Guest briansmum Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 yep thats deffinately a grey! and deffinately a big one at that! what a proud mummy you must be. it's so cute how hes looking at his weight. you could have a caption contest and see who can come up with the funniest "what is he thinking" comment.. i think he's thinking he needs to cut down on those sunflower seeds! also, how do you get him to sit so still on there, brian hates being weighed and can't wait to get off them.
splint101 Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 Jeeze Karla you got a heavy one there but he will loose some baby fat as soon as you take him of the baby formula food. Max was about 470g-480g but he is stable now on 450g-460g. I will check him tomorrow morning again after his {Emotions-00020075}
Number6 Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 I finally got Gina on my kitchen scale and she weighed in at ~475g. I can tell she's gained weight since she came to our home, I think I spoil her:) She's a 16 month old CAG.

Post edited by: Number6, at: 2007/06/14 15:54
Caspersmum Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 I think Casper must be a runt! I've just got some electronic scales, and he seems to be consistently 425g - I wouldn't like to see him in a fight with some of your big boys! Julia
judygram Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Like you Caspersmum, my grey usually weighs in around 410-415 grams, so I guess she is petite like yours and she is a Cag.
danmcq Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 From what I have read about CAG's, it seems that the Males are sometimes up to 2 inches larger and therefore also run heavier than the Females. I am not certain that this is the experience of all the users here, but thats the info I get when reading articles written by the "Professionals". Though sometimes these Pro's seem to possibly have never owned a Grey, or perhaps any other Bird, but they have the Degree and statistics they obtained from "Studies". - Dan
dblhelix Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 Kip is a healthy female CAG 13 months old and consistently weighs in at 365 grams. She is a petite little girl! The natural weight range is actually quite broad from bird to bird. In fact, I want to get the aviator harness for her and am having a really tough time deciding between the small and medium. Small would be right if I just go by weight, but perhaps the medium is the better choice since CAGs are kind of thicker bodied/headed birds...
Guest briansmum Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 well brian broke my scales with his refusal to stand still.. so i'm saving up to but the ones on 24parrot.com that have a stand attatched to them!
judygram Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 My Josey will stand on top of the scale without the stand, she was a little skeptical at first but now I have no problem, so don't worry about having to have a stand for them.
HeatherStrella Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Harrison weighs 445 grams. She's always been right around 450 grams. Her weight was the main reason we had her DNA sexed...she's always been on the small size but the breeder was so sure she was male. PPPFFFTTTT!!!!
frankieNYC Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Frankie is generally around 400-410. On the small side for a CAG - he eats his fair share though Stephanie
Guest Lidia Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 I haven't a clue how heavy Joshua is, he's never been on a scale in his life.
judygram Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 Yes that is a big bird, but we have a few that go more than that.
Toni Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 Pet store weighed Alcazar today. They told me he's not eating well so they need to keep an eye on his weight. Right now he's at 391 and he's 3 months old .
lovemyGreys Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Hi Toni, The normal range for weight is between 400 and 650 grams. Alcazar is not to far off that Toni.Boys vary in size as do the females , he may just be a little guy The Grey is a medium size bird. They can range in size from 12-14" from their beak to their tail & vary in weight. Do you know what kind of diet he is on at the pet store ?Did alcazar look well in himself ? When do you get to bring him home ? It will be much easier for you to control his diet & monitor him.

Post edited by: lovemyGreys, at: 2007/08/27 21:26
Toni Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Alcazar is on pellet diet which Im happy for that. He was suppose to come home the 8th of Sept but who knows now since he doesnt want to eat well again. He looked well, He did his normal cuddling.
lovemyGreys Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 hopefully the pet store will monitor his eating Toni & I hope he will still come home on time, keep us updated
Pryde Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Well i think Pryde is the smallest CAG here. She always, no mater when I weigh her, is right around 355g.
lovemyGreys Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 She is a small bird bless her, As long as she eats well & is healthy i would have no worries some birds just weigh less like us
Makena Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 You are right lovemygreys... just like people I don't really like to monitor my weight though... too depressing! When we took Makena into the vet he said that sometimes greys can have a parasite (worms I guess?) that can make them very thin. He said he has seen parents bring their greys in that are skin and bone and never realized that they had a problem. He said it was never known because the grey was eating fine and because of all the feathers it is hard to tell an underweight bird. I guess that is one more reason why it is important to monitor weight! Makena weighs in at around 430g, he will be 4 months on tuesday!
judygram Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 I hear you there, Makena, it is depressing, but for our birds it is so important, for they hide illness until they can no longer, so a scale is a must have. Makena is at a good weight at 430 grams, average I would say, not too light and not too heavy.
Tricky Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 I must admit, until CD mentioned it I didn't know it was so important to monitor a bird's weight. I'm looking for a scale now, but all the ones I've found online are digital and expensive... could anyone point me in the direction of a less expensive, non-digital scale?
lovemyGreys Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 Tricky i am in the UK so wont be of much use ! i know us brits use Ebay alot, have you looked on there ?
birdmom Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 sure just go to Walmart or a housewares type store. In the kitchen small applicances section, you should find a small battery operated digital kitchen scale. I have one it works great! I paid around $20 USD for it.
