  1. Thanks, I'll go with the shredded newspaper and paper towel option. Should I put a wire grate on top of it or not? Does this matter? I read an article stating it helps to support the baby's balance in learning to walk and get around.
  2. All, I will be picking up my baby TAG at the end of the month. He/she will be between 6 - 7 weeks old. I will continue to handfeeding until the baby is weaned. I have ready various books on the handfeeding and weaning process and will be spending time with the breeder over the course of a few days to become comfortable. Everything that I read so far dealt with handfeeding and weaning since its a serious commitment. I was wondering if anyone can give me advise on housing. I understand the baby should be in a brooder until about 8 weeks then transitioned to a cage. In the brooder, what should I put on the floor? One article I read suggested pine shavings but I am concerned about the baby ingesting it and blocking the esophagus. Another article talked about "spayed" legs which I want to avoid. Thanks in advance for the advice.
  3. Thanks so much for posting these pictures. I am expecting a baby TAG and I wanted to get an idea of what he/she looks like at various stages in life. I can't begin to describe my excitement. Also, your article about handfeeding greys was very informative and I will definitely use what I've learned from it and the breeder. Thanks again!
  4. First of all, thanks you to everyone for providing me your own insight on banding and microchips. Dave, thanks for sharing with me your glimpse on lost birds. I realize that a lost bird most likely will not be recovered despite a leg band or a microchip. The takeaway here is they are members of your family just like my biological kids. As a parent, I try never to put them in harms way or an un-necessary risk. The bit about an AG older than 10 days cannot have a closed band applied leads me to believe it will be an open band which can be easily removed. Why bother then? I'll opt for no leg band applied and ensure I get the band and birth certificate for keeping.
  5. Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and I am excited about hearing from others and contributing in the future. I am a bird lover and pretty much have been for quite some time. Our family consists of a dog, 2 young boys, cockatiels and budgies. A new arrival to our nest will be a young weaned TAG late in June/early July 2008. We reside in San Diego, CA. whether the weather is always perfect. My hobbies/activies include: aviculture, ocean conservation, marine life conservation, ocean activities and sports (surfing, sea kayaking, ocean swimming and SCUBA). Despite being a single father, my life is rich - love from everyone in our family. I am in the IT profession and I am proud to have used my skills or knowledge on something personal and fun. Just recently, I created a "bird bunch" page as an offshoot of my personal website (http://www.cdelatorre.com). It has a little bio of each feathered friend and a bird cam for myself and others. When the new arrival, the TAG, comes home I'll make sure to post info on him/her. Looking forward to my involvement on this forum. 6. All, I am new to the grey forum and I wanted to let everyone know I just put a deposit for a TAG and expecting to bring it home within the month. I am so excited I can't sit still. I can't remember a time when I didn't want an AG. I was asked by the breeder whether or not I wanted the TAG banded. I understand the purpose of the band and agree it is a great way to track or identify the AG but I am concerned about the TAG's comfort, hazards and health concerns. I am considering having him/her microchipped as an alternative. Can anyone give me advice, pros and cons about either option? Thanks in advance.
