep offering scratches but stop before he becomes stressed out from it - that way he will remember it being nice and not becoming a scary thing. Some greys don't take kindly to showers either. Many members heres use a spray mister with pure aloe vera juice for birds with bald bits - perhaps he would accept that better. As Judy has said, this isn't going to happen overnight, but it is do-able and will be really worthwihile once you have achieved what you are setting out to do. Good luck with Mookie - he really deserves the kindness and understanding you are willing to give him. lyn & Alfie
