What size Pack-O-Bird do you own? M or the special "African Grey"
Michellec replied to Michellec's topic in Cages & Homes
Here she is in her new carrier! Thank you Jeff for your generosity! The carrier is great and Nala took to it on the first try. (After the carrier sat on the table near her cage for a few days) Michelle [/url -
Does barometric pressure affect the mood of your Grey?
Michellec replied to Michellec's topic in The GREY Lounge
Thanks Dave and Jeff. That makes sense. I have to say that our lives have improved since Nala joined our family. I look at her and often wonder just how much she is soaking in ( a lot, I suspect) and what is going to come out of her beak when she begins to talk! She goes to school a few days per week and hears me repeat the same phrases in my job as a special ed teacher. She also has shown preference toward some of my students that I can see in her body language and vocializations when those students enter my room for small group or individual instruction. I do have a rule that they can't touch Nala, but they can offer her treats and toys as long as they label the item for Nala first. They all say they are Teaching Nala. She seems to really enjoy the atmosphere and knows what "Nala, you are going to school today" means and acts "antsy" until she is in her travel cage ready to go. (Thanks to Jeff that will become easier with the pack-o-bird) Anyway, got off the topic. Just so thrilled to share my life with a Grey! Michelle -
I've noticed that Nala is a bit agitated when we have a weather system moving in. She's 8 months old. Do you think this happens? Michelle

http://s182.photobucket.com/user/aaronmichellecarr3/media/Nala/e8838937-1b2c-41cd-aa79-c05c591b06d8.jpg.html I hope this picture uploads. I'm new to photobucket. Anyway, Nala will be 8 months old tomorrow. We have an established bedtime routine. I tell her it's time for nite-nite and get her. She starts her special grumbling noise that she always does at our bedtime routine time. My son (in pic....Nalas love) hugs her and then I do the same. Everyone else in the family says goodnight. Then I take her to her sleep cage and sing her special song. We love her! Thanks for looking.

I'm wondering if the bird babysitter DVD was a good idea?

I'm wondering if the bird babysitter DVD was a good idea?

Her sound is like a descending whoop. I think she likes the sound of her voice, especially this new sound. QUOTE=BaileysPapa;296783]Yes, Michelle, Greys have a wide variety of sounds that they will make naturally. They are not the noisiest birds in the forest, but, they do vocalize quite a bit. And they do make up sounds on their own, other than mimicking. Some people may not know this, but, the whistle that we call the "wolf whistle" has been heard in the jungle where nobody could have taught it to the birds. My Bailey does that often, and I cannot whistle, and the breeder said he has done that from a very early age. And when they find a sound that they like, or gets attention or a reaction, they will repeat it over and over. My Bailey also does a high pitched "Whoop!" sound which he seems to enjoy. Which is also a sound he hasn't learned from any of us. I am not familiar with the bird babysitter DVD, so someone else will have to advise you on that. -
As a new grey Parront, this forum is a blessing to our family.

We purchased it to play on the days Nala does not go to work with me or the rare occasion she is at home all day (like when we go to get supplies at the bigger town). We bought it because we can't get a clear radio station to play and our cable automatically turns off after a while. Well, two days ago she started making this high pitched, rather odd whistle/sound. Over, and over and over etc..... Lol Do greys make up odd sounds or do they usually only make sounds they have heard somewhere? I was thinking she will experiment with her voice much like a young child does when learning to talk. Nala is almost eight months so I figured she is experimenting with her voice. Am I wrong? Do you think the bird babysitter DVD may not be a good idea? There are some truly annoying squawks on that DVD. I think it may have a feature where you can select music instead of the actual parrots. We use it because it has a continuous loop feature. Rookie Parronting mistake? Advice please?

Did you add the fleece cover? If so, is it a good thick fleece? We have been leaning toward the one for greys. I'm jot sure how much larger Nala will get. At 8 months she seems to have more growth left?? -
We have been looking at these for several weeks. Taking Nala to and from work in her sleep cage (kings) is bulky and I have to have someone else carry her in it due to the bulk/weight. We need something more geared toward our active lifestyle that Nala is a part of. We love taking her with us! For those of you who have this carrier, do we really need the more expensive special African Grey model or just the size M with the upgrade to stainless mesh? Nala is a CAG and is 8 months. Last weight (as of six days ago) is 361 g. And I'm not sure how much bigger she will get. (?) Thanks for your help. Michelle

Nala is awesome and we are really enjoying her. She goes to work with me about two-three days per week, and is getting plenty of out of cage time. She is handled by four of us in our family and we are, in my opinion, doing a great job with socializing her through going to work with us. She interacts with humans of all ages. Here is something I've noticed in the past few days.... Nala has been crabby. She is getting enough sleep. She is about 7 months. She is funny because she will try to deflect the step up command (when she doesn't want to) by bending her head and asking for scratches on her head instead of stepping up as requested. She will also bite, then immediately bow head for scratches but when you scratch, she bites again! It's not a "problem", but I wonder when does the baby-sweetness start to shift to something akin to toddler willfulness? Nala has always been a bit sassy....just in her personality. I did start training her to step up on a wooden perch for those times when we may have someone staying here with her or for when she is being very stubborn and refusing to go in her cage when we need her to. Anyway......experienced parronts........?

How exciting! Nala is making all kinds of noises and sounds....I can't wait until her first words!

Nala has a sleep cage in our bedroom. I believe it is a Kings cage. Has two perches, food, water, and one toy. I also use this cage to transport her to work 2-3 days a week with me.
