Early Talking Signs

Harvey is now 21 weeks old and VERY vocal! He's fabulous at whistling and lets us know when he's around. I would love him to talk (which I know may never happen), but has anyone noticed any early warning signs that this may happen? I've convinced myself as he is so bright that he probably will talk (I'll still love him if he doesn't!!) but would be grateful if anybody can give me some pointers.

Hi JillyBeanz, Beau's hatch date was Jan 7th so a similar age to Harvey. The reason we chose beau over other CAG's we looked at was because he did seem to show signs of interaction and intelligance (oh dear, apologies for spelling ;-)) so I'm also of the belief that Beau will talk. He is already trying to imitate the pitch of our voices and sometimes I'd swear I catch the odd word but TBH I think that is more my imagination  anyway I guess a good indicator is with voice (pitch) changes because it shows he it trying to mimic. Actually it is more often than not your grey WILL talk especially if you are constantly talking to and around him.

Hi Jooles - Harvey's hatch date was 18 December - so we're definitely very close. Oh my god - it's going to be like having your kid at nursery - "my ..... can do this!!!" We haven't caught any words, but his pitch drops dramatically when he's mumbling - definitely not part of his normal whistling. I've got my fingers crossed tho! After 17 years of "Spiky" my lovely cockatiel not talking and whistling fab tunes, I'll be over the moon if Harvey talks (tho, like I say, I'll still love him to bits)!! Keep me up to date of your progress. Jill x

Sounds promising. Don't worry I promise I wont be like a competative Mother lol. It is a fact though that most greys will talk - obviously there are exceptions but not many and I'm sure ours both will. I had non-talking tiels too but you cannot compare those with AG's.

I hope we can keep it touch on here to our birds' progress - and help each other along the way with any problems we may encounter.

Jillybeanz, Kea was also an amazing whistler when she was young but never really spoke. Then when she hit one her talking took off at warp speed. Now she talks all the time. I really think them just doing all the whistles and mummbling is a real sign.
