Yes that is one thing i never knew after all the reading and research i have done on greys here and other places on the net ,not that it changes anything of course but it certainly is a strange one ,for such a very clever animal to be so shy around others ,shy is the word i was looking for earlier rather than nervous .
-
Ha ha that is so wierd lmao ,my father and friends say the same thing to me "robbed 1000 for a pigeon" ,wifes dad breeds pigeons and said he would have given me the same thing for nothing ha ha .Ye very strange he says nothing to anyone outside the immediate family ,i wonder is that just the age thing or do they ever grow out of it and become more mature .
-
yes your not to far of siobhan he was born the end of june so that makes him just over 9 months i think so still very young ,quick question are they generaly very nervous birds ? Anytime i have any visitors he goes really quiet and doesnt even open his beak just sits in the corner and says nothing and as soon as there goin he chats away back to himself again its amazing really is cant figure it out ,i am putting it down to maturity at the moment as he is so young i guess .

Ha ha your certainly correct there id say ,ah well we will just wait in anticipation for the explosion ha ha .

Hi all just wondering how long after would you normally expect your bird to blutter out another word other than his first ,my grey is saying hello really loud and clear now for bout 4-5 weeks now but no sign of anything else coming out yet .I am aware he/she may never say another word which isnt really that important to me but just wondering how long after all you guys birds first word did he/she say another ?

Hi everyone i now have a little more time on my hands to spend with my grey ,has anyone got any ideas on how to spend that with him ?We do not have a play pen or stand so when hes out he is in my living room but all he wants to do is sit on my chest and peck my mouth ha ha not aggresivly or anything just wants to be in my face all the time ,dont get me wrong but it gets a little uncomfortable at times so im open to suggestions ? I do try introduce him to my kids toys etc but he just flys off when i bring anything near him so i am trying to keep him occupied a little more .
-
Roughly what percent of greys do eventualy talk ?
mervyn2233 replied to mervyn2233's topic in The GREY Lounge
My grey started talking only recently and he/she is only 9 months so by the sounds of it he/she is ahead of schedule ha ha and starting to get louder with "hello" ,I have 2 chatter boxes kids so i didnt doubt for a min that he/she wouldnt talk lol -
He is bout 9 months now is all , hes been saying hello for last 2-3 weeks now and making an atempt to say lots of other things i think he will be a real chatter box like my two kids who are always talking to him ha ha .You can hear the hello ok but its very low at the moment, either way hes coming along lovely after a few small scares with him .Bit like bringing up a child they go through problems and emotional difficultys etc its amazing isnt it .
-
Hi everyone i just wanted to tell everyone lucky is now starting to talk the last couple of weeks he is saying hello very clearly but also very low im just wondering do they normally get louder after time ?
-
Hi guys i have a problem my grey is behavinf very strange recently ,she/he is bout 6 month old now and was coming along great mimicing etc and just really fun to be with .We bought a dog recently so the as you would expect needed a little more attention for while to settle in ok with us and no i certainly didnt ignore "lucky" (grey) but yes she/he did get less attention while i was dealing with molly the new dog but we are really trying to get lucky involved and give him more attention as possible but getting to the problem ,he is all day all night whistling the same one whistle over over and over again without breath 24hrs a day (really) and when he is eating he is eating like a vilture and making vulture noises ,this is goin on now over 3 weeks im trying everything with him to no avail the whistling continues .... and no mimicing nothing anymore i really dont know what to do as i love the bird and want him or her to feel the same ,like i said im giving all the attention i can possible give ,so if you have any ideas i would be greatfull , mervyn

Wil find out about that thank you , i did ask him will it do any harm to him even if he doesnt have anything wrong with him that maybe he might of just having an off day if you know what i mean but the vet said hell be fine either way he gave us baytril or something to that affect 0.1mg a day
-
Ha will do barbara was really nice my vet said she is a very inteligent women really knows her stuff like you said its a pitty she so far away ,hopefully hell get through it .
-
Thanks siobhan i did speak with vet omalley in wicklow and she addvised on what to do as he was really sick so time was against us really as she is 2.5 hours drive away from us and was closed in 1 hours time so we went to a vet that knows alot about birds ok yes not parrots but examined in as we tought he might have fell durin the night as when we woke he was limping badly and just not himself so he checked all his bones etc and as precaution gave anti-biotic as his feathers were puffed out and didnt whistle chirp or anything so was like a diff bird .As it turns out he is 50% better today after some anti biotic so he done saomthing right i assume ,But like you said we are stuck when we are in that situation with one in the whole country thanks for understanding
-
Hi guys i know theres prob a thread on this already but i brought my grey to local vet yesterday after he became ill ,just didnt move in cage and stayed very quiet we knew he wasnt himself so went to vet as a precautionary measure .Vet checked him over said it might be a virus so gave him anti-biotic for few days ,hes alot better today thank god but getting to the point he was weighed for the first time since we bought him he is now 5 and half months and weighs 450 grams the vet didnt really know if that weight was average so what you think guys ?
-
My bird lucky is so picky about his water ,even if there is a seed in it he will not drink out of it , i need to change it around 3-4 times daily so he drinks enough water daily .
-
I would imagine it would be fine as many people do that but there is one concern is if there are any household hazzards that may harm your baby in your abscence ie electric cables ,appliances , something that it may swallow you must consider all of the above and many more before deciding to leave your grey unattended to.
-
My centiments exactly dan , now not for one minute am i suggesting that anyone on this forum are leaving them in such a case , but it seems strange to me that so many people can leave there parrot out of the cage all day long everyday and stay with him/she for the entire time ?And keep the bird out of harms way ?I know when i even have to go to the toilet or answer the front door i put him at least back ontop of his cage if not into it . I will get people with different opinions about this but my belief is when a bird comes into the world and is hand reared and kept in a cage etc that is all that it knows is living in a cage ,yes time out of the cage is very important i do know that more for brain stimulisation and boredom than anything else in my opinion ,so there wouldnt be a need to leave the bird out of the cage for long periods ,ok it doesnt do any harm other than the household hazzard but basicly what i am saying is that few hours a day to keep the boredom at bay should be enough again thats my opinion but who am i only a bird owner.

Post edited by: mervyn2233, at: 2007/11/17 16:09
