1. Judy, I wish I was fast enough...but we go from poop stance to pooping in .2 seconds! I tried the other day and was left with a gift on the carpet! Which were cleaned today with my handy bissel while the critters hung out in the back bedroom.B)
2. I am about to!:silly: I am going to do a wooden base, square with wheels with a PCV center poll and from there I am going to adapt various natural and rope perches to fit into the PVC pipe. The center poll will be detachable for easy storage out of the way. I wish I had the room in my apartment for it to just stay out, but...what is a girl to do.
3. This is little miss Snowpea! She is showing off for you all This is at my friends chicken coop in her back yard, right here in downtown Atlanta! Yea..we have chickens here:blink:

Post edited by: Shamelessmuse, at: 2008/02/23 05:16
4. I want to remind people that despite if he is for real or not, we have to assume that he is. (Yea I said assume, so? ) Anyway, in my many years as a vet tech and as a trainer I have met many very smart people who didn't know the first thing about animal behavior and training. Many were perfectly normal people that thought these methods were perfectly okay. So....it is up to us to try an educate people or put forth the effort to do so. I'd rather make the attempt than get bogged down on if it is true or not...or even the debate of how horrible it may be. I'd rather focus on educating someone to either A. handle it correctly or B. place the critter in a reputable rescue.
5. I am so sorry, my heart goes out to you. I know this is such a sad time, but remember that your baby is waiting for you at the Rainbow bridge and you did so many wonderful things for him.
6. Wow, I don't know who this moron is in Vegas that is such a great trainer...but he is a moron. I've been training animals for over 12 years and that is not how it works. I hate to tell you that not only did you get some seriously bad advice! First off, if you do not have time to dedicate to your grey I would ask you to look at possibly placing it with a rescue group so that they can place the bird with someone who does. Additionally you need to understand that you do not have a common bird. You have an african grey and they are in fact, very intelligent and please don't even try to argue that point with me. I went to school for animal behavior, I've worked with animals for years and I've studied more about animals than you have ever even thought about. They ARE intelligent, as are many other creatures that you are under-estimating. You have a choice as to if you want to actually learn something or not. I can't force you of course. However, again - if you are not willing to learn about the animal you have, the training methods that work with it and commit to devoting time to the Grey, then you seriously need to contact a resuce (which if you give me your state I will be happy to give you some groups there). If you decided that you are going to take the time to dedicate to your grey, then first off you have to understand that the only way this bird is ever going to cooperate for you is if you build a bond based on trust and respect. Otherwise, you are going to have a fearful bird that will eventually reduce itself to feather plucking and lead a very unhappy life. You can not (despite what this so called trainer told you, who obviously is not familar with any successful training methods) use force to train your bird. If you are truly interested in learning some methods to help you with your bird, then I would suggest starting a new thread asking for help. And it would certainly help if you do not call the members hear childish or try to engage people in arguments. This group has a number of knowlageable and helpful people who know a great deal about the wonderful African Grey. I for one would be happy to help you learn the appropriate way to handle your bird if you are willing to learn.
7. Be very careful with Cinnamon, it can be a respritory irratant which I am sure effects our little Grey babies!
8. Too cute!! Greyce has learned to make my Chihuahua, Lily's "I'm stuck cry". It's the little whimper she makes when she gets stuck somewhere like on the chair and can't get down (she's very, very small). I was doing dishes the other day and heard the cry. Came in and Lily was sleeping...washing dishes and heard it again, only this time Lily and Dakota were sitting right there. I walked in and Greyce was making the "I'm stuck" cry! It's too funny how they manipulate us!
9. Greyce has no poop issues, other than anywhere is fair fame...she is one poopy bird! She does only go in two spots in her cage though. Makes it nice to know where I can put her toy box in the bottom. I hope that once we get a good bond I can potty train her so I don't have to have a towel all over me when I hold her;)
10. Ronda - you are killing with me with Casper's pictures!! My second dream bird is a Cockatoo...And you are getting a beautiful baby!!
11. ok, so you will have to excuse my grammer here! I am typing with one hand. greyce has taken over the other, she is now obsessed with mail:laugh: the only problen is, when she perches in one foot to hold the plain envelope, she graps so tight I can't feel my finger:P no matter, I am enjoying the simple fact I can hold her now:silly:

13. My parents do, my mom was so happy for me when the opprotunity came up to adopt Greyce she gave me money toward the cause. My friends already think I'm nuts with two dogs, a cat, two fish....there response was "Another animal?". However, while they don't get the fact that I am so thrilled to have her (I was bouncing off the walls when I got her). They do all ask about her when we talk, even my best friend who I talk to several times a week. And the two friends that have met her so far have thought she was beautiful, one is terrified of birds but wanted to hold her. So while they don't share my passion and none of them are bird people, most are happy for me.
14. Should I maybe compile a list for sticky somewhere?

16. Greyce is 19 months we believe. I have a almost 12 year old German Shepherd, Dakota, a 1.5 year old Chihuahua, Lily and a 3 year old Naughty kitty, Goblin. Oh and the fish, Sushi and Wasabi (Goblin ate Sushami on my birthday last year:blink: )
17. Thanks Judy, I have a database of rescue organizations as well as a local list of who takes and rehabs what wild animals. I used to have a pet care website and I still get a number of e-mails for it.
18. Yea, they live together and she won't seperate them. She doesn't feel like she has enough time with them to seperate them and she doesn't want them to get lonely. I keep telling her that if she is going to keep them together it might be a lost cause. She does typially handle them in the evening and Maya isn't as bad as Merlin. Thanks so much!!
19. Okay, bird training I get. However, we are having a devil of a time with my mom's two P'lets. She has two, Merlin the little boy, who was sold too young and I had to teach her how to hand feed, which was done and then weaned. Maya the little girl was a bit older. They are both very nippy, breaking sking nippy. Maya has gotten better, but Merlin is a little devil! She handles them every night, but Merlin is a handfull! He bites and won't let go until he is chewing on a chunk of flesh...then he goes for more. She can't do the push back technique as they are just too little and they end up biting harder for balance:blink:...doesn't matter if you ignore it...he just keeps on keeping on...Does anyone have any advice? Distractions don't work as well...
20. I buy a good deal of flash frozen stuff. I live alone, so going through the veggies fast enough when fresh is always hard and Greyce doesn't eat enough to count as a second person! I keep them on hand for when the stuff in the fridge goes bad
21. Awe!! I always miss my babies when I go on vacation. My mom always keep them, I call her just to check in and she e-mails me pictures of what fun they are having at Grandma's house!
22. I would have loved to have caught that! "Attack of the killer Grey!" (to the tune of attack of the killer tomatos of course).
23. I also wasn't saying anyone was better than another. While I may not agree with you, you have your opinion and you have made some very valid points! I would never take karma away from you for doing so. So I am giving you a Karma back Tari - I miss candles too!!
24. The one thing that worked quickly with Greyce was gently pushing toward her when she bit. Also, when walking toward her don't walk head on, try and walk up at an angle...always make sure you aren't looking her dead in the eye - face forward. Unless she is about to nail you, then a stern look and a stern "are you going to be a big girl", followed by a joyful "Good Bird!" when she diverts biting. Also, always try and catch her eye before she bites when you are holding her, this will often divert. Also the "are you going to be a good bird?" followed by "GOOD BIRD!" joyfully when she is diverted.
