Sun Conure and Cockateil

Does anyone have any idea if a Sun Conure and a Cockateil could live in the same cage? We have a cockateil now and have seen a Sun Conure that we are very interested in. The cage we have is 31x21x62. The size of the birds are very close, but didn't know about the personality of the Conure. Thanks for any input.:P

I would not put them together until you know how they will react to each other a sunconure could easily kill you cocateil they have larger beaks and one well placed bite on the back of the neck and you cocateil will be no more. I have two conure and they do get along with My cocateil but they didn't at first it took about a month before they excepted him as a flock member. I'm very lucky because all my birds seem to get along okay none of them fight with each other I just got a IRN and he is still adjusting but the birds don't seem to mind him and that a good sign.

NEVER count on two birds sharing a cage.

First, if you were to get a Sun, it would need to be quarentined away from your tiel so it is going to need a cage for that anyways.

Second, tiels are known carriers for diseases that other parrots can die from, so I would not have them share things for that reason too.

Third, all it takes is one fight for one of them to be dead. I had a sun and it would try to kill the cats if they got too close to me, so imagine what it could to to a much smaller tiel.

Thanks for the info - I had already decided not to get the Sun - he is a beautiful bird and needs a new home but, might just be more that I can handle at this point. BMustee, you worried me when you said that tiels are known carriers for deseases, what do you mean. I have Bingo (cag) in the same room - is that ok? My tiel has been to the vet and checked out fine. Is this something I should worry about?

What he means is because 'tiels are so massively bred and often kept in large numbers in flights, they are known to be usual carriers of certain bird diseases (also it just seems to be one of those things that hapen, kindo f like how certain dog breeds are at risk for certain ailments more than others). Gardia specifically comes to mind right now but there are a few others.

But don't go panicking and quarantining the poor tiel though. If he's been to the vet regularly and has checked out fine, is happy and eating and acting normal, don't worry. If anything the only reason I would be worried about the tiel and CAG in the same room would be the tiel's welfare. Cockatiels are unsually flighty and delicate birds. They have small beaks compared to other birds their size and are usually very docile and easily bullied. Most birds, including budgies and lovebirds can do a number on them if so inclined.

Thanks so much for the reply - I was beginning to panic. Our teil does go for regular check-ups at the vet, in fact she went in May. I am very careful when my birds are out of the cage, they are not allowed to get very close, since we also have a 4 month old Amazon. She is so little in comparison, I know they could really hurt her if given the opportunity. Thanks again!
