He eats what I eat

Hopefully I am not the only one out there that does this, and that I am not doing something super duper wrong!

My Grey has always eaten what we have eaten (except Avocado's and chocolate...well maybe an m&m or two!). If we have spaghetti, he gets some, bbq chicken, he loves, and all kinds of other stuff. I feed him plenty of seed along with daily fruit treats, goldfish crackers, or raisins, which is one of his all time fav's. He uses his deluxe seed mix as a snack or appetizer only and he could never survive on just that. Am I wrong for doing this? I don't feed him pellets; I give him milk diluted and juices diluted for the added vitamins. He has a clean bill of health and he doesn't do anything outside of annoy me!

My Josey eats off my plate at dinner and she eats spaghetti, chicken and lots of other foods also but she gets pellets every day and fresh veggies and fruits. I don't feed too many seeds and I don't give milk, even diluted to her, they cannot digest dairy products.

You should start introducing pellets and if he does not start eating them, try soaking some in some apple juice to get him to try them. You should cut the goldfish crackers out completely or at least as only an occasional treat. He should be getting lots of fresh vegetables and some fruits every day.

I'm not an expert, but I would not even let Klaus have an M&M or two. If it's on the "absolutely not" list then it'll never happen. Also, on the milk, I have picked up somewhere (or thought I did) that they are lactose intolerant, so I'd watch that, or at least research it further before letting him have any more. Everything else sounds ok. Again, not saying I know a ton here, but I think variety is key (as it is for everyone) and I also think that eating is a big social time for birds, so it's good for them psychologically to share food with you.

So there's my two cents worth! :)

Yeah, I'm guilty of not following directions very well, but I believe as long as it's not a habit, it can't hurt him too much.

I tried the pellets once before and all he did was pick them up and fling them everywhere. It's like he knew what I was doing!! He used to love the monkey food as well, but someone told me it wasn't good for him after a certain age.

Thanks for the advice guys! It's always welcomed because let's be honest, none of us are perfect!

No we aren't but we do strive to be better and we all can learn from our mistakes, and you will find that we have threads here that deal with foods to offer and foods to avoid so read thru them for lots of ideas. We are all here to learn more about our greys and how to take the best care of our awesome creatures so they can have the maximum amount of quality time on this earth.

My vet told me to give Alcazar a variety but my vet says its good that hes on a pellet diet. He said some seeds here and there isnt bad but not for a basic diet. Hes on Zupreem Tropical blend. It smells good too. I tried Harrisons sample he flung it.Im still going to try Harrisons in a fine course to see what happens.

hi angie, like the others said try introduceing pellets too alongside everything else then you have all the bases covered.

also, laurie is right greys are lactose intollerant. a beakful of milk once in a while won't hurt, but if you are offering it for the calcium content look in your supermarket for rice or oat milk.

these are both lactose and dairy free but still have the calcium. and obviously being made from either rice or oats they offer other nutrients too.

if thats not enough, rice milk has a natural sweetness so it's great for making porridge with, brian just LOVES it. AND it keeps for ages!
