1. Oh they definitely sound like R2D2 all right! Here is a link of Makena's silly little noises that was posted on here awhile ago. He was about 3 1/2 months old here... http://www.greyforums.net/videos/MVI_3127.mov
2. Thanks a lot Mr. Spock for giving it away... Now I really have some explaining to do... It's going to be a long night in our household...
3. Yes you are right Dan, Mom and Dad got most of it We usually just give him a slice or cut up pieces and he is rarely interested. This time for the heck of it I just gave him the outer flesh and skin and he went nuts! He sat up there for over an hour tearing into the thing, and of course flinging it all over the place! You should try in Penny, papayas are actually extremely good for you and the bird. They are high in vitamin C, vitamin A and folate. They also contain papain, which is an enzyme that helps aid in digestion. Our vet recommended papaya when Makena was having problems with the worms. Also every part of the papaya is eatable including the seeds. Although I find the seeds and skin to be a little bitter but Makena doesn't seem to mind B). Give them a try, they are delicious!!
4. We had to take Makena on a plane to get him here, but the airline we went on allowed us to bring him in the cabin. And it was only about a 30 minute flight. He was fine, he just slept. Have you checked to make sure there aren't any airlines that will allow you to bring him in the cabin? Many companies ship there birds on airlines and don't have any problems. I am sure many people on here can give there experiences having a bird shipped to them. It happens all the time and I am sure your grey will be fine
5. Great post LMG!! It seems there is a definite distinction between "bird people" and "non-bird people". There really isn't much in between. We were told by SO MANY friends and family members that we are nuts and not to get a parrot. The funny thing is, once people meet Makena they fall in love with him too! I have always been so intrigued by birds, especially greys. They are mysterious and fascinating and unlike any other creature. You have to really work for their love and affection, unlike many other pets. You have to understand them, know their signs and treat them as an equal. The bottom line is... people can say we are nuts all they want. My grey is like a child to me and I can't imagine my life without him! This forum is so special... to have a place to come and chat all the time about our birds is soooo comforting! I love all you guys!!! Lots of hugs!!! {Love-0002011E}

Post edited by: Makena, at: 2007/09/23 07:50

8. Makena's hatch date was May 8, 2007 We brought him home July 24th Hey Ice, Roxy and I have the same birthday!!
9. Hi Hunny! Glad you finally decided to join! {Love-0002012D} Now you are going to know everyone I am always talking about! You will love them as much as I do!
10. LOL Beccy, I think you are entitled to an "adult" drink every once in a while !! Although I would be running into the kitchen and getting him his own glass too :silly:! My guilty moments are when I have to leave the house... I just see him in his cage looking at me with that "don't leave me" look! I feel so bad, I just want to spend every second with him!!
11. I agree with BMustee and dblhelix, we have 2 cement perches in Makena's cage which keep his nails perfect. We don't really see a need to ever trim him. Sounds like they went WAY too far with Max's nails. Definitely lower all the perches and maybe stick some padding in his cage. His nails will grow back, just keep him safe in the mean time!
12. Makena is 18 weeks old and still not fully weaned. He is still asking to be handfed 1-2 times a day. He is eating more and more regular foods though, so I suspect it is only a matter of days. I guess every bird has their own time!
13. Aloha, I see you are in Hawaii. We recently purchased our CAG from a breeder on Oahu (we live on Maui) and while we absolutely love and adore the little guy, he came with many problems. We brought him in for his first wellness check and found out he had bird lice. Apparently it is VERY uncommon on the mainland, but here in Hawaii it is prevalent. We got the lice under control only to notice he was having a hard time keeping food down. We rushed him into the vet again and found out he had roundworms. The vet attributed both of these problems with being around other birds. Many hundreds of dollars in vet bills later he is now happy and healthy! We contacted the breeder and let him know about all of the problems and he was less than helpful. Basically we were ignored. And on top of it, we were told he was almost completely weaned, only to find out he was nowhere close!! We have had him almost 2 months now and he is still on 1-2 handfeedings a day. We did NOT want to have to handfeed a bird as it is dangerous... but we didn't have a choice in the matter! So there is my story... The only reason I am telling you this is to BE CAREFUL! Make sure the bird you buy comes with some kind of guarantee. A lot of times you have a couple of days within buying the bird to take them to the vet. Take him to the vet immediately!! Tell the vet you want them to analyze a feather and poop sample under the microscope. Also do a gram stain. Make sure the breeder will work with you and be available to you after you get the bird. Our breeder wouldn't return our calls or emails after the fact! You are doing the right thing by coming on here and asking these questions! I wish you luck... and don't hesitate to PM me if you want more information. I have learned a lot over the past few months! Welcome to the forums!!
14. Way to recruit Joe! {Characters-00020067} Come on in the water's fine!!!
15. {Feel-good-0002006E} I think it is only proper that the raven get a name!!
16. LOL :silly: :silly: :silly:!! I am sitting here trying to imagine this black raven... I really think we need a pic!! I can also imagine your poor son ducking when he hears this maniacal creature coming at him. I guess I have something to "look forward" too!!
17. AWWW!!! Love him!! What a happy mommy you must be! Congrats!!
18. I like your prediction Judy! Thank you guys so much for your expert advise! I know some weight loss is normal, it is just nice to have a second opinion . We will keep monitoring him closely and watch for any big drops! Thanks again guys!!
19. Makena is down to 2 hand feedings a day as of about a week ago. He usually takes about 45-50ml of formula in the morning and at night. We give him pellets (which he loves) and tons of fruits and veggies during the day. He has a very healthy appetite and seems to be constantly munching on something. We monitor his weight VERY closely and are noticing he is loosing some weight. He was hovering between 430-450g, but has since dropped to about 415g. He is very active.... loves flapping his wings and playing with toys. If he makes his way to the floor, he runs all over the place! I guess my question is... is this weight loss normal, and should we expect more? We just want to be prepared... I think Mak is a little sick of the vet!! Thanks guys, Aloha!

Lying on back

Thank you so much for sharing your story Zandische, I am glad to know I am not the only one with a crazy upside down grey !! I just snapped this pic a few minutes ago... He wanted to come out, so he laid upside down across his water dish and perch. It is usually hard to get a pic because the minute I walk over there he usually jumps up and runs to the door! He is such a smart bird, he knows the minute he does that, I run over and open the door... I guess you could say he has me wrapped around his little talon!
21. Awesome Tracy!!! Here is another good one...
22. Good Morning All!!! It is 10:00am and another sunny day here in Maui!
23. Great looking stand!!! I may just need to head to Home Depot myself!!!
