HeatherStrella
Hello...I used to love this photo..it was one of my first macro flower shots. I just printed it out to frame it and I don't love it quite as much as I thought I would. I used to think the blurry parts were good...now I'm not so sure that's ok...please tell me what you guys think...be honest...tell me you hate it if you do. thanks!! Poppy
Its beautiful . I like them they sell them in all the gardening nurseries here in uk. I think tho you would have to have the right place to put them .Unfortunately they would look totally out of place in my house .
Titch
I like it.. only thing i don't like is the blur at the front as well as the back of the flower.. i'd prefer the shot to be sharp at the front and blurred only at the back, would give impression of depth better that way imo. Colours are nice though, would look really good in my room. (orange walls! lol)
Luvparrots
The color is gorgeous, but at first glance the blur catch my eye and in my opinion detracted from the beauty of the flower.
HeatherStrella
Yeah, the blur in front AND back is what I was thinking the problem is. I love the colors...maybe I need to find another one and do a "do over"...thanks so much for your opinions
Lyric
I love it. I think the colors are what make the photo so great. I can see why the blur might bother some but I don't think it detracts from the beauty, I think the blur is part of the composition and part of the overall artistic quality of the photo. If anyone asks anyway, tell them you did that on purpose!
twogreys
There is nothing wrong with the photograph. You have merely discovered that macrophotography has limitations, and the major one is a distinct lack of depth of field, and that it is measured in millimetres, and the greater the magnification the shallower the depth of field. All this means in practice, is that you need to be very picky as to where you focus. As a matter of interest, when magnification reaches 10x, it ceases to be macrophotography, and becomes photomicrography. I have said in a post before, that a when a photograph looks right to you, the photographer, it is right. If your photography is for yourself, then the only opinion that matters is your own. However, as you gain more experience, you will find that you are your most pitiless critic.
Guest
heatherstrella there is a little bit of blur on the front and a lot in the back and that draws the attention to the heart of the flower. I think it is not only beautiful but also very sophisticatedly brought in picture. A photo to dream away in.... The only thing that can't be seen on screen is the pixels things. If in printed version it looks grainy it takes away from the whole photo. However, if not.... I would be one to hang this on my wall
cf737
I think this is a beautiful, vivid photo. I agree completely with twogreys in that macro photography does have some extreme limitations in focal length. I think you have done a stunning job here. I have been doing macro photography for a few years now. Here are two examples of shots I took that demonstrate the same depth of field but do not focus on the very front of the subject. HeatherStrella
Thank you guys for the comments. I really appreciate your honesty and compliments. cf737, your photos are gorgeous. I especially like the second photo. I see what you mean, yours and mine are very similar as far as the depth of field. At the time, when I was taking this photo, I really didn't know what I was doing.... I had just picked up the Konica Minolta 7D and I was playing around. A few months later, I found out there was a factory defect and I had to send it back to be fixed. It had trouble focusing...I had no idea this was a problem because I was still learning about photography...so really this photo may be a result of a defect in the camera. LOL
cf737
Thank you so much for the compliment! If indeed the photos "flaw" in it's depth of field was due to a technical problem - keep the camera! It's not a flaw at all lol! Cheers
