  1. What's new is having to go fetch him everytime he does this LOL! My breeder is also hand feeding a baby cockatoo and that bird is a giant! The baby is huge! When she was hand feeding the cockatoo, Ollie could not resist, and had to see what was going on. My cage is on order and it should be at my door step this Wednesday. I will take pictures of it when it gets here. This reminds me of when I put my dauters crib togeter and all setup waiting for the day that we got to bring her home
  2. I agree that it takes a mature youngster to handle a grey. When I took my two girls up to my breeders house, they kept jerking their hand away every time Ollie tried to "beak" their finger. I kept telling my daugter to stop pulling away or she will teach Ollie to "catch the finger" and it will not be fun. She could not help her self, therefore, She is not allowed to touch Ollie anymore. I do not want my bird to pick up the "catch the finger" habit. My girls are just to jumpy around this kind of bird.
  3. I went to my breeder’s house yesterday and spend two hours with Ollie. My breeder said he will fly any day now and 10 minutes after she said that, Ollie would fly 1 foot from my finger to the arm of the couch. He did this a few times and then started taking longer flights. Before I left my breeders house Ollie was able to fly over 6 feet and land without crashing. It's amazing how fast he was able to learn flight.
  4. When I get my TAG home I will need your advice on how to potty train him. If he never learns that’s ok but ideally I would like for him to at least learn not to go on me when holding him.
  5. Did you buy your cage from qween city cages? If so how were they? I bought mine at mybirdstore.com but Queen city has better prices. At first I was going to buy from Everything birds but their website went down and the email bounced back all my questions. I can't trust them, so I went with mybirdstore.com. Sad thing is when I called the phone number of Everything Birds, the guy said "yeah, yeah we have it" but for all I know he could have been ready to take my money and run.
  6. I read some of his stuff but I'm not sure I buy in to everything. I respect his opinion but the writer is trying to get inside the mind of the bird, putting himself in their shoes, but there is really no way to know exactly how a bird truly feels. I remember seeing one case where a baby seal was rescued, raised in captivity to be released later in the wild. They discovered the seal was not doing as well as they expected. The seal seemed to be trying to cope with the stress of finding food on its own where it had never had to worry about food from its care takers. So it really is hard to know with any kind of certainty the true experience of the bird in my opinion.
  7. Heather, I did not know you had a zoo also? :side:
  8. You can't get a job, you have a zoo to look after. Welcome to the forums.

  10. I have read that greys need lots of toys that they can chew on or they can over preen them selfs. Your case sounds like a real feather plucking problem. My guess is that the sudden change, your fathers death, has put a big change on the birds normal life. You can't scold a bird like you can a dog, it will do no good. I'm not an expert, but my guess is that you need to try and bond with him and things may change over time. Perhaps someone else who hase some experiance turning a feather pluck problem in to a non-plucking bird can offer better help. Sorry to hear about your father. I lost my mother a few years ago and my heart goes out to you.
  11. What about the pellets? Is she eating the pellets? If She is eating pellets, seeds and fruit, then all you are having problems with is the veggy stuff. Perhaps introduce the veggys slower and you might even want to cut the veggys in to small pellet sized pieces and see how that works.
  12. Now that will be nice. Hope you can get it uploaded. If you have any questions, ask, I might be able to help you.

  14. My breeder told me to only give the attention that you can be consistant with providing. In other words, you don't want to play with him for 6 hours a day and then suddly drop down to 2 hours a day. Your bird won't understand the change. This is the one thing that is going to be hard for me when I bring home Ollie. I am going to want to spend a lot of time with him at first but I am going to have to be careful not to smother him with more attention than I can consistantly give him. My breeder talks to me for hours during my visit and I learn so much information each visit.<br><br>Post edited by: TheGreyMiester, at: 2007/04/13 03:11
  15. I always enjoy watching videos like this. Here is one of my favorite videos:
  16. I don't see anything wrong with flipping the cover over the cage to catch a phone call. but it sould be used only when really needed. With my Quaker, I would drape the cage when I absolutly need quiet when taking an important phone call. With all other cases, I would go in my closet, close the door, and use the phone but sometimes you need pen, paper, and a hard surface to write on that you can't find in the average closet.
  17. My breeder told me a little about this; she did say that males that are hand fed and tamed will "forget" how to either breed or raise the baby but the females do not.
  18. My breeder recomended Kay Tee Exact Original formula available at most local pet stores. She said If I can find a Purina Dealer near my home that they have the best pellets. For me, Kay Tee Exact Origianl formula is good enough for me. Availability is important which is why I asked her what the next best thing would be. Since pellets are not the only food in their diet, the Exact brand should be fine.
  19. He's probably babeling, much like a human baby will before it talks.
  20. It will make your bird more secure. My breeder keeps her cage cover always on the top, and simply moves it back and forth like a wedding vail. This also helps direct seeds to the seed catcher. Cages should only be covered for night time.
  21. I'm not sure if this would help or not but you could try two places on the internet: www.birdfinder.com and you can also try Bird Talk's new website: www.birdchannel.com - they have a tone of information and links there. Hope this helps.
  22. You can get one of these also. at this this link: http://www.mybirdstore.com/WHAT_S_NEW_EXCITING_-MISTY_MATE_BIRD_MISTER_10_OUNCE.html<br><br>Post edited by: TheGreyMiester, at: 2007/04/12 02:53
