scrohan
My name is Sue and I am relatively new to the parrot world. My husband surprised me by giving me a quaker as a thank you for all that I do. This was about a year ago. Needless to say, they are like potatoe chips, "you can't have just one". I now have 8 birds, 1 grey, 1 eclectus, 1 sun conure, 1 jenday conure, 2 quakers, 1 parakeet and 1 cockatiel. I am crazy about all of my birds and love them dearly. My grey recently split his keel and he had to have surgery to close the wound. He has done great and is pretty much healed, but I learned never to leave him up high with clipped wings as they are incredibly clumsy. I am also going to leave him full flighted in the future. I was wondering, does anyone know if painting the inside of a house with a latex wall paint would be harmful to birds. I'm talking about the fumes. One other question. For the first time, I have tiny moths flying around, I presume from either the food or bedding. Any tips on how to get rid of them?
judygram
Hello and welcome to the family, Scrohan, glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and your flock. And you do have the MBS bad don't you. I only have 2 birds, a Cag and a sun conure. That is so sad about your grey having surgery for a split keel, but it happens sometimes and I am glad he is healing and getting better. Please read thru our many threads on various topics for lots of useful information, we have many contributing members here that will help you in any way we can. I believe that you should remove your birds from that area, maybe even the whole house until the paint fumes have left for they are very toxic. The moths are coming from foods you have brought into the house, you need some of those traps and you will have to throw out what has them in it and replace those items. A lot of us keep extra foods in the freezer and keep immediate needs in the fridge. Other foods you may have to put in airtight containers to keep them out, but work on ridding your house of them. If you have pictures of your grey you would like to post please do so and we have another room you could put pictures of the others if you would like to post them also. scrohan
Thanks so much for responding. I bought a 25 lb. bag of food and I guess they must have been in it. If I put it in the freezer, will it kill the moths?

fourtrap
Hello Sue welcome to the family glad you found us and we look forward to read more of your posts. To answer your question freeze your food first when you bring it home that way it will kill all bugs/moths, even your bag that you have now freeze and reuse. Have a great day Benny

dblhelix
Welcome! :P I think Judy pretty well summed it up on the inquiries...remove birds and air the place out really well with any painting. Moths are from foods. Discard mothy food and keep stock frozen or in fridge to reduce hatching (works really well). Poor baby on the keel injury. Glad that has healed well. There are some good threads on this forum about wing clipping, advantages/disadvantages etc. We look forward to your participation here!

Post edited by: dblhelix, at: 2007/10/23 04:
