Please please excuse my ignorance but i cannot understand how people are able to leave there bird out of the cage all day unless they are sitting watching him/she all day ? Can i just ask those people do they have to constantly stay in the room and watch there bird as im sure there are cables etc around that the bird can chew and maybe harm themself or other household hazzards ?Can those birds fly ?What happens when someone opens the front door ?Do those people have busy households ie kids, dinner, household chores ? if so it ammazes me how they can monitor the birds .Im just wondering how all this achieved as i have very busy lifestyle which only allows me to leave my bird out about 2 hours at night midweek and 2-3 hours out on the weekend days which is still sufficent enough as he gets loads of attention while still in the cage from family members .

From what i have been researching it is not addvisable to teach the bird whistling sound as the bird then accepts that as a way to speak to us humans and therefore repeats ?
-
well it looks like theres a strong percentage under 6 months not talking yet keep it up guys .
-
Roughly what percent of greys do eventualy talk ?

Hi guys i am well aware that not all greys will talk and it doesnt really matter to me if he does we still love him as he is a bit of a character.Just wondering if any of you can put a figure on actually how many do talk ? I think it might interest a few people as its generaly thought that they all talk by people that dont actual have one ?

Thanks for that number siobhain il just tell my vet to call her about any queries ,thanks again .
-
It sure is siobhan i think the avian vet is somewhere in wicklow according to a vet i called one time .I dont know wether to trust just any vet to be honest when all they prob do is search the web whereas we could do that at home ourself know what i mean .
-
Sorry guys a little of topic here but can you believe I live in the Republic Of Ireland and there is only one avian vet that deals with exotic birds such as parrots in the whole country with a population of over 5 million isnt that disgraceful .As i am lookin to get my bird checked out ,not that he has any problems i just want to see how he is coming along .

Post edited by: mervyn2233, at: 2007/11/09 13:42

I was thinking that he even does it after been out of the cage its a regular thing for last 3-4 weeks its just so annoying i mean he might scratch constantly for 20 mins at a time
-
At first i thought he was sharpening his nails or filing them but this is happening now about 3-4 weeks and up to now i am ignoring it and given no reaction but its getting unbareable now
-
hi guys just a quick question .My cag is regulary down in one corner of the cage scratching with one foot on a ledge of the cage its so annoying with the loud scratching sound i dont know why he is doin it. He cant possible be bored as i have 3 - 4 toys and 3 perches in the cage that are rotated and i leave him out as much as i can when im home .It puzzles me , any ideas why this behaviour occurs ?
-
my grey bites me from time to time only a little nip , but i have been given him a sturn "NO" and he seems to cop on to it thank god .But i will not allow him near the kids as i have 2 small kids who adore him and even try to rub him when hes out but i know from the birds reaction that he doesnt take to the kids very well as they can be noisy and the bird doesnt seem to like lots of noise when hes out of the cage ,hes fine inside the cage because he knows he is safe its his kingdom .
-
yes i think i might need to invest in a small cage on wheels or something like that so when we are out in kitchen eating our dinner he can come out to join us.
-
Thats good to know like i said when we can we leave him out of the cage as im the only one that will handle him he is dependent on me arriving home from work to leave him out .So like i said he gets in around 1.5 hours a day but he gets a lot of affection from the kids and my wife who are always talking to him through out the day plus i have 3 toys in the cage along with 3 perches that i move around for him and the cage is a good size for him to stretch .I assume id know from his behaviour if he wasnt getting out of the cage enough .
-
Hi guys i am just wondering if my cag is getting enough time out of the cage , My wife and i are very busy at the moment with work and family commitments more now then what we were when we bought our baby "lucky" .I do know that they need as much time out of the cage as possible but we are very limited at the moment im just afraid he is not getting enough ,he is on average out of the cage for 1.5 hours a day but gets lots of attention in the cage by kids or who ever is around so he seems quiet happy im just concerned hes not getting enough ,anyone any ideas ? mervyn

So it seems with the exception of a small percentage that we must live with the poo after all its a small price to pay for having a great friend and companion hopefully for the rest my life .
-
I am def not an expert but i would imagine it would cause no harm to poop alot as it cleans out there system just like humans ,unless its one extreme or the other i.e (runny or hard) but like i said i would only assume that .
-
Yes i think i will trial that for a while just trying to get him onto your hands and over to the cage in time is the difficult part .I will keep you posted on how i get on with ,id like to thank everyone for there opinion on this you have all been very helpfull again thank you , mervyn
-
I must try that , so how often would you ask him to go poop when he is out ?
-
Yes i have noticed our fella makes a wiggle for about 3-5 seconds right on the spot where he goes so he doesnt leave us very much time to pick him up and bring him to the cage .
-
God it sounds like your goin to have to invest in alot of the liath wipes ha ha .Its not a major concern we still love him like its just if it can be reduced if not avoided would be great
-
HA HA i am the exact same babywipes are beside me everytime i have lucky out of the cage ,like i said i really dont mind the on the spot ones but whenever i take my eye of him and he does it i must comb my living room to see if i missed any or the wife will give out ha .
-
Its like whenever he flies onto another surface he does a poop on it like as if he is marking his territory .I dont know if its normal but for every hour i have him out i must clean up poop about 3 times .I dont mind having to clean it straight away but if i miss him doin it somewhere my wife gets rather annoyed as you would imagine coming across it after few hours .

I feel a bit silly raising this topic but my african grey "lucky" is pooping all over the furniture in the living room when we have him out of the cage.Is there a way to train them to only poop in the cage or on a poop tray of some sort .Again i feel a bit silly asking but i do know greys have great learning abilities so i said why not ask the question so i am open to any suggestions ?Thanks again guys , mervyn
