HilaryQ
Hi gang -- I'm in the market for a new cage (getting my baby Atticus in just about a week  :woohoo: ) and I would *love* some advice! Question 1 - Playtop vs. Dometop. I lean towards playtop but I also have a play stand - so do you guys think the dome is better for them because it allows more space when he's in the cage? Question 2 - Corner vs. Rectangular cage. The corner cage has more room but ... I don't know. Rectangular cages are more common so is there a reason for that? The cage size is the most important thing, I know... it'll be either 36-40" in length, and I plan on getting a cage from a reputable company that's sturdy and safe. I just can't seem to make up my mind about the playtop/dome/corner thing. THANKS!!! hilary
lovemyGreys
Hi Hilary, 1= playtop v dome, personally i prefer playtops, gives additional play area but it is personal preference. 2= Corner v rectangle, rectangle cages seem to have a larger width than corner, personally i would but a cage that has a greater width than height. Always go for the biggest cage you can afford for your grey. Here is a link for other members cages & you can see how they are set up http://www.greyforums.net/forums/african-grey/11611-post-pictures-of-your-cage.html#11611
judygram
I agree with Tracy, I prefer playtops and preferably one that has one off to one side like the one I have, it is not as high as if it was on the very top of the cage. About the corner cage, if you have a corner that would be better for a cage then go with it but that is the only place you can put one is in a corner so for me I think a rectangular cage works better, I can put it almost anywhere. And always go with the biggest you can afford except for those giant macaw cages, you don't really need that big for a grey.
HilaryQ
Thanks! I looked at all the pics and it seems there is a range of cages out there - though your set up seems to take the cake!! I'd give my eyeteeth for a bird room... maybe when I'm done with vet school and move back to CA we'll get a bigger place. In the meantime, I'll keep cage searching.... HilaryQ
Judygram, I've seen a few like yours as well -- you like the split top with half a playtop and the other half a dome? It's a nice compromise and then the playtop isn't so high I can't reach it. Hmmmmm:huh:
lovemyGreys
hi Hilary, i had a cage like Judy has they are cool cages & very roomy for a grey, shame you was not in the UK it's sitting in my garage !! i removed my cages before xmas & am fortunate my greys live in their own room , no more cage cleaning
judygram
Yes Hilary, I do like the split top and Josey goes to the top of the toy hook to get as high as she can I would love to have a bird room but I only have 2 parrots so it works better with the cages, but Tracy has 4 greys and a room to themselves works for her. Maybe you don't have to clean cages anymore, Tracy but you still have to clean a whole room, LOL, you just can't get away from the cleaning no matter what you do. Toni
I think the dome type gives less room to hang toys from.
chapala
I started out with a dome top when I first got Kali because that was what I heard recommended most. He loves to go on top of his cage, and guess what? All the poop falls down on the perches and toys. His first cage was 36x24, again because that was what I heard recommended for Greys. He is now in a 48x34 playtop and uses the whole thing! Reta
judygram
In the case of grey cages, bigger is better!!!!
FeatheredFiend
we have a dometop that opens up in the middle - we call it the sunroof. and it's true, you are limited in placing and hanging toys in that setup. everything must hang from the sides of the cage, or be on the bottom of the cage (getting pooped on i might add). goofy's cage is the one that he came home with tho, and it is HUGE, but when it's time for a new one, i am going with playtop. as far as the corner cages, i think they look cool but have heard that they are very difficult to clean. hope this helps, kris
