Toni
I think I gave Alcazar the scare of his life. I have a Betta fish and I hold up a mirror to him once awhile, he gets all mad and his gills come out and his tail waddles. I been thinking about a friend for Alcazar so I held a mirror up to him. Let's just say he wasnt impressed. He flew backwards so quick and squawed and went to the other end of his cage no where near the mirror or me. I put the mirror away and boy did he come toward me to protect him. I didnt know whether to laugh or what. I felt bad. I guess I wont be doing that to him again and if I decide to get him a friend it might have to be a slow process of introduction.
BMustee
{Feel-good-0002006E} That’s funny...scared of his own reflection!
Guest briansmum
aww bless his tail feathers. thats the first time i've heard of a parrot being scared of his reflection. it's generally thought they have the intelligence to recognise it's themselves theyre looking at. was this the first time he'd ever seen himself in a mirror? Toni
It must be his first. I never showed him to a mirror before. I dont know if I should continue but do it in a different way. I have a wicker full length. I wonder if I should hold him in my arms, walk up to it so he can see the both of us in it. Any suggestions? I just want to make sure I dont get his little ticker going the wrong way. He doesnt even get that scared of the pups bein around.
Cyard
Poor little bird! My guess is the bird in that mirror was giving him the evil eye:blink:. I think that if you want to expose him then yes take him up to the mirror with him on your arm so that he can feel reassured from the direct support of you. Good luck! MakenasDad
We bring Makena up to a mirror every time we take a shower. There's a full length mirror in our bathroom. He hasn't ever thought much of it. I've even put him up close to it before and he didn't really have a reaction at all. Maybe if you bring Alcazar up to it, do it at a distance at first and do it gradually over time as you don't want to frighten him TOO badly!! Haha G'luck and keep us updated! Christina
I thought greys were supposed to love looking in the mirror. Poor little guy, didn't know what was going on. Finnigan sits on a basket on my vanity counter as I put on my make up morning...he LOVES himself, could stay there all day looking in the mirror!
Guest briansmum
bri had a mirror in his cage when he was tiny.. untill he broke the chain. and i have always stopped to look in it with him when we walk past one. i think holding him and walking slowly towards one is a good idea, i think you'll find he will be fine. but their reflection is something they need to get used to, he can't be freaking out everytime he catches a glimps of himself
Tokisdad
Poor baby. I did the same thing to Toki. She always talks to herself in my big bathroom mirror when she is on my shoulder or when I hold her up to it. She tells herself, "itchy bird" as I scratch her. I thought she would like it, so I put a small one in her cage, (Bad Idea), when she saw it she went absolutely ballistic, screaming and striking it with her beak. She must have thought it was an invader. I won't do that again either.

Post edited by: Loofa, at: 2007/11/09 20:
Laurie
Klaus has only seen himself with me in the mirror. So I think he knows it's us.
loviechick
Well if you think about it, if the Grey seEs you holding an object then all the sudden you hold it up and magically an African Grey appears, naturally they would be freaked out! I would do mirrors from a distance and see if he warms up to it!
