How to gain trust

Hi guys, i am new in this bird hobby world but i love it. I would love to train my bird to do tricks and to trust me. She is 1 yr and half now and we brought her in when she was 4 months old. She really likes my mom because she stays home with her but everytime i try to show love and passion with her its not enough. Pls show me how to gain trust with a bird step by step pls.

Ps. I try to give her sunflower seeds and cashews and many more (treats) but she doesnt take it but just drops it. I dont know what to do because i really need treats for training. Thx everyone

I would strongly recommend the following sites to learn more and STUDY about understanding parrot behaviour from reputable experts in the field. It's also important to take alot more time to get to know your parrot and find out what she herself regards as a high value treat. Learn to see things from her perspective. Have fun but also remember that earning trust takes time and consistency.

I am not a big fan of trick training, so I cant be of any help. However, Welcome, and please post in the Welcome Room so we can learn more about you & your grey. Also, we LOVE pics!

Greys tend to decide on their own who they choose to be their favorite within a family. It sometimes changes over the years, but you just never know and you cant force yourself to be the favorite..:(

I don't believe in treat training either!! I never expected Sophie to ever do a trick! BUT... I always expected her to follow social norms. I always expected her to love and tolerate our family. To tolerate new friends and other social situations.NEVER to chew her feathers. My expectations, have always been met! On the other hand, I give her my expectations, she gives me hers. An eye for an eye!We have worked out all of our situations. Now I have the greatest grey anyone could ever want. Nancy

  • 2 weeks later...

I do not believe in trick training , or treat training either.

I found birdies are not terribly excited at food as if they are stomach on wings.

Attempts by my wife to bribe birdies by holding out treat containers were regularly snubbed by birdies who flew to me despite

clearly the treats were not on me but inside treat containers hold by wife.

BUT, trick training or treat training as a means of interacting with birdie will be completely different. In the sense

you interact with birdie as form of bonding.

Try to find the time to read this "Understanding the mentality of your grey (or any birdie or beastie for that matter)

http://www.greyforums.net/forums/showthread.php?190599-Understanding-the-mentality-of-your-grey

Surely the more you understand them, and take the time to understand them, the better that you can gain the trust of them

Tricks are fine, in my opinion, if your grey enjoys the challenge and interaction. My CAG Gracie is not a "trick" girl. Some parrots are amazing at tricks--but I rarely see greys online doing tricks like some other species. I would suggest just spending lots of time with your grey and talking with it and forging a relationship of mutual trust and respect. Greys will amaze you with their intelligence and ability to relate to you if given the chance. From my experience, if Gracie ever got the sense I was trying to teach her a trick--she would refuse to comply just on principle.
