    Jump!

LOL, cant wait to see the video of your bird teaching you tricks.
  2. Do you have a link to they toy? Always looking for new and interesting toys. Anyone have any recommendations on forging toys? I have been looking at some on Amazon and reading reviews.
  3. Do you chop up the leafy greens? or let they pull off the pieces as they want?
  4. I put both cages in a corner and the food dish for the veggies is on the side not against the wall. that way when they don't like the food as i'm experimenting it doesn't hit the wall. I also found it keeps then from pooping all around the cage when they are out playing. I put a boot tray with newspaper in the front and the one side, a lot less to clean off the floors that way. They also like to sleep on the perch in the corner at night.
  5. Today I bought a potato, spinach, collaflower and some corn on the cob , to keep trying different veggies. Alex will eat carrots and squash so far. Rocco won't eat either of those. So do I cook these veggies and potato first? The carrots and squash I don't cook. Is it ok to cut the corn into chunks and leave it on the cob?
  6. Good news, clean bill of health for Rocco. I have to try more veggies with him, wont eat the carrots, zucchini or broccoli yet. Good news is he took right to the Harrison's just like Alex did, so i know he is at least getting a good diet now instead of all seeds.
  7. They are doing fine together, Alex is very curious of Rocco. I am not keeping Rocco quarientined. When i come home and open the cages they both come out and go to the top outside perch, Rocco flies off so I will pick him up and put hime on his stand alone perch. Now Alex files off too and likes to sit on my leg. Alex seems to be trusting me more each day. He still will not step-up from his cage or let me tickle his neck. He actually seems a little calmer now with Rocco there. Alex has taken to my son, lets him tickle him and gives him kisses. Who knew, I'm the one that feeds and cleans him LOL. I take it as a good sign that he likes my son as hopefully that will make him more social with me also. I so enjoy coming home each day and seeing what they will do next.
  8. Taking Rocco to the vets today, I want to start out the right way by getting him a complete check-up. Did the same with Alex when I first got him.
  9. Trying to fit but still having fun
  10. I posted on here how Alex was afraid of the spray and I didn't want to break the trust I'm building by spraying him. Thanks to all the great advise about not making the bath a priority. I did take the suggestion and start putting a bowl of water in the bottom of his cage every day. So far he has not touched it. This morning as I was getting ready I heard him whisteling and making a racket, when I peaked around the corner I laughed to myself. There he was at the drinking water bowl frolicking in the water, ducking his head and throwing water everywhere, having a grand time. So I guess thats a good start. I'll keep the dish in his cage also, hoping he tries that as his big butt doesn't fit the water bowl very well.
  11. Here is my newly adopted, CAG, meet Rocco. looks like Alex has a flock now, LOL
  12. I went and visited Rocco today, he is 2 years old and very tame. He stepped right up to my wrist from his cage and let me tickle him behind the neck, when I put him on top his cage he flew right back to my arm, very social. The girl that raised him seems to have done a great job so far. Never even tried to bite me. I know he may change a little when adjusting to his new home and Alex. He only says a few words but Alex talks his head off, should be a good teacher. I pick him up tomorrow, thanks for all the feedback and advice. John, Alex and soon to be Rocco
  13. Hi Micky and Fifi I joined 3 weeks ago and can only say the advice and the things I have learned here have been priceless. Alex is the best thing that ever happened to me. Shhh don't tell my boys that
  14. Thank you for the advice, although I was not even looking for another one after being with Alex even this short time is so enjoyable. When he interacts with me and seeing he is happy when I come home and let him out to play just makes my day. It breaks my heart after all the reading and advice I have received on here to know that Rocco is now for the most part is cage bound and not receiving the attention he deserves and needs. I am going to meet Rocco today and make my decision. John, Alex and maybe Rocco
  15. Here is my dilemma, then again maybe it's a good one to have. A little background: When I was looking for a grey that needed re-homing I ended up getting Alex three weeks ago, I am slowly gaining his trust, he talks to me a little now and for the first time last night when I said 'Alex tickle' he came over to the perch right next to the cage door and put his head down and let me stroke the back of his neck. 1 step at a time. When i was looking for a grey I was talking with someone local who was looking to also re-home a 4 year old, before I could meet him (Rocco) and make a decision a friend of hers decided she wanted him so I got Alex. She called me last night and wanted to know if i was still interested because her friend changed their mind after learning of all the work involved in owning a grey. Due to her changing lifestyle she knows she does not have the time anymore to give Rocco the attention he needs. And i feel sorry for Rocco because she only lets him out once in awhile when she is home. Would it a ok to introduce another grey into my home at this point? I was thinking it might be good for them to learn and interact with each other and have some company when I am not home. Will 2 males that were not raised together be ok? I don't want them to fight or anything. Each will have their own cage. Thoughts? I am looking to those with experience with having more than one grey.
  16. I started using a spray bottle to clean and wipe down the seed catcher just to get him used to the sight of it. He doesn't freak out when he sees it now. Guess that's a good start.
  17. Guess I can officially join this post. Alex is 4 and was re-homed to me just a little over 2 weeks ago. He only drew blood a few times but is slowly learning as I gain his trust. Mostly nips now. I have been putting his treat on my wrist and he comes to the outside perch to get it. He will take his treat and i keep my wrist there as he eats it. He sometimes follows up with a nip when he is done. I do keep my wrist there while he eats his treat. Hoping this method works over time. I also tell him No Bite when he nips.
  18. Thanks, That's the advice I was looking for, I'll put a water bowl in the bottom of his cage for him everyday in case he wants to use it. I read conflicting opinions about him needing a bath. I would rather work on gaining his trust and learning not to bite. Good to know bathing should (spraying) should not be a concern at this time
  19. Thanks for all the advice. My dilemma is I have only had him 2 weeks and he is still bites except when i give him some food. Am i being overly concerned about loosing his trust I am trying to build by spraying him? I'll try the bowl method for a week, then spray him if that doesn't work for his health of being bathed
  20. I hope I eventually get to that point and know it will take time. I'm concerned about what I should do in the meantime. I don't want to loose the trust I an building
  21. Alex and I have been together 2 weeks now. He seems to be adjusting well, 4 years old and was re-homed. My question is about bathing, if i even pick-up the spray bottle and he sees it he freaks out in his cage. I know from reading the forum that bathing is important but will i lose all the progress I have made to date earning his trust by spraying him in his cage? He only bites a little now and will not step-up from his cage yet. He will step-up from the floor when he flies off the cage. I put a perch on the outside of his cage and he readily comes to the perch for a treat so I have been working with him from there so as not to invade his cage territory and to have him below me and not on the top of the cage where he is higher than me. He is also using the outside perch to sit on so he can see me when I am in the other room. Any thought on whether i should bath him yet?
  22. I gave Alex some scrambled eggs last night when I decided to cook myself some for dinner (didn't add anything like salt or pepper until after i had scooped his out). I gave him about a tablespoon and he didn't leave his food bowl until they were gone. Any idea how much i should give him as a serving size?
  23. Thanks for all the advice everyone, I decided to not follow the vets advice to keep him caged but instead to do as so many other have done, especially after reading so much on this forum and educating myself. After all it's only been a week, and he was placed in a new environment twice within 3 weeks, but a permanent home now. I will just keep working and interacting with him and give him plenty of time to settle in and for me to gain his trust. I decided to also mount a perch on the outside of the cage down low and work with having him come to that perch to get his treat so that when he is ready to step-up it will be down low and outside his cage so i am not working with him from a high perch. I take it as a good sign that he is actively playing with his toys and whenever i walk into the room he perks up and whistles at me. He just started talking a little again and for the past 2 nights when I cove his cage he says good night. I spend as much time as i can in the same room with him just talking to him. I do have one question about the amount of food. When I get up in the morning I change his water (and yes several times a day) and give him some veggies which he is starting to eat. I give him fruit during the day from my hand as well as 2 walnuts a day as a special treat. My question is the pellet package and talking with Harrisons they recommend 1 1/2 to 3 tablespoons a day, right now he is eating about 6 tablespoons of pellets a day. I am monitoring how much he eats making sure there are only a few pellets left when I change his pellet food in the morning, always replacing with fresh pellets. Is it ok for him to be eating this much? Thanks again everyone. have a great memorial Day !!!!!!!!!!
  24. Yes he is an Avian Vet. I like him a lot and watched how he handled Alex and was impressed how he interacted with him, that may not mean a lot but I feel it's important that I trust the vet i choose. It will be interesting to see what others say about the tape, the vet did say use regular masking tape, none of the special tape made for painting. He said the reason he wanted to have me use the cage method is because as of now the only time he will step-up is when he flies off his cage. Thanks for the feedback, will be interesting to see what others have experienced and have to say.
