:-) Well I have to return the two cages I got and swop them for a bigger cage. Unfortunately the two cages dont come apart in a way that I could just make it one big cage. The things we do to keep our babies happy

Hi Tycos_mom Thanks, Im not sure of the difference between stripes and bars. Here are some better pictures http://shani.homedns.org/CrashandBurn.htm I'll try to get better shots of there tails.
-
Ok it didn't work out As soon as I would open up the cages Burn would jump into Crash's cage and hide there. When trying to return her to her own cage she'd flap away to his cage. They try to stay as close as possible to each other in there respective cages and Burn will actually try push her head into the corner of the roof trying to get out. So eventually I gave in, they are back in the original cage, they don't want to be together but they kick up more of a fuss when they are apart. So now I have two extra cages  very interesting exercise.

Nope, my two little ones don't talk at all. But they are still very young, 5 months. Maybe one day

Hi Kebbie, Welcome! Shame poor Floyd. Glad you took him in :-)
-
Wow that one looks lovely! Do they have any problems with the one being in a cage higher than the other? Thanks for the pic!

I will go have a look this weekend at the options for cages. They have a few cages with a divider but they are usually breeding cages and they don't look so great normally they are wooden with cage bars only in the front. I'll post a pic of the cage i get

Thanks for the advice :-) I think I will get a second cage not sure where i will put it tho. They started fighting again this morning which kinda helped my decision

Hi Everyone We added two baby tiel's to our flock awhile back both around 6 months old now. A whiteface pied and a cinnamon pied. The cinnamon, Crash is male and the whiteface, Burn, is female (they haven't been dna sexed so these are guesses) The problem is that I don't think they like each other very much. When I separate them, carrying them around the house, they call for one another. But they are very nippy towards each other when together. They don't seem to really hurt one another but they fight a lot and bite as soon as the other gets too close. They do get time everyday out of the cage, about 3-4 hours. So I've narrowed down a few options to what I think I should do: Get another cage so they have separate cages, I'll leave the cages next to each other so they have company. OR Buy a bigger cage (parrot size) so they have more room and don't get in each others faces so much. They currently are in a cage that is 80cm x 60cm x 90cm this is what the pet shop recommended OR Write a post here and leave them be because someone will tell me its perfectly normal for cockatiels to fight and I'm being paranoid. Thanks in Advance Andrea

hi, I might be wrong, but is your browser maybe not displaying incorrectly. Is it NBSP or the latter is html for a space. I'm just wondering cause I haven't seen it on anyones profile.

I really hope Echo gets better soon! This story made me so mad. I've had my share of dealing with horrible vets to! Glad you spoke your mind.

Shani also loves a sip of my rooibos tea, obviously only when its cooled. the only way i could get her to eat her pellets is to soak them in the tea first

Do people really sell eggs? Are any offers to sell eggs not scams? I've never heard of it before so im just interested?
-
I might be wrong cause I have read so many books about parrots over the past few months but I am almost sure I read it in Guide to a Well-Behaved Parrot by Mattie Sue Athen. don't quote me on that tho I could be wrong, I will go check at home later.

Well my boyfriend is going to the UK for two weeks and I will be alone with Shani. I'm a little nervous cause she so obviously dislikes me, but if our relationship improves in those two weeks we will know if kicking him out is the solution

Yeah I better pick up some boxes on the way home he's out of there. thanks Dan!

Hi Everyone Ive read a few posts about how Greys choose a favorite person... Well Shani chose my boyfriend. I have known for awhile and it hasn't really bothered me too much, I love her to bits anyway. I am the one that cleans the cage and perch and makes sure she eats properly and always has fresh water. I do all the research and she is a very happy bird, well she is happy when my boyfriend is around. The problem is that Shani refuses to Step up for me unless my boyfriend is in the room and any attempt to scratch her head, she lowers it to lure me in, results in a bite. She is perfectly cuddly towards him. I've tried bonding with her in a few ways, using advice I've found here and in the numerous parrot behavior books I've read, and nothing has helped. Is it possible that she will just never like me? Has anyone been in this situation?

Thanks LMG I looked at that link but they wont accept samples from South Africa without special permits. It seems like we are still behind in the world with our avian veterinarians here in South Africa, since posting this I found a company in SA that does DNA sexing to http://www.mdsafrica.net/site/default.asp They said they don't recommend sending a feather and prefer a drop of blood  not really sure how I would even attempt getting that right, or that I have the heart to prick her toe. I think I'm going to send them a feather anyways and see what they come up with and if they cant determine her sex from the feather then I will abandon my quest. It doesn't really make a difference anyways, still will love her just as much.

Oh and I put this in the Nursery forum cause she is still a baby about 7 months old...

Hi everyone I'm really interested to know if Shani is really a girl, I have no interest in breeding with her, just kinda want to know. I searched the forums and cant seem to find anything about surgical sexing (which my vet wants to do) vs DNA sexing. He says surgical sexing is easiest and cheapest, anyone know the procedure involved? is it 100% safe? have you had your bird surgically sexed? He says there is no real surgery involved just the sticking of a microscope up her bum  don't know about anyone else but this sounds like a horrible option to me, i was kinda concerned that he even offered it as an option. I'm leaning toward DNA sexing, seems like less/no stress for the bird. Was just interested to know if I'm being silly and its really not a big thing having your bird surgically sexed

Aww thats so cute  what's his/her name?

Shani's feathers are also a little raggedy, she has a steam bath every morning (sitting on the shower door) and I give her a bath every weekend in the winter. She is still a baby, I read that babies tend to make there feathers raggedy when they are young, while learning to preen properly and get around there cages. Does anyone know if this is true?
