bandits_mom08
I am looking at purchasing a new cage (the one I have belongs to a friend). What is the best cage material ie. powder coat, stainless steel, ect? I was also given a cage and it needs a little work. I have fixed the hazards but it has rust on it and needs a paint job. Is paint ok to us on the cage? Bandit is always hanging upside down on his cage and I don't want him ingesting anything harm full. If paint isn't a good idea is there any other ideas?? danmcq
Paint is not ok. If you decide to try and use this old cage, you will need to take it to a shop that can first sandblast it and remove everything including the rust down to bare metal. Then it will need to be powder coated. You may want to just search ebay for a new well built cage that is large and priced fairly even offering free shipping. In regards the "best" material a cage can be made of, it's stainless, but also very expensive.
Goralka08
danmcq is right. Paint isn't OK because with the parrot using its beak to move along the bars, it will chip off that toxic paint and could potentially swallow it.
Carolyn
When you consider having the old cage sandblasted, powder coated and the time and cost, I feel that you might be farther ahead to get a new one. Also with the new one you will have peace of mind. Carolyn & Mika

bandits_mom08
Another cage question: Has any one ever heard of the web site "Quality Discount Cages"? the web address is: http://www.qualitydiscountcages.com Just curious if any one knows their reputation. I found a cage there that I really like and it's at a decent price. Any input would be great. Thanks, Amanda
Luvparrots
Pet Solutions has an EzTop Cage on for $299. I love it. It has a front panel that opens completely for easy cleaning. I recommend you check it out. http://www.petsolutions.com/Images.aspx?ItemID=45180320
bandits_mom08
I went and checked that cage out online and I like that one. I didn't get into much detail as I was short on time but if that site is a good one I may just be purchasing that one. Thanks!!
judygram
I know an older cage that needs some work sounds like a good deal but like the others said you can't use any old paint, it must be sandblasted and painted with powder coat and for what that cost you might as well go with a new cage. danmcq
I have the same style cage, but a little wider, deeper and taller, which in reality could house a Macaw. My Grey likes the cage top both open and closed. He seems to enjoy himself on it either way. With it Open he can climb down and bat around some of his toys. :-) However, He does not spend much time there anyway. He is either on our shoulder, on his playstand or running around the couch. :-)
