I would have to say that it's probably not a good idea. You never want to get another bird for your current bird because there is a good chance that they may never get along. Plus, if you get another bird that needs attention you will be cutting into the time you would have spent with the first bird. If your grey seems bored then set up a fish tank or get a big flight cage with a set of finches for him to watch. My grey loves to watch my finches and fish while she is in her cage.

We have two Oaks and a Chocolate Guava in the front yard (two of which are by my room) and they were infested with ants. Well, the day before Fay hit my dad trimmed them away from the house and stirred them up. So between the trimming and the hurricane the ants started pouring into the house!!! It was horrible, they were coming into my room big time because the outside walls of my room are right by two of the trees. I went trough and put down baby powder along the borders of my room and thought they were gone but then they started coming in through the attic. I guess they were really bad in my dads bathroom and in the laundry room too so my dad got sick of it and called an exterminator. I was not happy about it so I started making plans for what to do with the birds. They guy came over to check out what all needed to be done and to give an estimate. He and my dad went room to room and when he walked into my room he was like "Woo, you got birds..." He started going over "bird safty" with my dad telling him that you can't spray anything around birds (my dad din't believe me) and that they would work around it. I told the guy I was going to move the finches to the back lanai and he said that would be a bad idea because their would be a LOT of spraying back there and that they would be safer in my room. He told me that the spray they use is less toxic than the stuff the other companies use and that as long as they were in my room with the A/C on they would be fine. He seemed very knowledgeable about avian safty so when he set us up to have the house sprayed that day and I decided that I would leave the finches in my room and take Elmo to work with me. Elmo had a good time in the car (as always) but as soon as we pulled up behind the store he knew where we were and I could tell he was not thrilled. I tried to put him into a couple cages in a less hectic part of the department but he wanted no part of them so I let him stay in his harness so he could sit on me while I cleaned the glass on all our Lory pens till he seemed to relax. I then put him in the young macaw cage near the back room door and the baby birds so he could keep an eye on me. He went into that cage okay but was not happy when I shut the cage and padlocked the door. He was passing back and forth upside-down from the top of the cage for a good 30 minutes and then just clung to the side for the rest of the evening...only moving to the front of the cage when I would walk up, or moved back to the top when a customer would come up to him. The whole day I was just thinking that he was going to start plucking because he was so stressed, I had never seen him so unhappy, but I knew it was for his own good. At the end of the night I went to get him out and he was SO excited he lunged to get to me and did not put up ANY protest to get back into his harness. He was so happy on the ride home, and when my b/f Paul got there I had Elmo go to him and boy was he happy to be with the both of us back in his room! The next day he wanted nothing else but to be with me and I can't even begin to tell you how many times he gurged for me. I now know that I brought her up right and that she can handle anything. I am so proud of her. By the way, all the finches are fine and there was no smell in the house at all.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/09/04 06:26

CONGRATS on the new (5 year-old) baby! I'm sure with the 3 parrots your MBS will go into remission!

It sounds like he had a good time with you. Sorry about the flu though...I've got a REALLY bad cold right now. As for uploading the video you can upload it to Youtube or Photobucket and then just post a link. I'd love to see it.B)

Poor baby...I bet she is miserable. You could try this stuff from Kaytee called Molt Ease. It's made of Aloe but it also has preen oils and shark liver oil. I've never used it but I would consider using it if I was in your shoes. It's worth a shot.

What a cutie! I love the B&G's and down the line I may end up getting one. This is the B&G I want...his name is Ethel and is the biggest B&G I have ever seen. He's 8 years old and I can't get any work done without him dancing and blowing up his crop to get my attention.

I have not chipped Elmo but if they come out with the GPS chip I'll do it in a heartbeat.

If lily is still falling I would put the grate back in and put a folded beach towl at the bottom to cushen the fall. Also, use natural perches that are ruff, not the smooth dowels. For the bottom of my cages I use astro-turf. I put it on top of the grate for the finches and under the grate for Elmo. I would use Newspaper for Elmo's cage but I don't get the paper other than the occational Sunday paper.
-
Yes, add Red Palm Oil and Aloe baths...they can only help.
-
If the pictures are real the the bird has a overload of Keratin causing the Red factor. Red can always molt out to grey so it's really not something to invest money in.
-
I agree with Judy, keep the perches lower till he is a bit more secure with his footing and toss the rusting cage.

I made the mistake of leaving the room with a brand new paper towel roll on the bed and Elmo on the treestand. I come back 10 minutes later and the bed was COVERED with bits of paper and half the rool was shreaded.

You guys are lucky to never have nightmares about your greys. I had nightmares all the time when I was hand-feeding him and quite a few now that he is older. I have nightmares all the time about many thing, but I'm a worry wort by nature so the nightmares are probably a manifestation of my anxieties.

I say leave it off. Collars should only be used, IMO, if the plucking has escalated to mutilation. When collars are put on dogs they are used for just a few days at a time, with parrots they need to be used for months and months. I've done a lot of reading on them and they don't seem to ever really "cure" plucking, just stop it while it's on. I do know an Eckie that had to wear one for a while because he broke his keel and there was a gash on his chest that had to be stiched up. He would not let the gash heal and was getting infection after infection from him picking at the wound. After the collar was put on his chest healed and the infections cleared and he is now good as new, but as far as just a plucker I say if they are happy and healthy in every other way then let them be a nudist. B)

If he doesn't seem to like it then I wouldn't cover him. I don't cover Elmo's cage at night and I will have the TV on till late, but she seems to be able to sleep with the noise.

Hey.Single African grey free to any good home

There are many, many, many free birds out there but you need to be very careful and only deal with people that are local. I myself had to find a new home for my Sun Conure a few years back. I placed an ad on Craigslist and I got tons on e-mails from people that wanted him. I found a wonderful woman that had quakers and ringnecks that wanted to get my little Otto for her husband. I went out to their home and saw that all their animals were well cared for gave them Otto...free of charge. She offered to pay me what I had paid for him but I told her use that money for a vet check of tons of toys and food for him. So basicly if someone has a bird they want to give away, if they seem more into you paying to ship it or any other dollar amount move on...it's a scam. -
OHHHHHHHHH yeah, many bad dreams about things happening to Elmo. The worst and most recent was really bad. I was riding a bike with Elmo in his harness riding on my shoulder. I'm going at a good pace when all of a sudden Elmo gets spooked and tries to fly away. The harness keeps her from getting away but flings her to the back and she gets caught up in the back wheel. I can't stop and she goes into the spokes and is killed. In the dream I am screaming for someone to help but no one does as I try to get Elmo's body out of the wheel...that's when I woke up in tears. That dream felt to real that I have vowed to NEVER take Elmo on or near a bike...EVER!!!

Heather - This is a major scam opperation, esp. for overseas people. The relay service covers the accent and gives a GREAT way to get people to give them the benefit of the doubt, being deaf and all. Anytime a "shipper" and western union is mentioned it is a scam...no ifs ands or buts. They send you a check well over what you are selling your goods for and then tell you to W.U the money to the third party. What they want is for you to send the money before the check clears because the check is a fake so by the time your bank knows the check is fake you have sent off the money and you are left with ether a nice chunk out of your account or you owe the money to the bank. -
Hahaha, I'm the butt of the jokes of this thread (or should I say nose) but I like to dish it out when I can too. I don't blam you one bit for jumping on this one cause if it was someone else saying what I said I would have been ALL OVER it too.   There is nothing worse than some of the things she has learned from me, and everyone knows where she got them from. :pinch:

It's good to know that Elmo is not the only grey that must have 666 under their feathers. Hahahaha! Everyone says I should have named her Omen or Damion because of some of the stuff she does...and always after they hear about the chewed off duck faces!

Hahaha Dan, I'm sure you'll love these.   What's the difference between Big Foot and an intelligent man?
