MrsB
In another group of mine, someone posted about these foraging foot rolls for sale. The idea is great, you hide food in these rolls that are edible. So, I read about them and figured they were a great idea, but that I would try to make them first before paying for them. I even wrote the company for details. You get Rice Paper, and put it in water until it is totally soft. You lay it out on a flat surface (cutting board)and put dried seeds, nuts and dried fruit in it. Not too full, you want them to have to dig through the layers to the center. The sky is the limit to what you can put in there, but no wet or fresh ingredients. Then you roll them up, end to end, basically like a burrito or a wrap. Then you place it on a baking sheet & into the oven at 200 degrees for about 5 hours. Turn them over from time to time so they dry out on both sides completely. They should be hard and dried all the way through when they are ready to come out. They will be brittle, so handle with care. But, the birds will smell the goodies, and try to break into it, and have fun getting through the layers! The picture is HUGE but they are really about 3.5'' long and 1'' wide.

Post edited by: MrsB, at: 2009/04/17 00:
BaxtersMom
Mrs B, that looks scrumptious....you should put it in our recipe/cookbook post so more people can see it. I love that you put pics in. This is one I'd like to try on my flock{Nature-00020096}.
MrsB
Oh! Thanks Erika, I didn't know where it should go...I'll put it there too...is it a toy? Food? Recipe? Build your own plaything? I can't decide!
judygram
It seems to come under the heading of both food and toy but it does look interesting, I may just have to try this one too, thanks for sharing that with us.

MrsB
OMG..I dunno how I screwed that up. I just noticed I put it in the wrong spot again! I swear I thought I put it under recipes like you said Erika! Should it be deleted so I can do it correctly? DOH
BaxtersMom
Go ahead and put it in the recipes part, too. It's still a new post worth checking into so I will leave it for the moment but please add it in the recipes/cookbook. Judy is right, it does look very interesting. I give it a blue ribbon just by it's looks alone:)
BaxtersMom
Just read the recipe again....they need to bake for 5 hours? Just wanted to check and make sure. It sounds like a long time so thought I would ask but if it's 5 hours, then 5 hours it will be:silly:
MrsB
Yup, b/c it is only 200 degrees, it is like a very slow dry more than a bake. If you feel it is totally dried before then, then you can take them out for sure. They just have to be completely hard and dry!
judygram
Do you have to go to a health food store or speciality store for the rice paper?
MrsB
Just got it in the Asian food section at the grocery store. They are in an 8.5'' round hard plastic package. And they are cheap, even better!
