I think something is up with your vet. I'm the official "vet runner" for the store and I have taken a number of birds in. The most resent was a CAG baby that just didn't seem right from the start and we all thought he had an infection. The Doc the poo and swabbed the crop...he was clean or gram neg bacteria but he did have a yeast infection. I think only 2 other birds have had a bad gram stain that I have seen...everyone else have gotten clean bills of health. If I was you I would start asking around for another vet because it seems if ALL the birds are being treated for infections something isn't right.

Sounds normal to me. I will go around with a spray bottle at work and spray the birds. I turn my back for 2 seconds and they all go in the bowls. They get into bathing mindsets and just can't stop!  :silly:

Would you like to take care of birds for a living?

I'll meet you their Tracy! That would be a really cool job, but being almost an hour away from town...that's a little too far off the beaten path for this girl. What if their was an emergency or something...thats a little far from a hospital. -
I have a really cool vet too, he's helped me with my finches over the phone and has had my e-mail him pictures so he can see what i'm talking about. One of my female Star finches was losing the color in her beak and everyone I discribed it to said "scaly-face mites" but I knew it wasn't that. When I asked my vet he said to send him pics and he e-mailed me back the next day and said it looked like it could be a vitamin A deficiency and to try to treat for that first before anything else and sure enough not long after I started using Nekon in their water he beak went back to normal. As for the red factor...some birds have it only as a baby, others can be 15 before a red feather pops up.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/09/07 07:06

Thank you so much Dan for sharing that video. I totally agree with Erika, older birds get a bad wrap, but with the right care they are one of the most rewarding things in life. A big THANK YOU to everyone that takes in an unwanted bird, and one day I hope to do the same.

Gloat all you want...that is something to be proud of. {Feel-good-00020114}

Elmo has one feather on the back of her neck with a red (really more pink) dot on it too. Her feather is a "baby" feather that hasn't molted out yet. She also has dark red on the bottom half of all her flight feathers. As far as I can tell it's red factor, not a deficiency.

Your baby is adorable!!! There is nothing cuter than a baby congo at a few weeks old. I love the names you picked out for him/her:P. Let us know when you find out what sex it is.

Ahhh so the Greys aren't too keen on the idea of a B&G in the house. Well, take it slow and I'm sure the boys will relax a bit. And yes, he wants a "date" with me! :silly:

It sounds like he discovered a new noise and thinks it's fun to do. My CAG Elmo will do the same thing...when he is in his cage or in the bathroom she talks non-stop, but if she is with me or on her stand she will do the phone ring, cell phone tone, or some other new noise she has learned that she thinks is fun to do. It sounds to me that your grey your grey just discovered how fun that noise it to do, so what you need to do is not pay any attention to it. He will get tired of doing it and will move on to a new noise. If you try to get him to stop by telling him to stop of showing him any attention he will learn that the smoke alarm sound is the noise to make to get your attention.

Hahaha, I love the way Dave explains things. He's like Bill Nye but crud!

Yeah, the only reason they sprayed inside was because the ants were all over. He said that they would only need to spray inside once or maybe twice and then it would all be outside spraying. Nothing is getting in if they are all dead outside.   I think Elmo disagrees with the name of the store...it's not Pet Kingdom, it's Pet Hell!!!

LOL!!! It's Dan's turn for a good ripping! MUHAHAHAHA I had seen this on the news and was wondering what came of it. What did the thing in the box turn out to be? BTW Tracy...Harry & the Hendersons was one of my FAV movies when I was a kid!!!
-
I like the name Peanut too...very cute! How is the addition...everyone doing OK? Ethel was raised at the store and was sold to a lady that named him Ethel...wanting a "female" bird. When Ethel became sexually mature she just couldn't handle him anymore and gave him back to the store. He never had a DNA test done but his Pelvic bones are so tight an egg would never get through and he doen't act like a sexual mature female...he acts like a male trying to get a date! One of these days I'm going to pay for the DNA myself to find out once and for all what Ethel is.

I'm sure she will be back to normal soon. It sounds like the worst is over. Letting you "preen" her is a good sign.

Yeah, I'm very pleased. I didn't see the guy that sprayed...different guy that came in the morning...but from what my stepmom said one of the first things out of his mouth was he would NOT sray near the birds. Plus the first guy said that the tech that would come out had a lot of Avian experiance.

LOL!!!! That is funny!!! Elmo does the same thing when she goes to bite the laptop cord....she leans in to bite is and goes "EHHHH Don't you do it!" They know it's wrong but they just can't stop themselves!!!!

I'm sure this is a BIG load off your back...glad to hear the new old cage is a hit!

I aggree with Dave on this one. I have seen so many birds with damaged toes...ether from the parrent birds, birth defect, cages too close to other birds....and not one is bothered by it. I would be more worried about cliping into the quick every week than one surgery. Like Dave said, ask your vet what the dangers are, what the worst case would be, and what his expectation are with your bird are.
-
Hahaha, oh man! I;m sure you were freakin', but it is pretty funny! If I was you I would get some super glue and glue bells all over the tires! Hahahaha (only on the tires though;) )
-
Yeah, I was worried about the finches, but there is 14 of them and moving them...esp the Gouldians, could have done more harm than good. The company was Hulett that came out and I've been telling everyone how great they were with the birds and that they did what they said they would...get rid of the ants! I could never have asked for a better bird than Elmo, she keeps me on my toes and always seems to amaze me with what she can do, handle, and understand. But thats a Grey for ya'.

Oh god, that is really sad. She did wonderful things for abused animals and people like her are hard to come by. I'm sure she was welcomed with open arms/wings on the other side...there is for sure a special place for people like her. Her family and flock will be in my thoughts.

Sounds like all went well and Tobie made it through ok. The pic of the sea turtle is beautiful!
-
Do you know when/if those are coming out. I've heard people talk about them but nothing about when they will be available.
-
I know, I would NEVER forgive myself is something happend to her. If they need to spray inside again in the future then I'm going to take her to Pauls house for the day...I think she would have a ball over there.
