  1. Goralka08- I'd love to hear how McKenzie reacts to so many new people at your house for the holidays! My mom loves Lacey but unfortunately tries to "force" a relationship with her. Lacey is somewhat cautious and prefers things (well okay, prefers EVERYTHING) on her terms. When my mom comes to visit she immediately goes over to Lacey and offers her finger. Lacey politely turns away. Then my mom will try to force her little foot onto her finger by grabbing it with her other hand! GRR! One of these days there's gonna be blood if she (my mom) doesn't learn. I have tried to explain to her that, in my view, she needs to back off and slowly and gently establish trust with Lacey, and when Lacey's ready...she'll come to her. Sometimes I'd like to force a little common sense on some people!
  2. That's fantastic news! Congratulations and I hope your relationship continues to grow!
  3. Lacey gets Harrison's high potency coarse. Her vet and the local P.E.A.C director recommended it. She is also fed a variety of fresh vegetables, fruits and a high quality seed each day. I also mix a little bit of red palm oil in with her vegetables. Oh, and she insists on orange juice every morning! She manages to distribute a large amount of her food all over the floor (not to mention walls, adjacent rooms and windows). My husband likes to point out that she must waste at least $10.00 worth a day throwing it around the room. I tell him that's why the jungle grows!
  4. Just want to say thanks to HeatherStrella for posting this thread. I am newly owned by a Grey (3 weeks today) and hope to benefit from all of your responses! I love this forum, it has been immensely helpful. Erica
  5. Searching: How are you giving Monkey his baths? A bowl of water or? Lacey arrived home 3 weeks ago and she's 4 months and doesn't like bath-time one bit. I run some lukewarm water in the sink with a towel on the bottom and put her in it. I'm looking for other options. Did Monkey like water right away? Lacey is also napping a lot during the day and she sleeps between 10 & 11 hours per night. Congrats on your new Grey!
  6. Lacey was shipped via Alaska Airlines from California to Alaska. I was a complete wreck that day worrying about her. When I picked her up the cargo agents had her right there on the counter with them talking to her...it was a huge relief. She seemed completely fine. When I got her home she played and ate and preened. I feel so lucky that she didn't have a bad experience.
  7. We paid $850 for Lacey 3 weeks ago, fully weaned, from an awesome breeder in Calif. It cost another $175 to have her shipped to Alaska. But as someone else stated....priceless
  8. What a great playstand SweetFX! I bought a small playstand for Lacey and she hates it, I have her sit on it a few minutes each day hoping she gets used to it and will eventually enjoy it. I am having a foraging tree built for her also, and I'm expecting that will take some getting used to. Lacey just got home 3 weeks ago, the wait was agonizing! She's been a pure joy. Congratulations SweetFX on your new family member!
  9. Lacey (a CAG) is just over 3 1/2 months old and is 480 grams. She eats like a horse and is always on the move. Her breeder said she's a large bird. Her vet said she's a very happy, healthy baby.
  10. Thanks Lyn! I read an article in Reader's Digest probably about 10 years ago about a woman with an African Grey and have wanted one ever since. I had never heard of a Grey prior to that. How were the first few days with him? I'm so excited about her arrival but afraid that once she gets here I'll just sort of stare at her, clueless as to what to do with this grey feathered thing in front of me! I read that it is common for them to go thru a grieving period for a few days. Did that happen with Alfie? If so, how long. Did you hold him a lot in the first couple of days? Did he lose weight initially? Anything ya got would be helpful! Nice to find a kindred soul! Erica
  11. Thank you everyone for welcoming me! My little Lacey Grey will arrive next week from the breeder. She is a fully weaned baby. It seems I am fully consumed with her already! I suddenly remember what it feels like to be 5 and awaiting Santa's arrival! This time Santa's sleigh will be in the form of an Alaska Airlines Jet bringing her from her birthplace in California to her new home in Alaska. Her cage and stands are all ready to go with too many toys to fit so she has a large box of "spare" toys. I have made and frozen a bunch of bird muffins and have bought more food than I know what to do with. Is it possible to spoil a bird you've never seen? Yep! Again, thanks for the wonderful welcome! I'll post pics when she arrives. Erica:)
  12. I have wanted an African Grey for several years and am finally getting one as a b-day gift from my husband! Couldn't be more excited! We don't have any birds and this will be my only experience with a bird. Hope I'm not jumping off the deep end with a grey but I've been preparing with books, ect. This forum seems to be a wonderful resource! Any advice would be more than welcome. I will post pics when she arrives. Her name is Lacey Grey. Erica
  13. Are non-stick cooking sprays such as Pam okay for birds? Erica
