hi just read the thread and i have the same problem with monty. he is two & half years old but has just started shredding his feathers, but unlike primusDCE monty has done all his back feathers and chest feathers too ( will try an add a pic) i think it may have started 6-7 months ago when he clipped his wing whilst flying from the lounge to the conservatory, he broke some his wing feathers half way across and started to chew them off, i think this has just escalated into him chewing every where... i do spray him but he growls and doesnt like it so maybe dont do it as oftern as i should as i dont want to upset him even more. he is out of his cage all day until bed time and has so may toys and trees to keep him amused ( i have enclosed a pic) but the pic only shows a tiny protion of what he has to keep him entertained. i would love any suggestions as to what to do as the amount of time that has passed since him catching his wing and he is still chewing. the only feathers on his chest & back is the soft downy stuff and you can see through this. he plays and talks loads and his behaviour and diet are still the same. he doesnt pluck the feathers out he chews them and shreds them.... thanks in advance diane

Hi Judygram thanks for the reply. There hasn't been any thing else that has changed as far as i know. He was sitting looking out of front window at the time and flew off and clipped his wing on the door frame. he usually sits there on his perch, and dosn't get spooked to easy so can't really say this may be a cause. as regards to bathing we do mist him with the bottle but having read your threads think we might be doing it from to far away. I will get closer and try to get him as wet as possible. He does go into the ensuite when we shower and sits on the shower door but wont let us take him inside .he is as chatty as normal and he has pulled all of the broken feather off now, i will just have to monitor what he does with the rest of his feathers. when you feel his chest it's all prickly so i can tell that he has chewed the feathers there, but he hasn't actually pulled any out... he isn't bald...kust very scraggly lol . I will continue with the spraying and keep an eye one him thanks again di

My Monty is 2 1/2 years old and is flighted. He has approx 8-10 hours a day out of his cage. The length of his flight path through the lounge, dining room & conservatory is 51ft with the lounge & dining room both being 12ft wide and the conservatory 21ft wide. I think you'll agree he has lots of room, But needless to say whilst flying one day last wk he clipped his wing on a door frame. This dint bother him but he has broken his feathers right across his wing. I can only guess that this is now annoying him as he wont leave them alone and has started to shred them. I am guessing that he wont give up until he has chewed all the broken ones off, but I am a little concerend as he has shredded all his chest feathers too now . is there anything i can do to help? I dont want this to turn him into plucker. He has regular baths ( in his water bowl lol) and apart from looking like a scraggy (adorable) rat then he's fine with no behaviour change. Any advise would be gratefully received, shall I intervine or let things run their course? thanks Di & Monty

oh wow how this site has changed it's fab... I have not been on here for at least 12months just popped on to see if i could find and answer to another question i've got about monty.. didnt have much luck in finding a suitable thread but I did notice this one and allthough it seems like an old topic, I felt I just had to post my biting story. It happened about 6 months ago and monty had been climbing on the door handle of my french doors and had slipped and fell, he's a pretty nifty flyer as he is out of his cage for about 8 to 12 hours a day, and he mamaged to take off from about 1ft above the foor, fly between my 1 sofas in the conservatory and land on his java tree all out of puff (lol). I hurried over to make sure he was ok as I saw the whole thing happen, he stepped up on my hand and I took him over to his stand so he could get a drink and calm down, I leaned forward to give him a little kiss and he bit my lip. I knew straight away it was totally my fault, I had picked the wrong moment for kisses. My lip was bouring with blood, and i was home alone. I asked monty to step up on my hand and he did so no problem and I put him in his cage, sorted him fresh fruit and water, and then took my self upto the hospital for them to have a look at as I couldnt stop it bleeding and there was a hole, which i was worried about infection. The nurses said it needed stitching but they couldnt do it because the bite passed through the lip line and it might not heal straight,So! I was given an appointment to go straight upto to see the plastic surgeon, and 5 hours later, because i had to wait while she was in theatre, she stitched it for me, 4 stitches we insterted and now 6 months on its all healed lovley with just a tiny moon shaped scar hardley visible..... needless to say I dont give monty any more kisses.......

thanks guys im much more settled now at leaving monty at home, im sure he'll be fine... just one last little quiestion:whistle: poop!!!! monty never poops in any of his cages as he spends so much time out them. he waits till morning for his BOMB!!! and waits until some get him out after work before doing his poop, i was just wondering, will he be ok and realise, probably when he is desperate, that it's ok to to poop in his cage? i have never told him not to poop in his cage he just chooses not too and im a little worried, hoping he won't make himself ill... thanks in advance.......

i was thinking tho it might be easire let him sleep in his down stairs cage, do u think this will be ok, will it upset his sleep too much?
-
thanks guys for the replys... monty has a very large cage which is down stairs and he goes in this at 2.30 untill 5.30 when hubby comes home. his sleep cage is in our bedroom. my daughter is the one who monty will let handle and when we go out for odd evening she manages to get him in his cage ( in one piece  ). he isnt perch trained as he always flies off when he goes near his cage. i think he spends so much time out that he just doesnt want to go back in.also he never climbs volentry into his cage. he sits every night on the back of the chair saying bo bo's time but when we take him up he will fly off (given the chance) to the top of the door. so we put one hand over his wings and he goes in usually without too much fuss and settles down right away, grinding his beak well thats after he's sat for 5 minutes with his beak poking through the bars having lots of kisses  :woohoo: i think i will feel much better going away knowing he is at home, and if i start letting my daughter put him to bed from now until september he and she will be used to it.
-
another thing is that monty usually bites the kids.. ...so they wouldnt be having him out, would this be cruel when he can see all his toys and climbing things in the next room but to be able to get to them... should i start now giving him more cage time in readyness for september??

i have just read all these posts as im am now in the same boat. monty will be 17 months in spetember when we go away for a week adn i am already worried about what to do with him. i have already booked him in the pet shop like casper did at first, but im really worried will he be ok? monty is a fully flighted, out of the cage bird for at lest 10-14hours every day, more at wk ends and we have never left him in the time we've had him. i know he will hate been in a cage for a week 24/7 at the shop. i could leave him here and trust to my 2 kids feeding and watering him, in his own very large cage in his own enviroment, but they are 18 and 21 and will probably have a house full of mates with the load music, so im stuck as for what to do.. monty has seen all these mates and heard the loud music before when in his cage but we're are usually right there and so the kids tend not to get too out of hand, but while we're away who knows? do u guys think monty will be better of at home, which may calm the kids a little because he's here or would u go for the pet shop option?it really worries me and we nearly didnt go away this year at all purley because of monty but then i realised he's gonna be here a long time and to never have any more holidays just isnt fair on us. thanks in advance x

thanks alot guys i will check out the links. the welded wire sounds like what im after. i thought of having a tray in the bottom with sand(if sand is ok) so then i dont have to keep scrubbing the path free of poop:blink: i think collapsable sounds good too because i was wondering about the affect of a british (very wet) winter would have on the wooden frame and what i would have to do to make it safe for monty every summer.

hi, ive not posted in a while but do still come on and read what others have posted. i have been to busy enjoying monty who has settled into our home and family wonderfully. He is starting to talk now at 9 months old and says 'hello, wheres dadda?,whats a doggy do ( then woofs) whats pussy cat do (then meowww's and cluck cluck's) bless:P he trying to learn what a chicken does now but he's a little confused  i was thinking of building an outdoor aviary for monty so he can go out when we are out there ( not to live in) but was wondering what to use on the sides chicken wire? or a sronger wire grill? will this have to be a specific spacing like the bars on his cage? thanks in advance for any advice and i will try to post some recent pics of monty

sorry not been on for a while had internet problems.. montys Chlamydia results have come back clean just waiting for feather test results now but not sure what thats for, might be to see if they've been chewed, which i know some of them have because i have seen feathers just fall out and montys pick them up and chews them like he chews everything:laugh: i have since read that they have a moult around 6-7 months and another at 12months and then every 12months thereafter so i now know in my heart that he is moutling because i have never seen him pull a feather, they just fall out while he is playing (he is a rough little boy:laugh:) and even while we are stroking him, someitmes about 10 a day.thanks for all your kinds words of support

hi dan thanks for the reply, i will go and look at the link you provided right away... as for montys weight it was 408 (g i think) which dropped to 400 in 2 wks now its 390 2 wks later again:blink: he seems so healthy tho and very active, so unless he's eating loads i dont see how the weight is going to go on.. he is now 7 months old and has between 7 and 9 hours out of cage time a day and he's fully flighted too.. thanks again your advice is very much appreiciated x

well montys settled down in his sleep cage in our bedroom and is getting a couple extra hours sleep each night now which should be good for him... however:unsure: i took him to the vets again(she said to return in after 2 wks)she now thinks he might be plucking as the feathers he's losing are from different parts of his body and they usally lose a few feathers from one place then a few from another in a systematic fashion, when moulting, she says.. but she is also doing feather and stool tests at the lab, one for any sign of chewing on the feathers and the other for chlamdyia:unsure:  i am unsure, although read a little of what this is??is it treatable? will he be ok?? he has lost weight again and i cant seem to get him to eat anything, he justs want to play all the time:unsure: do your greys sit and eat a full meal?? monty will have a 1/4 round toast then leave the rest.. then 1 piece of melon out of his fresh fruits and leave the rest..he will eat a sugar snap pea out of his salad bowls and leave the rest...eat a few carrots out of his vegg dinner and not touch anything else.. he has access to pelletts all day( harrisons&keytee rainbow) which he will nibble from time to time and in his bowl on his java tree has nut and raisins ..he also has hanging granola bars(x2) and 2 foraging boxes full of treats.. but the amount of food which he eats is really worring me:( any ideas please??? i have done birdie bread.. wont touch it i have bought nutri berries.. wont touch them he munches on 2-3 palm nuts a day but just seem to sling the flesh and chew for ages on the nut in the middle  please help!! he doesnt eat any poeple food really either, although we're eating he just likes to sit on the edge of our tray and have a taste but doesnt eat anything.. he wont eat egg.. or rice.. i am really stuck as what to do next.. sorry for the long message:blink:

hi ev1 just had this reply to my email and here is a copy of my responce to it too... Your email regarding the Parrot Twinis Treat has been forwarded to my attention. We are sorry how upset you are with the way this product is manufactured and I have passed your email to our Quality Control in Germany. You can be assure, this will be reviewed by them. Other than that, right now there is no more I can do for you. But I would be happy to send you some other types of Vitakraft treats for your Parrot as a courtesy. Please forward me your home mailing address. Thank you, Natalie Farry Administrative Assistant Vitakraft Sun Seed Inc. 800-237-3324 x 10 732-560-7499 Fax Hello May I thank you for your swift response, and will you please keep me informed as what is going to happen with these bird treats, How something such as a metal staple can be used in a food product is just beyond comprehension. I have not put a complaint in to gain free gifts, i have a genuine concern for other parrots and what could happen to them, any birdsafe parrot treats you wish to send will be gratefully recieved and I shall find my local bird rescue centre and pass them on.

i have just email vitakraft about this food product with the staple in, i just cant get if off my mind, im not very good at writing letters but i'll let you know what they say.. he's a copy if you want to read it to who it may concern 22/10/08 please forgive me as I am not much use at writing letters but just wanted to voice my opinion.. this is to do with a vitakraft product I recently purchased of a supplier online. this product is the vitakraft twinis. I am an owner of a 7 month old African Grey for whom I bought this item, he wasn't interested at first but as my parrot ( Monty) began to discover a taste for this item he, in five minutes, more or less totally destroyed it. I sat and watched in amazement at the fun he was having and thought I must buy more of these. As I sat and watched I noticed he had gotten down to the wood that runs through the middle of this bread/cake type bar, I was not worried at this because he likes ( as do all parrots) to chew wood.. I was then horrified to see that there was a metal staple attaching the wood to the hanging wire, which he was obviously trying to remove too, I would hate to think what could have possible happened had I not been there watching him, he certainly would have had that staple out in no time.. Can I just ask why you find it necessary to attach the food products in this way??. other brands attach it by moulding it around plastic!!?I think is absolutely disgusting and could have seriously harmed my baby grey. I am trying to inform as many people as possible to the danger this product, I am on a forum and have done a post on there and many many people who will not now be buying this or any products that look to be attached in the same way, I definitely will not. I shall also email the company from where it was bought it to let them know just what type of goods you are providing. If only one parrots get injured buy these horrendous treats then that will be one to many, I cannot possibly see past the stupidity of attaching a food item to something with a staple???? I have photo evidence if you want me to email it to you, I didn't enclose it in this email and some people just delete things with an attached file. yours very angrily Mrs Pyatt
