1. The concrete perches are ok but not anything that is like sandpaper. Sandpaper perches will make their feet sore because is takes the skin off. If you get brave enough to try the clipping again.. Get some Quick Stop. It works better than flour or cornstarch but you have to moisten it before putting it on. I was wondering why it wasn't working till I read the directions again. Also don't use the dog clippers. They are too big. I made this same mistake. The trick to trimming the nails is to do in regularly and only take off a little at a time. The vein inside the nail will gradually recede with regular trimming. I said I was not going to try to do Whisper's again after it went so badly the last time but when I took her to the vet they charged $22. Just for a nail trim. This was on top of the $200 bill for the rest of the visit and labwork. Heck I can get a whole manicure for less than $22 LOL:laugh:

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/01/23 02:02
2. That does seem to be a lot. As long as I take Whisper over to the playstand about every 20 mins and let her poop we don't have too many accidents. She has always been kind of considerate and will try not to poop on me. For instance if I am sitting at the computer and she is on my shoulder she will go down to my arm and poop over the side. Funny thing is that she used to poop on my husband all the time. {We are now separated.} She would be on me and he would come and get her and as soon as she got on him she would poop. He used to get so mad. It is funny the reaction I get when I tell people that my bird spends a lot of time on my shoulder. They say "ooh doesn't she poop all over you?" I say hardly ever. I would say that if your bird goes every ten mins then start out by taking him to his stand every ten mins and say "go poop." As soon as he does say good boy and pick him back up. I bet that if you are consistent with it that the poops will get farther apart and he will start waiting for you. P.S. I just got up to test it. Even though I have only had her off the stand for about 5 mins I went into the other room put her on her stand and said "go poop" and she immediatley did. I said good girl and picked her back up immediately. You see picking her back up is the reward. Oh and don't react when he has an accident. We know how they love drama and could just do it to get a reaction from you. 3. My whisper was doing mumblings like that at a very early age too. Around 5 months. By six months it was starting to get clearer and we could make out a few words if we listed carefully from the other room. By 8-9 months she was saying several phrases clearly but still in the other room. When were were in the other room we would just answer her back and repeat what she was saying. Occasionally something would pop out if we were in the room and there was some background noise going on. By 10 months she was saying about 15 phrases clearly and in front of us. She is now 13 months and seems to be stuck on about 6 of her favorite sayings. She will talk to me when she is sitting on my shoulder. I keep saying new stuff to her but I guess she will go forward when she is ready. I was proud the other day that she talked in front of the vet and her office staff. Your bird is doing great. Just be patient and keep talking. He is making baby sounds because he is still a baby.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/01/21 23:44
4. Whisper is nearly 14 months old and I have had her since 16 weeks. So far no bites. I know that sooner or later it is bound to happen and I know my feelings are going to be so hurt when it does. If I am doing something or touching her somewhere she doesn't like, she politely takes hold of my finger and moves it.
5. Whisper was already on Harrison's when I got her and I kept her on it. That is all that is in her dish while I am gone during the day. When I get home at night I put her on her playstand and give her a few more of the Harrison pellets and also some Zupreem for a little variety. This is also when I give her some sweet potatoe and grapes. Also some of my supper if it is something that is good for her. So she gets about 1/2 Harrisons and the other half is other stuff. I got her some of those Harrisons Palm oil Power Treats but she won't touch them.

peanuts

My bird must be crazy. She won't eat nuts of any kind. I have tried them all. She will break the peanut open and shred the shell but she doesn't eat the nuts. She does however go crazy for grapes.
7. Plain warm water and a wash cloth work for me.
8. What do you think about the name "Tinker Bell"? My grand daughter and I watched the movie this weekend and all that green and yellow kind of reminds me of her.
9. Thanks. I think her coloring is really nice but best of all she is very sweet. Hand fed for 5 months with lots of extra attention. Someone else had a deposit down on her and never came to pick her up. On the 25th I have to drive 4 hrs one way to pick her up. But I think she is worth it. I am open to suggestions for girl names. I had Whisper for about 2 weeks before I chose her name. I do not have multiple bird syndrome.:silly: 2 is all I have the time and finances for. They are already calling me the bird lady at work. I live alone and don't have much social life. I am happy just puttering around the house with my birds to keep me company. 10. Whisper is getting a little sister. She is a sweet little Blue Front Amazon DNA female. She is coming home next week. Isn't she cute! She is 8 months old. Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/01/19 02:40

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/01/19 02:41
11. Glad to hear that Merlin is coming around. Whisper has said "I love you" once and only once. Can not get her to say it again no matter what I do.
12. I would love to have a cockatoo but I know they are too much for me. There is one at the pet store that I cannot hold any longer because if I do I will end of taking her home. They are such adorable birds. I am looking at a 7 year old Orange Winged Amazon this Saturday. Whisper needs a buddy and I have a the room and heart for another bird. Good luck with George. He sounds like a lot of fun.

Low Albumin???

Thanks for responding. I am relying on what she says but I am just a worry wart. I just wondered if any other members had birds who had tested with low proteins before. I guess I was just hoping someone else had the same experience and would say it turned out fine. But with 25 views and only one reply I guess not. i will try to put my worries in the closet for now.
14. Hi Dan, congrats on your new baby. Have you picked out a name yet?
15. When whisper went to the vet the other day she said she looked wonderful. But now her blood work came back with a low albumin. The vet says not to worry since she looks great and all other blood result were fine. Also she is on Harrison's. We will do a protein electropheresis in about a month after molting is over. She also said that her Albumin was a little tiny bit low on her first baby check up and now is lower. She used a different lab this time though because she saw her on a saturday and she says she prefers Univ of Miami where it went the first time. She says she doubts there is anything to worry about because whisper is one of the best looking and sweetest Grey she has seen in a long time but you know I am kind of worrying anyway. There is this little voice in my head that is saying "well you know you have always thought she was kind of too quiet and not as active as she should be." You know second guessing everything. She is a small Grey. When I see some of your big birds she looks tiny. Low albumin can indicate liver problems, kidney problems, and malabsorption. The vet also says that that there is a bell curve and she just might be at the low end of it and it is normal for her. Have any of you ever had your bird'test show low Albumin? 16. Glad to hear that he is on the mend.
17. They are all very cute. Elmo looks even smaller than Whisper. I looked around on the internet for rescues in my area but didn't seem to be any.
18. Thanks for the advice. It is true that she may not be interested in another bird but at least she would not be alone all day while I am at work. I hate leaving her by herself. The pet store has some macaws occasionally and they are really great but way too big for me. I have heard that they can chew the legs off your table if you turn you back for a moment. LOL Yeah the cockatoo is probably going to be too needy for me but she was sooo sweet. Practically begged me to take her home. The two male CAGs they had were very large and much darker than Whisper. They were also nippy. I was spoiled by Whisper because I fell in love with her at first sight and not sure if I could get another as sweet as she is. How many birds do you have anyway? LOL Oh and the pet store gets the birds from a breeder that I haven't seen also. It would just be nice to cut out the middle man and save some money. I paid $1200 for Whisper and even though she had been vet checked by a good avian vet I still took her to the vet immediately for a check up and that was another $250 with blood work. I just thought that if someone knew and could recommend a good breeder it would be nice. Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/01/13 03:34

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/01/13 03:35
19. I am thinking of getting a second bird. I think it would be nice for Whisper to have a buddy. I went by the pet store today that I bought whisper at last year. They have 2 BIG males that are 16 weeks. I was not real impressed with them. Whisper is female and kind of petite. I also am not sure if I want to go through a pet store this time either. I know that there is not guarantee that if I get another bird that they will like each other but Whisper is so sweet that I feel if I could find another sweet little female that they would get along. Any advice? I also don't know how to go about knowing if a breeder is good or not. I live in Central Kentucky. Does anyone know of any good ones in this area? I contacted some when I was looking the first time and I was not impressed. Even though I got Whisper at a pet store they are very reputable but expensive. They are the only store in the area that vet checks, tests and vaccinates their birds. What about a different breed of bird. They have a really sweet umbrella cockatoo and an Orange winged amazon.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/01/13 01:58
20. Whisper wouldn't talk in front of us when I first got her. We would sit in the other room and listen to her. But now she chatters away to me and I was very surprised that she talked at the vets office the other day.
21. Oh my gosh! I am crying my eyes out. I am so sad for your loss.
22. Mine does not like the floor either and I am glad. She is pretty good about staying on her cage or playstand. If she does fly off her playstand she will head straight for her cage and she knows exactly what room it is in.
