Alvin needs you,no avian vet

Hello

Alvin is my handfed CAG,he's 6months old now,he wakes me up everyday vocalizingg,he says already few words! Alvin,Hello,Oliver(me)

his diet is mainly pellets with some seeds, fruits and vegetables.

Last week we had a storm and it seems that Alvin was affected by the cold.(he lives with me in my room)But when i am not home room temperature can go to 16-18degrees C. I didn't pay attention specially that he's still young and it's his first winter.

Since saturday i begun noticing that i am not waking up anymore to his sounds,he passes most of his time on his perch sleeping or inflated without any noticable activity,he still make a turn in the cage eats drinks.. but there is something wrong i was confused

Monday to the vett!

____

I live in Lebanon and unfortunately there is no avian vet in my country!I have found the only exotic vet in my country that could help me more than the "basic" vets.it was my only and best choice

____

no one in my country can run test for my parrot, blood or for the poo

So the vet examined Alvin from the outside and make sure to touch him from beneath and check everything..Everything was fine according to him. I told him about his behavior he told me he must be sick, since he cannot know specifically what my parrot has he gave me :

anti-inflammatory: meloxoral 0.1ml/day for 3-4days + an antibiotic: Bactrim 0.2ml/2 times per day. He told me if there is no improvement in the coming 2-3 days, start with the second antibiotic(he gave me a second one) I asked for the name he only told me it is a 3rd generation antibiotic and put the quantity needed in a blood vial.so I didn't have the original package to see.

Anyway since monday i have been treating Alvin with Bactrim and Meloxoral, and i didn't see any improvement nor a noticible going back in health he still eats and drinks but lazy and sleep lots of times during the day.Even he seemed not to like bactrim he vomitted twice when i gave bactrim.

So since yesterday I stopped bactrim and begun the 3rd generation antibiotic, hopefully the coming days will show improvements, otherwise I don't know what to do.. :(

I really need your help and your experience to save Alvin, since he is sick I have noticed that his poop are 3/4 white, diarrhea also..

A picture:

I told the vet about it

As food he is not eating seeds and not as many pellets as before,he is mainly on vegetables and oat, whole grain rice..

I told many time the vet about the diahrea he told me the 3rd generation antibiotic will stop it and i felt it is like the max he knows and the max he can do for my Alvin..

I really need your help to save alvin,I am really worried for him,but i am thankful that he is still eating drinking and not going south

Thank you in advance

This is Alvin the cutest ever:

You can add some natural yogurt to his diet to provide some good flora for his digestion. Keep him warm is the most basic advice, if you have a desk type lamp you can turn to shine on him that will suffice. I just private messaged you a link that may help advise you.

Alvin is still not good.. but better than the above post,he is back in his cage on his perch, eyes closed and looking skinny..not sure if he will survive.. Since he is not eating I am thinking to start forcefeeding him starting tomorrow,he is losing weight i suppose any idea what formula i can use to do so? he is a handfed parrot so he is still used to the spoon i believe i just need to push it a little bit into his mouth and he will do the rest.. But what should I use as formula? mashed vegetables? i need something "strong" :/ will try yogurt maybe?

I wish i can find apple cider vinegar with the 'mother', but i doubt i will find it in my country never heard of it,but will ask

If you have a facebook account - join the group 'Parrot problem solving 101'. Or contact 'Oneta M Carter' or 'Jamie Galindo'. They are both admins of that group and they know how to help. This forum only has a couple who might know what to do at this stage and as you can see there is a huge lag time. You will get a response within a few minutes in that group.

So very sorry to hear that Alvin is not well! This is awful for you and so worrisome. Can you get human baby food in the jar at your shops? If so, you could try gently warming some and seeing if Alvin will eat it either from your fingers or from a spoon. It will be easy for Alvin to swallow. Also you can try mixing some baby food (vegetables or any mixture that Alvin will eat) with some cooked oatmeal and offering with a spoon or pinched between your fingers and held up to his beak. And if you can find Gatorade or Pedialyte, see if Alvin will drink a few drops from an eyedropper, as keeping him hydrated is important. Sick birds often don't want to drink out of a dish when they feel weak. Often their weight loss is due to water loss and dehydration. This also causes weakness. So make sure that his water is available down low and easy for him to reach also, and try to get him to sip the Gatorade and water.

Try doing a web search for any local Falconry clubs or organizations or Falcon souks near you-- Falconers are great resources for finding vets who are good at treating birds, and they also love their birds the way we love ours and should be happy to help you.

Have you tried calling the Animal House Hospital in Beruit? +961-1-890 001 Maybe someone there can direct you to a vet who is familiar with birds. Also http://www.spnl.org/contact-us/ which is a preservation society and they might have vets that they work with. I also saw on a forum a referral for Dr. Gabi Hilan who treats birds, number: 05454007

I wish there was more that we could do for you from here. :( Keep Alvin warm (but not too hot) and hydrated, and definitely find another veterinarian to speak with. Will hold good thoughts in my heart for you both.

Hey guys!

SterlingSL ,thanks a lot will do it..

Inara, thanks a lot for all the advice! will try to get all these first thing in the morning.Yeah i know Gatorade and can get a bottle tomorrow morning. As for hydration i am making sure that he is drinking from a spoon that i direct next to him he doesn't hesitate to drink from it many times completely and consecutively i do it usually as many times as he asks and accepts to drink.. I am mixing the water with a liquid med containing NaCl CaCl MgCl2 and dextrose(it is called : belgasol)

I am currently force feeding him with baked sweet potatoes, oatmeal, and whole grain rice all cooked and fed as a baby formula,I will get a baby formula like you mentioned.

Alvin is still holding strong on its perch! He seems better than in the afternoon, but still weak.. For the moment it is 1:53am here.I am force feeding him every 2h small quantities.

I am keeping him warm also! WOW thanks for all the research you did for me! Unfortunately i know them all and already contacted them there is not avian vet in the country they only have an idea on how to proceed with birds with basic treatments and nothing special.. As for Dr gaby he's the vet i went to,personally i didn't like him too much, everything he was able to do is a quick examination of the body of my parrot and directly prescribed meds that didn't have any effect on my Alvin, for an expensive price! anyway..i have been giving the meds since monday with no positive visual effects.. Greywings,a member here also advice me a link to a site where i can have a chat with an avian vet i think i am going to do it first thing in the morning.

I will keep you guys updated! i am up all night tonight..I am trying everything to rescue him

It sounds as if you are doing everything possible! So glad that you will be able to chat with an online avian vet. And the food you are giving sounds good also. Smetimes the human baby vegetables food in the jar is easy to use. But do not give infant liquid formula (milk type) because those are loaded with iron. Just the soft veggie baby food from the jar.

Am typing this from my phone so please forgive any mistakes or if it is unclear. You are doing a wonderful job, and Alvin is a lucky little one to have someone who loves him so much!

Alvin is still holding and i am still awake, forcing him to eat every two hours,i did also a steam session for him.

I was also able to talk to the admin of a fb group, which is really amazing and friendly i could never thank her enough! she works i believe with an avian vet for 28years now,and she recommended doing the steam session, giving a vitamin A supplement, also to give Zyrtek, and prescribed for me baytril.. and for sure to keep him warm.. so that's all the news i have for the moment he is still perching with his eyes closed but will respond when i touch him or so.. Hopefully he will get better!! Will keep u posted

Hey SterlingSL,

true,I spoke with Oneta.

got some new about alvin:

well suprisingly alvin is doinggg SO MUCH BETTER! with the antibiotic,he is more active preening,he even said alvin twice this afternoon,as since last 36h he left his perch for the first time this afternoon, and tried to taste some food in his bowl! I am still force feeding him every 2 h,and he is still not that active.. But i believe these are good signs!

I am hoping the best.. and poor alvin didn't sleep a second last night as birds do,tonight he is back on sleeping with his head "in his back" he must be feeling better i suppose.. let's hope hoppe!

What wonderful news! I know it is still a time to feel cautious but it does sound as if your sweet little fellow is making a turn for the better. You have been doing an outstanding job of caring for him! It was such a relief to sign in and know that brave little Alvin is holding on like a champion. We will keep sending good thoughts your way. With warmest wishes for another day of healing improvement, your flock friends on the other side of the world.

Evening guys!

WELL i have great news!

Alvin is getting better and better!!

Today he asked to be fed mashed vegetables, but only for the first 2 spoons and then i had to force him a bit. No more vomiting, only once today.. he is getting more active went to his seeds bowl, ate some, some vegetables also by his own.He is also back vocalizing calling his name often, and i can feel he is getting stronger,as he isn't letting me to feed him in the spoon or to give him the med easily. Also bye to the tired eyes look! he is still not very very active, but he is surely MUCHH better! He also is insisting on spending endless time on my shoulder and would scream if i want to put him back in the cage.. Will post some pictures of him

Here is a couple of pictures of Alvin taken few moments ago,I really appreciate that he is still holding on! he is really better. In one week i had to put him into taking 4 different strong antibiotics with different other med to finally find the good antibiotic for him,Alvin got very thin this week i can feel and see his neck bone and the bones next to his crop,i am making sure to provide him extra feedings and some fatty food that i discussed with Oneta(a professional in bird, that i am contacting online, thanks to SterlingNL,thanks!) in order to get him back on normal weight
