MARIR
I think it will make her feel more secure.
TheGreyMiester
It will make your bird more secure. My breeder keeps her cage cover always on the top, and simply moves it back and forth like a wedding vail. This also helps direct seeds to the seed catcher. Cages should only be covered for night time.
MARIR
I've heard some people say they cover the cage when the bird is being noisey, I thought that was just terrible, kind of like locking a child in the bedroom. how sad...They're birds aren't they suppose to be noisey? Guest Monique
I agree that it is a nice security blanket to cover the cage at night. I've heard the same thing - to cover the cage for a few minutes if they are noisey. I don't know if I agree with that or not. I think a quiet "time out" with no attention is better, but others may like the cage idea. It is a pretty non-harsh "punishment", in my opinion, (if only for a few minutes). TheGreyMiester
I don't see anything wrong with flipping the cover over the cage to catch a phone call. but it sould be used only when really needed. With my Quaker, I would drape the cage when I absolutly need quiet when taking an important phone call. With all other cases, I would go in my closet, close the door, and use the phone but sometimes you need pen, paper, and a hard surface to write on that you can't find in the average closet.
Caspersmum
The other big advantage I've found of covering the cage at night is sleep! My parrot always wakes up (loudly) when it gets light, so covering him up means that he'll get his full 10 hours of beauty sleep. This is particularly useful if you live in very northern climes - we only have about 3 hours of full darkness in the summer. Just remember that far side cartoon - no scary pictures on the inside! MARIR
I used two king size black sheets, Sunday night was the first night home and she did wonderfully! She was sleeping, and when I uncovered it this morning there she was perched on her swing...

Tricker66
I recently got my TAG home. i nemad her Kiwi. I cover my cage every night so that any light from oputside can reach her. She seems happy with that but there will still be some light, enough for her to move around if she shoose to. Im new to this thing woth parrot but in my oppinion, NEVER ever use the cage as a punichment as in put him/her in the cgae and cover it becaouse he/hse is noicy. I honsetly think it would be better to put the bird in a room/place where there is dark for a few minutes instead of the cage. Afterall we want them to enjoy and like thier cage to when were not home foe ex. Well as I said Im new to this so I may be wrong but its my oppinion at them monent! Granpooba
Don't cover any of our birds cages at night. The room is very dark and their is a small night light by each cage. I neither agree or disagree with covering of cages. All that I know is that when I put our birds to bed at night , they all sleep very well. And do not wake up or hear from them till about 6:30 or 7:00 AM. The reason that I do not cover cages was explained to me by a very knowledgeable aviary person, years ago. I was told that should the bird be startled at night or have a bad dream, the bird could fall from its perch or flutter about in the cage, possibly hurting itself because it is so dark in a covered cage and their vision may be impaired when first awoken or startled. This is the simple and only reason I do not cover cages. To each their own, I guess. Sincerely, Dave
MARIR
I've got two cats and two dogs that have access to the house, so they're making noise etc...I cover them and so far Gabby's doing well with it...two black sheets, and a big quilt... linus
I cover my birds cages at night. I think it makes them feel more secure and it protects them from drafts while they sleep. I had not covered their cages at first, shadows and lights from cars driving by scared them. It only took one night of panicked parrot to change my mind. tiombe
the first few nights i was covering my CAG, though he hated being caged up and would cluck/squeek for almost an hour, a very sad sounding thing to listen to, so i decided that since he never seems to fly off the top of the cage, why not just leave the lid open, allowing him to sit on top of the cage, which is his favorite thing. when i go to work now, likewise, i allow him to sit up on top of the cage. he goes down when he likes for food. Guest briansmum
i cover brians cage on a night, but i always leave a 10cm gap at one side of the cage and the hallway light on with the door to the living room open a tiny bit, this way he has a small amount of light if he needs it, but the cover is over the side facing the window so that light does not stream in on a morning. he seems to sleep perfectly fine like this. also it keeps him all snug and warm. judygram
Its a personal preference whether to cover or not, I personally cover mine.

emanstl
I guess this is as good as any spot to get my first post in. I cover Nikki's cage with a black sheet everynight. I usually have to change sheets once every 6 months or so because she can get at it from the side and she likes to chew little peep holes, especially in the morning. For some reason she messes with black sheets a lot less then white. So I try to use darker sheets. If I keep her up to late at night she'll always let me know by sayijng "time to goto bed". She only says that phrase after 9:00 p.m. e

loviechick
I don't cover my birds' cages at night simply because they don't get a cover in the wild, so why at home? That and I've heard they can get night frights when they open their eyes at night and can't see anything due to the cover. Mine are all in their own bedroom that is completely dark, and when I wake up to go to work in the morning, around 7:30, they're all still sleeping in, lazy brats LOL
