Hi all Wanted to know if there are any practicing artists with an African Grey on this Forum.. I was curious as to what safety precautions you take as an artist residing in a live/work space with your grey. (I am an oil painter) Thanks
  3. cool thanks! checked out pricing... not bad at all 30$ for 4
  4. i like the plug-in idea. maybe i'll try that! thanks jillybeanz. the human trap could work for the occasional mouse, but if there are families of them i feel like it would become a full time job emptying it lol. and i know that mice are really good at finding their way back too just like the sound deterrent though, i know mice can sense the presence of a cat because of the smell it gives off, and will therefore stay away from that home because of it. my roommate had a cat (but he just moved out) that lived here last year, after we couldnt take the mice situation anymore, and within days the cat had killed maybe 3 mice, but all the other ones decided not to come back i'm sure by winter though, the mice will return after the cat's smell has diminished and its too cold to live outdoors. anyway tho, i'm gonna check out the sound plug-in i wonder how much electricity it takes to fuel it.. prob wont make a difference in my bill thanks!<br><br>Post edited by: razza45, at: 2009/08/06 04:28
  5. i just hate traps and all that garbage. especially the sticky traps which are the only ones that seem to work. I wonder if there is such thing as a cat-odar dispenser that keeps mice away lol.. like something that just emits the smell
  6. danmcq, silvester is exactly what came to my mind when i first thought of this, ha thanks guys, i appreciate the input. i'm always running around the house while i have rox out so leaving the two alone was definitely one of my concerns.. i just figure that mice are also a health hazard for birds (getting into their drop trays and such), so i'm not sure which one is a greater risk... free roaming mice or cat<br><br>Post edited by: razza45, at: 2009/08/05 21:07
  7. Hi all, my apartment is infamous for hosting families of mice. I was wondering how dangerous it is to introduce a cat into the apartment with my bird here (I've heard that cat saliva is deadly to birds). Are there any safety tips that you can recommend for making this transition smooth? or do you not recommend a cat at all? Thanks Nikki
  8. Sophie don't let me discourage you though, after all that lol I was just worried about the grungy city.. but it seems like your school's in upstate ny? I bet if you asked your land lord ahead of time it would be no problem. And if you find the right roommates who are respectful enough it wouldn't be an issue. The only tricky parts are other pets/ parties and maybe the amount of time school takes up
  9. Everything is good with Roxy. I chickened out though... she is still at home with my mom... A couple of weeks after I had seriously considered bringing rox to my apartment, we had to do something about the mice problem. My roommate got a cat and so I became hesitant about the idea. Especially because the cat was adopted and had been living on the street for the first couple months of his life (so his wild instincts were much more prevalent). It turned out that I had made the right decision though; soon after the cat had just gotten acclimated we got a HUGE flea problem.. since we didn't put any front line on him. It took 2 pest control treatments to get rid of them which are extremely toxic. I just think that roxy is too sensitive and too precious to me to take any kind of risk. The apartments are old and dirty and filled with mice around boston so its just not worth it..
  10. i know, right?? such hypersensitive creatures

  12. hah ok... never mind figured it out. Received two macaw stuffed animals for xmas...they were on a bookshelf behind her cage placed higher than her. Being the only bird in my house i'm sure they were posing a major threat too funny. oh well tho..so much for an expansive topic
  13. hi all, quick inquiry regarding behavior.. Recently (starting a few days ago) Roxy my TAG has been hanging out at the bottom left of her cage. At first there was a toy down on the grate of her cage so I figured that was the reason (since she was playing with it while she was down there), however, after I cleaned her cage and tidied her toys, she still chooses to hang out down there... She doesn't normally do this so I've just been a little concerned. Shes eating well, talking up a storm and her droppings are fine, but still this behavior seems a bit odd. Any input or related stories would be great Thanks, Nikki

  15. hi everyone, it's been a while. just a quick question... I am aware that it is common for a TAG/CAG's beak to chip, but do you know of any remedies/ foods to keep a birds beak as healthy and strong as possible? also, i've heard that UV full-spectrum lights do wonders...would that help in the beak department?
  16. in reference to BMustee's post "I have also heard the same thing, but it's not 63% of all...from what I read the MALE will want to switch people, females not nearly as much." good call. it is said that around "63% of males and 13% females change companions after maturity"<br><br>Post edited by: razza45, at: 2007/11/15 20:28
  17. ): joe i'm sorry to hear that. letting the neighbors know and posting some fliers could help, possibly/hopefully.. good luck tho.
  18. great, well my mind has been put to rest lol thank youu
  19. yea i'm sure the proper social upbringing is key..and also i bet over nurturing has a lot to do with the animal wanting to gain independence. um as far as gender is concerned...do you recommend a male owner adopt a male or female? is there any difference when it comes to bonding? are females more likely to take to a male owner?
  20. parent bond meaning caregiver/parent and flock bond meaning friend i will relay the message the internet can supply harsh and misleading opinions which can scare anyone who researches enough.. plus new bird owners are more susceptible and sensitive to such information...i think this was the case mr spock, once again, thanks for your advice...i agree with you 100%...i know roxy has gone through many phases for sure...i just think it will be more comforting for him to see another argument beside my own. by the way i'm keeping my fingers crossed that roxy and dante will get along! i've heard that it is usually successful when introducing a baby to an older bird of the same species (plus they are opposite sex)...they are more accepting. we will with out a doubt introduce them slloowwwllyyy but i'm keepin my fingers crossed! who knows maybe i'll be posing some pictures of them sittin side by side (:
  21. i have read a few posts on here about this issue...but i was just wondering if anyone had any contrary/comforting advice/information to give about it: A friend of mine has recently adopted a baby congo, now named Dante... the congo is too young to go home tho because he is still being hand fed...he should be able to take Dante home within a few weeks. However, my friend has run across a concern while researching, before taking Dante home...it is said that when congo's reach maturity 63% of them want to "leave the nest" so to speak and change bond to another human companion...he is worried that Dante will defect from him after putting so much work into raising him. Has anyone found that their congo has changed companions during the course of maturation (excluding long term absence in the birds life)?? I guess the theory behind this is that congos mature slower than say a timneh who is ready for independence by the age of 6 months. Congos on the other hand take up to a year..therefore it is wise for a breeder to keep the congo longer so that when the congo goes home it is ready to make their flock bond instead of another parent bond which it will soon leave..
  22. http://www.greyforums.net/component/option,com_joomlaboard/Itemid,27/func,view/catid,5/id,23317/ i guess i should have looked around first. connie what a gold mine (:
  23. this is such a great site!! thank you..exactly what i was looking for
  24. well, i've come to the conclusion that roxy is bored with the average. she doesn't find interest in her toys anymore. i buy her them from the local pet store at around 20 bucks a pop and for her not to like them gets to be a little pricey. so now i'm thinking she needs some new, creative toys to stimulate those neurons. i'm at art school...so i have supplies galore at my finger tips and was wondering, besides the obvious (wood, leather, and that white chalky rawhide), what some objects/material would make for an interesting/ fun/ interactive toy. hopefully you guys can help me out with some obscure stuff...example: toilet paper rolls!! i'll add, also, as i rack my brain
