1. honnedo i have spoke to Mrspock ( thanks Dave ) & it may be possible that it could also be an ear infection, please give your vet a complete run down/ history of the events that led to this happening to your grey.My fingers are crossed that you can get her sorted ASAP.
2. It it like bringing a human baby home & you will follow your instinct on what is right for your grey, everyone is different just go with what feels right for you.Good luck

Uh-oh

Radar please do not feed milk to your grey as they are lactose intolerant, they are unable to digest it & avoid the onions, onions have been linked to kidney & blood cell problems in parrots .
4. Well fingers crossed it's not seizures, it may well have been a stoke as this could effect her balance & her kind of paralysis with her neck that you are describing. As i said she really needs vet treatment, if you cant get her to one untill monday please just follow the advice in my previous post, keep her warm & maintain her nutrition if she is not eating well. I'm sorry i cant offer anymore advice, my thoughts are with you, please let me know what happens.
5. Hi heres the link for you to read http://www.greyforums.net/forums/african-grey/35029-when-can-i-handle-her.html Good luck with your new baby, please post some pictures for us, We have a welcome room wht not come & introduce yourself in there
6. Panting heavily after any activity beccy would indicate an overweight bird, or really fat birds dont perch right, their legs kind of spread out as if their legs cant carry there weight ! I'm sure that doesnt apply to brian If his weight fluctuates up & down after monitoring him then maybe a visit to the vets just to settle your mind.
7. Lovely looking grey Time & patience & you will win him around, he needs time to gain your trust. keep trying with the fruit etc.. try eating in front of him, greys usually want what we are having Grapes are usually a big hit , just chop a bowel of mixed fruit up for him & let him investigate it.
8. honnedo i am sorry that you are not geting a response from the vets, can you not tell them that this is urgent ? monday is a long way off. The only advice i can offer is to keep her warm, if she is on the floor of the cage put a towel under her for comfort so she is not sitting on a cold floor.Keep the noise down & avoid any stress for her.If she stops eating or is not eating sufficiently You may have to feed baby food or soft foods with an eye dropper or a small spoon with sides bent inwards. Here is a bit of information about seizures, Does any of this apply to your bird ? Seizures usually indicate a serious problem and often require immediate attention. The two most common causes of seizures are lead poisoning and calcium deficiency. The bird usually falls off its perch and flaps uncontrollably around the bottom of the cage (while screaming.) General causes of seizures include: 1. Diet low in calcium and vitamins B and D. 2. Toxins such as plants, lead, alcohol, chocolate. 3. Diseases - viral, fungal, bacterial parasitic, and brain tumours. 4. Severe injury to the head. 5. Hypoglycaemia - low blood sugar from diseases or failure to eat for several days. When a bird is having a seizure, protect the bird from injury by removing perches, toys and dishes from the cage. You may consider placing the bird in a smooth-sided box. If the seizure lasts more than 2 or 3 minutes, seek immediate veterinary care. A sugar water solution made by mixing 1 teaspoonful of honey or sugar in 8 ounces of water and giving small amounts with an eye dropper may provide some temporary help.
9. I agree with Dan beccy just keep an eye on his weight. One of my greys Alfie varies but is usually around the same weight as Brian, he is just a big boy, bigger than his brother & my female, i have seen his mum & she is a big grey, maybe brian is taking after one of his parents.
10. You do need to get your grey to a vet, if your avian vet is away then any vet is better than none. This does not sound to good i'm afraid & your grey needs medical treatment to determine what is causing this.If your grey is loosing balance & is struggling to keep her neck straight it maybe neurological / seizures. Please seek veterinary help ASAP
11. I would love to give up work tomorrow, i hope in the near future i can & spend my time with my greys & commit to more rescue greys
12. loviechick I totally agree with you,in my opinion also i think the whole bonding with the opposite sex is a myth, if your grey is well socialized from an early age he/ she will have equal experience with both sexes.I do believe it's just a case of who the bird prefers, i have a female who regurtitates & acts as if i'm her partner.
13. Thats funny beccy
14. Lovely pictures, i love Talon trying to get in the water dish Thanks for posting them Melissa, you have been busy:)

19. Hi Tee & Welcome, we have a welcome room, im sure one of Admin team will be able to move you introduction there Nice to have you here.
20. Hi & Welcome, please come & introduce yourself in our welcome room. You dont say how old Bella is ? Is she a baby ? if so she may be useing her beak to test ,feel,If it is an actual bite, dont react as hard as it is.Just say a firm No & return Bella to her stand or walk away for a few minutes, if you show a reaction she is getting the attention from you, so no response will teach her that biting gets her nothing. If Bella is higher on top of her cage than your girlfriend then yes this can lead to a dominance battle, she will see herself as leader of the flock, which she is not to be, you have to show her that you & your girlfriend are higher in the pecking order than she is, this will help her in the future if she knows where her position in the flock is. You both need to interact with Bella, i would take a step back & let your girlfriend do all the good bits, getting her from her cage, giving treats etc..If a bird decides to bond with one family member there is not an awful lot you can do, but socialize her well with lots of people if you can.

Post edited by: lovemyGreys, at: 2007/09/27 20:46

22. Hi Jacqui, if he is eating a seed diet with fruit you really need to introduce some veggies in there as well. Dark leafy greened vegetables have a high calcium level and should be offered alongside a pelleted/ seed based diet.Foods included in this group are.. Beet Greens Broccoli Leaves Broccoli Stem Cabbage (outside green leaves) Celery Chard Chinese Cabbage Collards (cooked) Dandelion Greens Endive Kale Kohlrabi Lettuce Dark Green Leaf Mustard Greens If he will eat any of the above Jacqui you wont need to feed a calcium supplement & if he eats a variety of fruit alongside the veggies every day then he should get all the vitamins he needs.
