sibylle
This thread discusses the Content article: how much time? Hi,I am new to this forum, so please be patient with me... anyhow, I would like to know how much time do you guys spend with your grey per day? I am considering getting one, but I work all day and I am not sure that the evenings would be enough time for me to spend with my parrot. Any inputs on this? I also have a dog (shepherd mix), who goes to doggie care during the day. My phantasy is that my dog and my (future) parrot could become friends and entertain each other during the times I am not at home. Is this realistic? I don't want to traumatize my parrot by leaving it alone for too long. thank you for your help! Sibylle
judygram
Well it depends on whether you are talking about time out of the cage or actual time spent one on one with the grey. Josey spends the weekdays in her cage while I am at work, when I get home I let her out and she is out for the remainder of the evening until she goes to bed. I spend some time holding her and talking to her but the bulk of the time she is on a playstand to be near me. Now as far as the bird and dog getting along, you know you cannot leave the grey out of the cage with a dog in the room even when you are home unless you are right there with them. These are a few of my thoughts and some of the others will chime in with some more.
Guest
Judy, could birds be left out of their cages, say in a spare room made fit for this purpose, while people are at work during the day, you think?
sibylle
Hi Judy: Thank you very much for your help reply. I do work all day, so I could spend a little bit of time in the mornings before I leave - this time the bird would be outside the cage for maybe 1 hr, and then I could spend another 3 hrs in the evenings, which would be outside the cage time, holding him and combined with training. This is during the week, and on the weekends I would have more time. Do you think this is enough social time with the bird? As far as the dog is concerned, of course I would be with them when the bird is outside the cage. Thanks again for your help! sibylle
judygram
FairY, if you had a bird room that they couldn't get out of and was birdproofed, that is remove anything they could possibly hurt themselves with then yes and I believe Tracy does have such a setup with her 4 greys. Sibylle, that sounds fine, a little time out in the mornings and then out when you get home, he can amuse himself nearby you on a playstand or something similar with some one on one time mixed in. Now Sibylle, why don't you introduce yourself in the welcome room and tell us a little more about you.
tarnold
Hi sibylle, My kids get about 4 hours a day out during the weekday and as much time as I can give them on the weekends. Would love to give them more but like you I have to work. As far as the dogs go they are only around the birds when I am home and with them. sibylle
Judy, again, thank you very much for answering so promptly. I am very excited about getting a grey, but I want to make sure she/he gets enough attention and love. Do you guys travel with your greys? In the car, that is. How would you rate the maintenance level for your grey - low, medium or high maintenance? Yes, I will introduce myself later in the evening. I am at work and don't have a lot of computer time. But I promise I will do this tonight. Thanks again for your help!!
sibylle
Tarnold, thanks for your reply. How many birds do you have? 4 hrs sounds good, but then again, sounds like you have more than one bird and they possibly hang out together when you are gone? I would have only 1 grey and 1 dog staring at the cage while I am gone. Sibylle
sibylle
Skuffy, so do you take your grey with you when you visit friends? How about weekend trips, vacations?
judygram
Sibylle, I take my grey with me on road trips to visit my son who lives about 4+ hours away and she does fine, she plays and talks on the trip and is content in her travel cage. She spends most of the time in her travel cage at my son's as he has an inside cat that would like nothing better than some bird meat.

lovemyGreys
Sibylle It's a good idea to leave the TV or a radio on for your grey during the day Be warned choose your channels wisely as im sure he will pick things up from listening,Something like a cartoon channel is always a hit
sibylle
Oh.my.God! I love your greys' play room! They've got it made. Well, I could not provide my grey with a playroom, but the TV or radio on is a great idea. I just want to make sure that he does not get frustrated and start plucking his feathers. Thanks for your reply!

tarnold
I have 2 birds a Tiel and my CAG. They are in the same room but across from each other. I have not had my CAG long enough to put them any closer. Since Elvis (tiel) has been anti-social with Hershey so far he has not been very good company!
