pjbmom
Hi everyone, I have posted about getting another parrot.I have a yellow nape amazon-Fig. I was contemplating on getting either another amazon, grey or electus. I friend of mine suggested a caique or quaker. So I started reading up on them and they both have a personality I think I would enjoy too. My husband thinks that I should not get another bird this small due to Fig being much larger. He is worried that the new smaller bird could fly over to Fig and Fig would hurt/kill it. Of course I would take all measures not to let this happen but he says "accidents " happen and we shouldn't take this chance. So, I ask all of you for your advice as I have been reading alot of post and all of you are so knowledgeable and give good advice I thought I would ask you. (It is a hard decision on which breed to get or if I should adopt again so I am taking my time. I saw a goffin which was a feather plucker that I have inquired about too - thought I could help save this bird.)Thanks.
judygram
Many of the members here including me have more than one bird, I have three, all different species and they co-exist very nicely, they do not like each other but tolerate one another as long as they keep a little distance from each other. You would just have to supervise when they are both out to see that no harm comes to them and allow them the chance to interact with each other without any fighting. Many of the smaller birds do have quite a large personality and it is interesting to see how different species react to one another, sometimes they can get along splendidly with each other but don't count on it as usually tolerating each other is about the best you can hope for. Luvparrots
I have three parrots all different. All flighted. A Timneh, a Congo and a Blue Front Amazon. They tolerate each other but are not great friends. I can let them all out at the same time but they do not eat together or perch together. I never leave them together alone if I am not in eye shot. I also have a canary that is also free flighted but I kept him in my office, separate, because my TAG likes to stalk him.
Parrot Lady
I have 4 and my quaker gets along great with everyone including my amazon but Opey does keep his distance from Rocky , I can put Opey , Brandi and DJ all on the same playstand with no problems but I do not put any one on the java tree with Rocky is on it , I don't trust Rocky around any of the other birds, so I have to supervise him closely
thenabrd
we have 2 birds and i don't let them out at the same time-ever! athena has never been a good flyer, for some reason it terrifies her. this is the biggest reason i have them out 1 at a time. kallie is the better flyer and much, much bigger than athena, so my fear is athena would not be able to get away to safety as well as she could if she was a better flyer. (think hawk vs sparrow when comparing flying ability, that's pretty much what we have) athena might think she's the biggest bird ever created in any universe, but, kallie is very "interested" in athena. i dont know if she thinks athena is another bird, a moving toy or what, but she watches her intently! i have to watch kallie to make sure she doesn't get on athena's cage when she's out because athena would of course "defend" her home, but kallie's beak would still reach athena through the bars!! Greywings
Accidents can happen even with out another bird, we have several birds and some get along and some just don't do well with others. Each bird and each home is unique and it would be hard to predict any interaction between the birds. You are doing the right thing by doing some research before you take that step forward. Goffins are fun birds and loud birds and exquisite little narrow focused engineers when they want to take some thing apart, like their cage for instance. Clever and busy little Too's. You might also consider another African species the Senegals a very big personality in a small bird suit, they remind me of the aliens in the coffee break room in"Men in Black". theparrotforum.com The Senegal Parrot is a Poicephalus parrot which is a resident breeder across a wide range of west Africa. It makes migrations within west Africa, according to the availability of the fruit, seeds and blossoms which make up its diet. Wikipedia
pjbmom
Thank you everyone. Great advice. Taking my time, reading alot as I want to be sure I make the right decision. I pretty much love all the different breeds so it is a hard decision for me. As I have never had a baby it is exciting to think I could get a baby but then I think of the ones that need adopting. Thanks again
