1. After many trials we found out Makena's favorite foods are peas and papaya. So we give him a pea/papaya mixture and add other things to it. Soon he was eating everything we were adding into the mix! In fact, I just gave him a big bowl of papaya, bell peppers and tomatoes. He immediately ate out all the papaya then started in on the other stuff. If I give him peppers and tomatoes alone for some reason he isn't interested in it:silly:! Who knows! Same thing goes for pellets. We give him a Harrisons/Exact blend. He eats all the red ones out first (from the exact blend), then goes to town on the rest of it! If you look in the bowl at 10am there are no red ones left. If you look in later in the afternoon, practically the whole bowl is empty. All birds seem to be picky/strange eaters. I guess once you find something that works stick with it, until he gets sick of that and then you have to start all over again :silly: :silly: :silly:!!! You will find something... just keep trying! Do try papaya though if you haven't already. I don't know what it is but Makena is OBSESSED with it! Luckily we live in Hawaii or we might have a hard time feeding his habit:laugh:

3. I agree with Tari... The people who run this website should set up polling ability. I don't think it is very hard to do. Then the polls are managed by user name rather than by IP address. And that alleviates the problem of the moderators receiving lots of PM's. Who do we talk to about this?! B)
4. Joe you are awesome... I would buy one but shipping to Hawaii is WAY too much! Plus I don't want Andrew feeling like less of a man
5. Thanks ladies for reminding me of what I have to look forward to! {Feel-bad-00020066}
6. Welcome! Ireland huh? I would love to visit there! It sounds like you really love your bird, you will be a great addition here!
7. LOL Kiwibarb! Makena loves to be in the kitchen too... but only because he thinks he is getting food! Every time I turn on the water or the microwave he thinks it is all about him! Little does he know it is all about ME! He loves to watch me cook and clean... he could sit on my shoulder for hours watching!
8. I agree with Judy. Just relax and enjoy the little guy... You will do great! We were all in your same boat at one point (for me it wasn't that long ago)! In no time you will wonder how you ever lived without him
9. I never named mine either... Lets see... Makena's Pizza in Paradise!

Post edited by: Makena, at: 2007/09/30 21:57
10. You guys are all nuts :silly:!! I love it...
11. Toilet Cleaning Instructions : 1. Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl. 2. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom. 3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids. You may need to stand on the lid. 4. The cat will self agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this. 5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a "power-wash" and rinse". 6. Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door. 7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids. 8. The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he will dry himself off. 9. Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean. Sincerely, The Dog
12. Makena

Uh-oh

Yeah we definitely gave her a talking too... She seemed a little annoyed with us be we didn't care !
13. Yeah, Makena does that all the time! I wouldn't worry about it !
14. Makena

Uh-oh

We give Makena treats every once in a while, but for the most part he isn't a fan of unhealthy stuff. I have offered him a chip before and he usually just leaves it and heads straight for his pellets. He doesn't like seed, loves his pellets (especially the red ones for some reason), loves fruits and veggies! I guess Mak is a health nut! We were over at a friends house the other day, she has a severe macaw and we were SHOCKED by what she was feeding him... There was a bowl of potato chips and sunflower seeds in his cage. She was also feeding him whipped cream and ice cream!!
15. I love all the pizzas! Maybe we should start mass producing/marketing them!
16. Awww.... I love the pictures!!! There is nothing cuter than a grey getting a bath !! Thanks Melissa, Karma for you !!

Post edited by: Makena, at: 2007/09/28 21:04

19. Andrew and I met on Halloween in 2001 while both in college in Monterey, CA. I was with my boyfriend at the time, and was introduced to him through a mutual friend at a party. I wasn't dressed up (costume), but he was dressed as a Air Force pilot. I knew there was something special about him, but I didn't see him again until the next semester... The next semester I was trying to add a biology class, but I was wait listed. After some real perseverance I got in only to find out that Andrew was in the class. We both remembered each other and became instant friends and lab partners. We started hanging out all the time... going out to eat, going to farmers market, walking on the beach, etc. Once the semester ended I realized I didn't want to lose Andrew and broke up with my boyfriend. Within days Andrew and I were together and I haven't looked back! Our five year anniversary was in August and he proposed. We are planning a beach wedding in January! We couldn't be happier!!!!
20. Most skins are actually ok. I probably wouldn't give citrus peels or banana peels, but I would think coconut is fine. Anything with a thin outer skin is going to be fine... I guess they don't have anyone in the wild to peel stuff for them
21. Birds aren't as bad as cats and dogs Judy. The reason for the quarantine is to prevent rabis from coming over. Did you know there are no rabis in Hawaii? Crazy huh?
22. When we were bringing Makena interisland we had to go to a special office at the airport which housed the US Dept of Agriculture. They had to check Makena and put a sticker on his cage, saying he was safe for flight. You may have to do something like that. If we were to bring him here from the mainland we would have to have to have him quarantined, which Loviechick is right, tends to be very expensive. Good luck!
23. Hey Martin... I could spend hours on all your questions, but I will try to make it short and sweet !! #1- I would keep your cage inside, unless there is some kind of screened in porch. You risk other birds trying to get into the cage to get to his food, which is how he can catch diseases. The aviary we got Mak from on Oahu kept all their birds outside, and we could see the sparrows squeezing their way through the bars. Hence how Mak got lice and worms. Not to mention you would probably have swarms of fruit flies and other bugs all over his fruit and veggie bowl. A perch or small cage outside sounds like a great idea, just be careful of direct sunlight. We have Mak right by our sliding glass door which is always open, I think he feels like he is outside ! Oh and a side note... our cage is on casters and moves very easily throughout the house. I have to move it all the time to vacuum :pinch:!! #2- We went to every pet store on Maui (all 3 of them!) and found out very quickly that we had to order a cage online. We didn't have the greatest experience buying our cage as it arrived damaged after we spent an extra $150 to have it shipped here! The company was less than helpful and ended up sending us damaged replacement parts. I posted on it a while back, I think the title was "Bad Cage". We went with powder coated... we thought it was silly to pay 2 to 3 times more for stainless because of the eventual rust issue. Plus I don't think we are going to stay on Maui forever and figure we will buy a new one if we move to the mainland rather than ship it. We are already starting to notice small amounts of rust, but it happens... #3- We have a harness and Mak is finally getting used to it. We take him on frequent walks to the beach, in fact the other day we walked the Wailea beach path with him. He just sits on our shoulder checking out the world. Someday we will allow him to fly in it, but he isn't quite there yet! We use it for our piece of mind. Anything could spook him and off he would go, never to be seen again . #4- The fact that your bird was raised outdoors ups the chance of him having diseases. Luckily if you go to our vet (Roger), he is very familiar with Mak now and knows all about these types of problems! Oh and just on a side note... Roger's office is the only place on the island we have found Harrison's if you choose to feed your bird that. The best place to buy other bird food is Del's in Kahului. It is about half the price of The Pet Shop in the Maui Mall. The Pet Shop does have a great selection of toys and such. The pet store next to Old Navy is total crap in our opinion. Well I guess that wasn't really short and sweet, but hopefully it helped! Good Luck!!
24. Exactly LMG!!! I don't mind being a nut Karma for you!
