Hey everyone, I hope someone can help me. two weeks ago I got an African Grey that is 21 yrs. old. The lady I got him from is not well and not able to spend enough time with him. He is so funny. He whistles and talks his face off. He won't let anyone put their hand in his cage without biting them. I understand he is protecting his home.

My questions are when they start to molt, how many and what size feathers come out? He scratches his head quite a bit and I've noticed baby gray feathers and two larger ones. Does this seem normal? He doesn't seem to be upset over the change in homes.

As far as his diet, she gave him Gourmet Seeds, fruit, fresh Veggies and some Pellets. He doesn't really care for the Pellets. He does like Bran Cereal tho. Does this seem like a nutritious diet to you? I only want the best for the Kita (Kee-tah), and as I said he seem so happy and climbing around his cage from toy to toy yacking the whole time.

If someone would like to give me some advice I would sure appreciate it. Thanks. All comments welcomed.

Welcome Sharon and Kita. Thank you for taking in an older parrot. It does sound like the lady was doing great with Kita. That sounds like a very good base diet. I don't know what is in the Gourmet Seed mix, just be careful of peanuts - they have been know to have a fungus that will make a parrot very ill. I do know a lot of seed mixes do include peanuts either in the shell or shelled. I would add a few nuts - pine nuts, almonds -my mind just went blank. Others will be in with more suggestions.

The amount of feathers sounds great. Sometimes there will be a handful on the bottom of the cage if he is having a heavy molt. We do like pictures.

Thank you so much for your reply Brat Birds. As soon as I figure out how to post pics, I will do that. I also have a video of him just being silly and beating up his bell. He's a trip for sure. Have a great day.

Hi Sharon and Kita, Welcome to the grey forum.

It sounds like you are off to a great start on your new life adventure.

Give her some time to settle in to her new home and try not to rush her when it comes to new things.

thank you kins2321 I've been trying to post a pic of him without any luck. I've read how Melissa said to do it, but I think I'm gonna have to let Kita do it tomorrow... he's smarter than I.
