Ok I have been reading up to get myself prepared for "parrot" proofing my home by August when I bring my new baby grey home. I am a little confused on the dishwasher though...Can I still use it? Is the soap detergent safe in it? I am so worried about bad fumes killing my bird and honestly can't find an answer to this. I know it is bad for the bird to ingest the detergent but is it dangerous to use the dishwasher with a bird in the home? If so, what can I use in the dishwasher that is safe?

What does a dishwasher have to do with parrots? If the bird hasn't been bathed in more than a week and you put the bird in the dishwasher, make sure you use the rinse cycle.

Post edited by: Dave007, at: 2008/04/18 21:43

Depends on a lot of different factors. People have a way of throwing everthing in it. Things that make a difference: detergent, rince stuff, materials that are porous, and who knows what. I can't see using one of them for such any easy job.

LOL LOL - Dave, you're too funny! LOL LOL I'm still giggling over that one! LOL - I run my dishwasher and I have two cockatiels and now an African Grey, no problem whatsoever. I spray air freshener in the bathroom off my kitchen, and that's not a problem either, as long as you don't spray it directly near them. Have a great weekend! ;){Feel-good-00020069}

Sorry cant help with this one. My dishwasher is called Dave and I have been married to him for 15 years! He doesnt give off to many dangerous fumes lol:laugh: Dont think I would worry to much about this though. ;)

I have cockatiels as well, and they have never had a problem. But I had not realized how many things I use in this house that I should not around birds, until I started reading these boards and what not.

I burn Partylite candles LOTS, I think that is the one thing I will have to give up that I am actually bummed about. Oh and I have plug ins air fresheners too! At least I know now! Thank you everyone for your help!

Well I guess that is one way to bathe your bird, just run them thru the rinse cycle,:woohoo: that Dave is a hoot all right.

I don't think we have anything to worry about when using our dishwashers, frankly I never gave it any thought.

I couldn't live without my dishwasher, unlike Caroline my dishwasher requires electricity.:laugh:

This is funny! But all kidding aside. Dishwashers using dish washing soap is fine. I run mine at night when Talon is upstairs in her sleep cage, so no problems.
