sue09
Today Ollie came up with a totally new game. I have always had problems with his diet. he was raised on seeds and over the years I have spent an absolute fortune on different things which I might as well just spread on the floor of the cage! Today however was a first. I put his breakfast in his cage.....a little oatmeal with a few bits of fruit and he used his head like a scoop and cleared his dish to the bottom of his cage in two swipes. I took the dish out saying NO! and he said ' ha ha' (my disabled son says this when we are playing). Because he hadn't eaten a scrap of food I put his pellets in the cage. He doesn't like pellets and usually throws them out one by one, but again, two swipes of his head and they were all over the room. When my partner came in, I told him about it and he got a dish of seed (which is mostly all we can get him to eat) and he put it in thinking Ollie would settle down when he was there. You guessed it....a couple of swipes and the seed is everywhere. I am a bit worried as he hasn't eaten anything today. Do any of you have any suggestions please? ranaz
When hes hungry he will eat, just watch what hes eating, and watch his weight. try the things he likes like oranges, apple, a grape, an almond or peanut...offer him in some time and it will be ok. My grey he likes it when I say good bird to him...so every time i put food in his plate and at the minute he picks one piece I would say enthusiastically GOOD BIIIIRD and he is happy and starts to eat... {Nature-00020095}{Nature-00020095}
sue09
Thanks Ranaz, but all the things he threw out were the things he loves, like his grapes and raisins in his oatmeal, (he always eats the fruits but not the oatmeal) and then his seeds, which are his absolute favourites. BaxtersMom
Maybe you could try a foraging toy. The pet stores have several different kinds. You put the food in the container and they have to work to get it out. It's kind of like a game to them and a challenge. Usually once they pull something out or get to it, they will eat it and it becomes a reward to them. My favorite is a ball shaped object with holes in it. It's made of a kind of rubbery stubstance and has holes all over it. You can put foods in it. I usually put veggies, fruits, cereal or whatever I have handy. I have several birds and some really enjoy this and some don't really care but it might be worth a try.
sue09
Thank-you. He has got foraging toys, but this is just today that he is refusing to eat at all. He is just emptying his bowls onto the floor. I will just have to keep a close eye on him and hope he will eat later on. Apart from that he seems OK. He is playing and talking. sue09
Just a quick update. Ollie still doesn't seem to be eating much. I went and got some yoghurt today and crushed some pellets into it. He was fine while I was spoon feeding but seems to have no interest in his food dishes. If things haven't improved by tomorrow I will get him checked over. Lyric
Hi Sue- how's Ollie doing now? I imagine he's actually eating but just not when you are watching him. He thinks throwing the food out of the dishes is great fun, probably to see what reaction he'll get from you when he does it. I think the best thing to do is try to ignore the behavior when he throws the food out. Eventually he'll figure out that it gets him no attention and he'll move on to something else that DOES get attention. Let us know how things are going... sue09
Hi, He is better now. The vet said he had a chill and must have been feeling unwell. I went and bought lots of bits and pieces and sat spoon feeding him. He is now back to eating. Thanks for your concern. I was very worried as for almost two days he hadn't ate anything. sue09
Well, I know he prefers the taste of my flesh to his food....but I would be absolutely lost without him!!
