  1. Hello everyone. I have looked at several posts about do it yourself playstands. I have a question though, how do you secure your perches, stands, toys, food and water dishes etc.. to each other or to the base of your playstand. Do you use glue? if so what kind is good for a bird? I am looking for anyone willing to share some idea's, tips, or tricks. Thanks. 56 days and counting to pickup.
  2. Awesome pictures. I am going to see my TAG on the 24th of August and bringing it home on the 15th of September. Cant wait. Best of luck to you and your new baby.
  3. ---------"OK, the refresh rate on a standard TV is 30 frames per second. Humans see at around 12 - 14 frames a second. This means that to humans, anything over 15 frames a second appears to be continuous movement. Greys on the other hand, see between 27 to 30 frames second. This means anything over 28 frames a second appear as continuous movement to them also. So, in conclusion, the standard TV picture appears as continuous movement to our Greys. One thing the higher frame rate does for our greys and any other bird for that matter. Is it allows them to navigate at higher speeds and refresh their mental imagery faster meaning they can swerve and miss that branch or other obstacle. If we flew, we would hit the tree, branch or other obstacle before we realized it was coming that fast. Thats why "George of the Jungle" always slams into those trees. "--------------- I also heard that this also pertains to flouresent lights and the rate at which they flicker. To humans the light is constantly on but to a grey it is in a constant flicker, so I've heard.<br><br>Post edited by: Medic3709, at: 2008/07/17 22:14
  4. You have no idea. I am not a patient person in the first place and so many times before I have done the research and found that for some reason or another It was not a right time to get a larger bird, but this time everything has fallen into place and it kind of suprised me when I got off the phone with the lady to go take a look at them that this was really going to happen. We get to see them on the 24th but they won't be ready for pick up until about the 12th of September. In the long run the 3 1/2 hour drive will be worth it.
  5. Ok so I need some help from all of you seasoned and new Grey owners out there. On August 24th we are going to Des Moines Iowa for a bird show, it just so happens that the lady we are going to buy our bird from is going to be there with the entire clutch of babies and we will get our chance to pick out the one that will eventually go home with us. My question is, in a clutch of six TAG's how do you pick just one? What traits, actions, demeanor, etc.. do I look for? How will I know what one to pick? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.<br><br>Post edited by: Medic3709, at: 2008/07/17 14:11
  6. I have read several posts about the harm that fumes from candles and cleaners can have but I have a question. We do not burn candles, we use candle warmers ( electric ) that do not produce anything but the fragrance of the candle. Are these still dangerous? Is it the odor from the candle or the carbon from the flame and burning. Also I have heard people talk about air fresheners that they use with birds what kind of fresheners are out there to use. Also I am looking into a natural gas vented fireplace that burns natural gas but don't know if it will release any harmful fumes, anyone else have something similar to this or any experience?<br><br>Post edited by: Medic3709, at: 2008/07/16 04:42
  7. At this point the only other things going to be in the same room is our computer and a wardrobe closet.
  8. So I just got off the phone with the breeder that we are going to get our little feathered friend from, we had decided to get a Timneh but unfortunatley there are no breeders and no reasonably priced stores in the area. I found a lady about 4 hours away who currently has a clutch of six all of which do not yet have a home and we get to go pick out the one that wants us. She says they will be ready to go about September / October. Now my question for you experienced grey owners. We are finishing the renovations on our house and have decided to make a "bird room" a dedicated room. Now I may sound silly but we decided to paint the walls of the room a lighter gray color similar to that of the bird and I want to pain the trim a maroon color to match the tail color. Is this going overboard? Its just that I heard that sometimes the bird feels more comfortable when it can blend in. My second is, will the sharp contrast of color cause any problems such as frights or feeling like he is in one HUGE flock of greys?
  9. I am curious as to what I am going to need in place when I finally get to bring the little ball of feathers home. I know obviously a cage and food but what is the best type of food for a newly weaned baby grey? But also what kind of toys should I get, just small simple toys or extravagant with all the bells and whistle toys? I have ready some of the forums that say to put the first perches low the the bottom of the cage to limit the space they may fall, and I have heard to not put the perches that come with the cage in as they are too smooth and the babes can slip off of them. What kind of cleaning material, bathing, medical etc. And my final question for anyone that may know is I am interested in getting it microchiped and possibly with a GPS type chip. Anyone know where to get them? I hope to be able to pay for my little featherd friend in August or September and over the next couple of months we will be buying the cage, play gyms, toys and etc, but just need some guidance as to what I am going to need right away. I know as it ages the more inticate the toys need to be to stimulate them, but I didn't want to have this big scary alien looking toy hanging in the cage to frighten it. Thanks in advance.
  10. Hello all, my name is Michael. My wife and myself will be moving into our first house in August and shortly after will be proud parronts of a baby African Grey. We previously had a cockatiel when we lived with a family member and due to some unfortunate circumstances had to move into an apartment where birds were a no no. So my parents have happily kept the tiel for us and we are excited to get him back when we move. Anyway I have done hours and hours of online research for all aspects of living in a birds world and looking for any information on training, cleaning, housing, rasing, playing, and well being of a Grey and I would wholeheatedly accept any and all ideas, tips, or advice that anyone has to offer. There is a local woman who runs a little animal store that specializes in birds, she has somewhere in the neighborhood of 100+ birds herself in her house that she cares for and some of these are breeding pair that she then uses to sell. She has agreed to let us come up when the chick is born and help with some of the feedings and weaning when it is old enough and then eventually take home with us. The only other animal in our family is a mutt dog about two years old and the tiel we hope to get back, but other than that we are on pins and needles waiting for our newest flock member to arrive. Again any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and hope to have fun here.
