Steve 2 Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Hello all. I'm curious. Does anyone have a tag that hisses occasionally. Toolouse is 1 year and 3 months. He talks a lot! Picks up both what we try to train and what is happen stance. No cats in the house of labs. When he hisses he doesn't seem agitated, he acts the same as when he's repeating words. I'm wondering if it a species call. Anyone seen this in their bird? Steve
danmcq Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Our Grey will sometimes hiss when he is overly excited about wanting a favorite snack or he see's my wife return to the room as he was anxiously anticipating her to come back in to view. I am sure others will have accounts of when their greys hiss as well.
M'sBabies Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 My Husband was putting together Phoenix's lamp (aka THE HUGE MONSTER) and Phoenix went nuts. Hissing and going after my Husband. Every time when we go to turn on his lamp or move it he does the same thing. I was sharing the lamp between his cage and my Sun Conures but since moving it freaked him out so bad we purchased another lamp/bulb. Not too spoiled. lol
Luvparrots Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 No hissing here. My greys are pretty mellow. If they want something they just take it. It the two legged thingy takes it away, they just go back and get it when she is not looking.
Inara Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 My ancient CAG used to hiss and also give a distinctive growl. Inara hasn't hissed but she does emit the same distinctive growl upon occasion if someone or something moves towards her quickly and catches her a bit off guard.
kins2321@yahoo.com Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Hissing or a growl is NOT good! It is a symptom of distrust. It is up to the owner, to prove they have the birds best interest. Nancy
Steve 2 Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 Now that you mention it Toulouse is usually looking at me when he does hiss. Thx danmcq!
Steve 2 Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 Thx luvparrots. LOL. Got to have wings if you're going to be in charge! =)
Steve 2 Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 Thx Nancy. Will try to rethink the incidents.
Steve 2 Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 Thx Inara. No growl yet....but he's still young!
kins2321@yahoo.com Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 When they hiss or growl, let baby know, you " don't appreciate the behavior!" I personally put my baby back in the cage and walked away. It only works if baby loves you, and wants to be with you. Sophie LOVED us within a week of being adopted. She was two. Nancy
danmcq Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 A hiss is not always a warning from a grey. Dayo for example does it because he is anxious, not as a warning. He is excited and wants something. A growl however from any grey is a warning meaning an attack is immenent if you or that toy does not back off.
kins2321@yahoo.com Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Interesting! Any hiss from Sophie, was always a " warning!" We had to figure it out. She would hiss over the most mudane things. Let her know, she was being way too fussy! ( always listen to your bird!) Nancy
