Pellet dunking?

Has anyone else had their grey dunk their pellets in their water dish before eating them? Joey seems to dunk all of her pellets before eating them. do I just have a weird bird?

Nope you have a normal grey! Dunking pellets is quite normal for all pellet eating birds but I worry about bacteria forming quickly so I have Roscoe a Lixit glass water bottle just for birds.<br><br>Post edited by: Cagal08, at: 2008/08/03 09:07

Many dunk, perfectly normal. Kip likes to make soup daily. She's a real chef, never know what mix if different things she may choose to dunk/eat and just leave to soak in the water bowl!

Yes i have four that love to make birdy soup I change their water bowls 3/4 times a day,fresh clean water is paramount to them

same here at my house. at first it thought maybe it was a grey thing... this urge for culinary creativeness , but i've noticed it might be because of the pellets. When I first bought my tiel she'd been weaned onto seeds and her water dish (aside for when she pooped in it) was spotless. Now, because she eats tropican pellets (they smell so good lol) it's always soupy.

Josey does not dunk much stuff in her water bowl and certainly not her pellets, sometimes she has some paper she has torn up in her water but that is about it.

hey guys,

regarding pellet dunking, my grey only dunks the empty shells of sunflower seeds in his waterbowl if i forget to feed him! otherwise, if given his normal food on time, the waterbowl's pretty much clean haha.

Starbuck dunks most of her pellets, except the grape-shaped ones. Those she likes dry. (She's eating ZuPreem) We end up changing her water twice a day.

Yes i think this is a grey thing! My CAG indy does it a lot. I think she is tryin to make a soup!

Dayo is not a "Dunker" either. It does seem common among many members Greys though. :-)

I must have the only Grey (TAG) that doesn't dunk or make parrot soup. I keep the pellets on the other side of the cage and he's too "lazy" to take the pellets all the way over to the water bowl.

 

However, my parrotlets make pellet soup each and everyday. :laugh:

Refund doesn't seem to dunk any pellets, Joey takes them all the way from the bottom of the cage up to the water dish to dunk them

Lyric likes to dunk his food, especially bread. Then, he'll put the bread down on the table and drink the water out of it. It's like a little ritual he does.

Hershey is doing it too, think i'm going to try a water bottle because I cant be there all day to change it right away

Good idea tarnoid,introducing a water bottle ensures Hershey has fresh water when your not around

I'm with Cagal08. I don't want bacteria forming in Congo's water so I use a water bottle for birds. This was recomended by the breeder and of course I don't have time for frequent water changes. B)
